This photograph is of the Mulberry tree at the base of the Washington Monument. It was taken during the blizzard of 2010. Otherwise known as Snowmageddon.

This photograph is from my series "City of Trees" which documents the trees in and around Washington DC as minimalist and unpopulated landscapes. In this case, if you walked up and stood within the base of the tree you would have a clear view of the white house.

About the Photographs

This photo is from a series I've been referring to as "Passenger". The whole series isn't typical of the work I generally do with intention, but it comes from all of the in between places.

This photograph is from a series I did exploring abandoned and wrecked cars with color infrared film.

Interestingly enough, the color palette from this series renders the pictures in 3-D with the right set of glasses. (The polarized kind I believe)

Scotland - 2005

Negative Size: 6 x 6cm

Film Type: Ilford PanF, FP4 or Fuji NPS 160

Average Exposure: 5 - 10 Minutes

These photos are from a trip to Scotland in 2005. I had gone there for a friends wedding and stayed over for a week to visit the countryside for a week of photography.

In creating these images I used all of my classic film and darkroom technique and applied it to a digital work environment. The original photo was captured on medium format film and digitized via drum scanner. I then limited myself to what I believed would have been possible in a traditional wet (color) darkroom. In essence, I printed a black and white negative on color paper. With the exception of "Tree and Cuillin Hills" which is a color negative, all of these images where created by making broad enlargement burning and dodging masks. Further, each mask was given a specific color balance, Ie. blue or green.

This house has a commercial zoning permit. So the designed it in a way to have a side entrance with a waiting room and bathroom attached to a office. Great for many different types of business. Ambient Light 1 Flash blended keeping the shadow direction best I could.

Mangrove (Island) Study, Estero Bay , 2003

Negative Size: 6x6cm

Film: Fuji NPS

Exposure: 20-30 minutes

About the Photographs

It was balmy...By the end of each of these 20-30 minute exposures my lens and camera were wet with condensation. It didn't seem that humid and my cameras were acclimated to the outside air. I was surprised by how much moisture was carried off of the water.

Tough space, I wanted to capture the rain head also but didn't want to distort the verts. Flash camera right in the washroom and enfused shots 2ev apart in shower.

Before we moved to New Braunfels, we had planned on building a new house in Georgetown. We had land chosen and blueprints designed. I had a kick-ass laundry room designed based on browsing oodles of laundry rooms on Houzz and Pinterest. That deal fell through and we found our current home and I'm so glad it worked out that way. Unfortunately, my laundry room here isn't quite what I really wanted, but compared to our old house where my washer and dryer was in the garage, it's paradise. I do all of our family's laundry about twice a week. I usually fold clothes on our king-size bed in the master and sorting clothes for five people isn't easy to manage in that space. On the weekends, I try to keep the bed clear so Curtis can take a well-deserved afternoon nap. Yesterday, I used our pool table to fold clothes and I think I'm in love. There is plenty of room and I'm not in anyone's way. As I was finishing up, the late afternoon sun was shining through the big windows and I caught sight of the light hitting my mom's jeans. I thought about this Macro Mondays challenge and looked at the cloth a little closer. Jeans are so comfortable, everyone owns a pair, and when they are well worn, jeans can be like an old friend. Denim is such a relaxing and cozy cloth. I love how the pocket is open a little to create a little secret shadowy space in the corner.

I've always really loved the work of Georgia O’Keeffe and Imogen Cunningham and I love Irises, so, here you go. Some macro floral work.

I greatly admire the photographers who can maintain depth of field and sharpness throughout the photo, which is something I find particularly challenging in the great outdoors. In this case though, I wanted to try something a little different. I wanted to create absolutely abstract works with a tiny semblance of clarity of subject so that you know what you are looking at but still able to imagine other-worldy environments.

Indianapolis, IN - 1996

Negative Size: 6 x 6cm

Film Type: Ilford PanF

When I was young we used to drive past this wooded area along E. 82nd Street in Indianapolis. Until I was in my early twenties we had no idea there was anything there but woods. As with many suburban areas, development gradually encroached and soon the trees were cleared to make way for a new retail development. What was left at the top of the hill was this house which we never knew was there. It was subsequently torn down.
