A hoverfly on a geranium flower. Taken when mooching around in the garden on a sunny evening looking for bird shots with a 'big bertha' telephoto lens!
Hoverfly in garden taken on 17th September 2010.
This is Syrphus ribesii, a very common hoverfly. It is feeding on nectar from the pale purple flower of Michaelmas Daisy. A great flower at providing a late season nectar source for a whole range of invertebrates. It is worth including in any wildlife garden, but just be aware that it can take over a bit. So maybe keep it in a container/pot to be on the safe side.

Very impressed with the sharpness of this 'unknown' lens.
