A less than welcoming Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and a Great White Egret (Ardea alba) disputing fishing rights with an audience of Canada Geese at Arundel WWT. The egret prevailed.

Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro with PK-12 and 13 Extension tubes for a total of 41.5mm of extension, Single shot at f/22.
I took the previous milkweed shot at f/16 and thought the image quality was rather good; with that in mind, I took this shot at f/22. There was a bit less definition when compared to the same image shot at f/5.6 but not as bad as I thought and I liked the DoF that showed the little stalks coming out of the pod a bit better. BTW: I'm now aware that diffraction is a function of magnification, increasing as magnification increases. That's being said I still prefer this image over the others I shot.
This female red-bellied woodpecker is doing her best to fight off the bitter cold wind and snow today. Red-bellied woodpeckers are southern birds that only recently have expanded their range north into our hostile winter territory thanks to global warming. I'll bet this one is wondering what happened to that global warming trend this week.

Der Stadtturm genannte Rathausturm steht mitten im historischen Kern von Innsbruck, in der Herzog-Friedrich-Straße 21. Der Stadtturm ist ein in der Häuserreihe eingeschlossenes, etwas vorspringendes, gotisches Bauwerk. Durch das historische Rathaus erreicht man die in 31 Meter Höhe gelegene Aussichtsplattform, die gesamte Turmhöhe beträgt 51 Meter. Completed in 1450, the Innsbruck City Tower once served as an observation point for sentries who announced the hours of the day. The guards also maintained civic order at night and monitored the city for fires, hostile intruders and other dangerous situations. Innsbruck assigned the first sentries to the tower in 1529 and discontinued the watch program 438 years later in 1967.

Hostile, cold and silent. Not a man can you meet on a twisted path, no bird can be heard, not even a wind swooshing in the trees. The darkness creeps around, not caring about sunrise, and silence, deep and thick. What a world to explore!

A friend gave me a very small passionflower seedling...not realizing it's capacity to thrive, I planted it in the garden beneath one of the olive trees...by the end of the summer it had spread to three other trees and was strangling them all...thinking I would let it go until fall, I left it to fruit...dug it up the following spring and I am still pulling strangler seedlings out of the garden 10 years later! If only it had been Microsoft stock!
As I dashed out quickly, to grab a shot at sunset, I left my sandals on and got a few small cacti needles in my feet. Then to add insult to injury (literally), when taking this shot through the teddy bear cholla, I accidentally backed up into a cactus to my rear and you can guess where I got poked...ouch. Need to take what one of our neighbors refers to as "living in a hostile environment" more seriously. I've recovered just fine, but will nevermore fail to respect the wild ways of the Sonoran Desert.
As things gradually start to open up I've been out to recce this location which is 30 minutes from home. There are lots of potential shots here both at sunset and sunrise with the wind sculpted trees on this high limestone plateau. There are so many trees that manage to find some sustenance in this hostile karst landscape it amazes me how they survive.
I will await a favourable forecast in the next week or so, before they get any foliage and I will get a sunset shot with Morecambe Bay in the background or a sunrise with the Yorkshire Dales behind. For now here are some of those tortured trees giving a hint of the direction of their pain!

The point of entry for a corral is below a sky dominated by fast moving, hostile looking clouds. I was low in a gully to capture this one, attempting to protect my camera and tripod from the wild prairie winds.

1400 Feet above sea level on the windswept Moors above Todmorden is an escarpment of Gritstone which has been shaped over centuries by the ravages of its hostile Pennine climate.
There are quite a number of fabulously shaped outcrops and the one at the top of this incline is shaped like a giant Anvil. The area gets its name from a prominent boulder called "The Great Bridestone" which is shaped like an upturned bottle with a very narrow base.
The weather was very overcast and this was as good as the light got during the visit. I did like the old wall providing a lead in to this scene with the winter grasses providing plenty of texture!

When the pioneers crossed the Great Plains on the Santa Fe or the Oregon Trail, they often went for a long time without seeing any trees. The prairie was frequently seen as a very foreign and hostile environment to people from the Ohio valley or New England since they were used to forested surroundings. No trees meant no wood for cooking. Dried bison dung was used for cooking fuel instead!
There is a tree that is well-adapted to life on the prairie, however. You can recognize it from afar during the growing season by the shiny leaves that shimmer and shake in the wind. The pioneers were always glad to spot one of these trees in the distance, since it offered the possibility of wood and shade. It also represented the chance of finding water, since this species likes to keep its feet wet, so to speak. That species is the cottonwood tree.
Cottonwoods can be either male or female. It is the fluffy white seeds produced by the females during early summer that give the tree its name. The seeds are very small, 1mm wide by 4 mm long, which is quite remarkable considering that they can become one of the largest trees in North America, up to 100 ft. high with massive trunks over 5 ft. in diameter.
Cottonwoods can live to be over 100 years old. There are cottonwoods on the Great Plains today that were living when the great herds of bison still roamed the prairie
A golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii), photographed at RHS Bridgewater, doing exactly what it does best: looking vaguely inviting while being absolutely, unequivocally hostile. Bristling with a dense mesh of golden spines and sitting smugly in its gravel bed, this is a plant that has fully committed to personal space. Commonly known as “mother-in-law’s cushion”, although “absolutely not a cushion” may be the more accurate description.
