Hot Creek flows down from Mammoth Lakes and becomes geothermally heated as it mixes with another source. These steam effusions are the result of the ambient temp being below freezing in this case(23 F) and the flowing creek water being much warmer or even hot. There are periodic geysers as well that shoot 6ft straight up. People are no longer permitted to swim here as there have been 14 deaths in recent years.

This is a vertical pano with the DFA 90mm 2.8 Macro lens on the 645Z, composite image. The sky incorporates about 12 8-sec exposures, fed into Sequator and Star XTerminator for processing. Foreground uses 6 high ISO frames, median blended for noise reduction with some spot edits here and there.

Hope you like it!

The centre of an French marigold or Tagetes, they are often used as an insect repellent and are great for companion planting in the garden, pretty too!

A warm sight on a night like this, with temperatures going down to 10 degrees.

This guy found a little shade on the fence...

Mt Rundle reflected in a hotspring pool in Vermilion Lakes near Banff Alberta Canada. We had a pretty terrific, though cold, sunrise running through a range of colors over a good 20 minute period. Took this shot a bit later in the sequence, just before the sun peeked over Mt Rundle. Used the Pentax K3ii "pixel shift" feature for added detail and color accuracy, but not sure it made that much difference here. Didn't use much in the way of filters in this one, just stopped down and 1.5s exposure. I may have had the graduated ND filter on to even out the top but my Lee filter is broken so I ended up taking it off as it kept threatening to fall off, so I think this particular shot had used no filters.

Good friend and fellow photography addict Kevin Benedict, captured a different color range a few minutes earlier and about 20 feet away in this photo: flic.kr/p/CwkJf7

By great coincidence, Kevin and I both ended up in Banff over Christmas so we met up early on Boxing Day (Dec 26th for my American friends) for some shooting of the Banff Springs hotel and Vermilion Lakes. Luckily I was well dressed because the temperature was about -15C (before windchill). I was pleasantly surprised that the cameras did not seem to have any troubles.
