TEWKESBURY –Garry Mills, chairman of the Royal British Legion Gloucester Branch hosted a Joint Angolo German Concert that featured the Trumpeters of the Band of the Life Guards and Marinemusikkorps Ostee-Symphonic Band Wednesday 27, 2014.
The RBL is the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity that provides emotional and financial support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families.
“We actively campaign to improve their lives and safeguard the Military Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces,” said Mills.
More than 200 people turned out to support the RBL, service members as well as civilians. All proceeds that were collected will all go to RBL in support of its cause.
“This was a great event, for a great purpose,” said Joyce McCall, a Tewkesbury resident. “The music was amazing, I loved all the choice pieces played,” she said.
The theme of the concert “The Heroes in Music” which describes how bands provided music throughout the spectrum of military operations to give Soldiers the will to fight and win, but today it is in remembrance of all Soldiers and what they have sacrificed for their country.
At the closing of the night’s event a certificate of appreciation was presented to Maj. Gen. Tim Evans, commander, Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (COMARRC) in appreciation of HQ ARRC and their support.

In the heart of Turkey’s Afyon lies the Phrygian valley, a huge area with a series of mystical caves steeped in ancient history.
Afyon is a central region of Turkey well known for it’s thermal springs, but travel past the spas and you’ll discover the beautiful Phrygian Valley, a huge expanse of hollow caves that have been inhabited for over 7000 years. Still populated to this day, the Phrygian Valley is a wonderful contrast of the ancient with the present, with a thriving farming community working the land around the gorgeous ochre coloured caves and natural rock formations that are scattered across the whole valley. Wandering along the dusty road that goes through the centre of the valley feels like something out of an Indiana Jones film, with huge ancient caves looming on all sides, each containing their own secrets from centuries gone by. Exploring these carved out caverns is utterly fascinating, as each has its own history that tells the story of ancient civilisations that have made the valley their home. One cave holds the carved out graves of a Roman family, with protective engraved stone lions over the door, which have stood the test of time and several different inhabitants. A church from the second century, the era in which the Christians settled in Afyon, has a cathedral-esque interior, stone eaves and worship rooms chiselled deep into the rocks face. Explore the caves some more and you find another tiny space that appears unassuming, but look at the walls through a camera lense and you’ll see the Jesus and the 12 disciples painted onto the stones surface. This phenomenon continues to baffle scientists and is definitely worth the trek up the step hill upon which it sits. The Phrygian Valley also plays host to the fabled King Midas’ castle, a huge rock formation that stands out in the plains that has natural rooms that apparently housed the famous donkey-eared king. If you’ve got strong shoes its well worth climbing up to the top of the rock for unbeatable views of the sweeping valley and its famous‘fairy chimneys’, the colloquial term for rock formations that look uncannily like mushrooms.

Draper & Churchill (2014) think they are mantle variations of the same species and that a study of the gene sequences by Schiaparelli et al (2005) demonstrated this.
Andrej hosted me and Eva in Düsseldorf during our Christmas holidays. We stayed there only for one night but Andrej made a big impression on me and I could not get him out of my mind for the rest of the trip. We stayed in touch by e-mail and I invited him to come over to The Hague from time to time. On the 1st of March he visited us for the second time, as we were becoming close friends. After the Friday night storm there was a beautiful clear sky the next day. We made a wonderful walk along the shore, the beach had almost disappeared because of the high water level. So we mostly walked through the dunes. We were laying down in the sand to enjoy the sun. After walking on the beach we cycled through the dunes of Meijendel.
