Details hewed in stone above a side-door to the King's College chapel, in Cambridge. This Gothic style chapel adjoining King's College (which itself was established in 1441) was built 1446-1515. The coats of arms of the House of York, and later Tudor, and the flower in the middle is the Tudor rose (combining the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster).

Taken at the Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio. As you can see in this picture, some of the costumes were unbelievable and many of the participants made their own. We were there on a day that started out relatively cool, but it got hot enough that wearing so much would probably get very uncomfortable. I'm guessing that this young woman was part of the queen's court.

The heraldic carvings are the armourial devices of the House of Tudor. The emblems are: the Portcullis and Greyhound, badge of the Beaufort family (Lady Beaufort being the mother of Henry VII); the Tudor Rose, incorporating the red rose of the House of Lancaster and the white rose of the House of York, symbolizing the Tudors' links with both Royal Houses; the Fleur de Lys represents the fact that from Edward III onward, the English Monarch was also Monarch of France (this was dropped by George III). The Coat of Arms is the Royal Arms of England; the Welsh Dragon represents Henry VII's father.

When I was a kid (and even as an adult) I always wanted to live in a castle. I loved old English history and read it religiously all through my youth. My mom always told me I couldn’t live in a castle, so I thought I could own a piece of old English history instead!

This is a silver six pence from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. This is the second lifetime dream that I accomplished this week (owning a piece of medieval history). I won’t go on a new diatribe about history and why it means so much to me (see yesterday’s picture)- but this was a fascinating piece of world history! Date of the coin is 1595.

I dropped in to pay fleeting homage. Queen Elizabeth I is featured. Her reign marked the beginning of England as a significant European power, with explorations that sowed the seeds of colonial power, thriving commerce, and the flowering of art and literature.
