So horrified to hear the terrible news coming from Belgium. My thoughts are with the people of Brussels. Very hard to make sense of all this insanity!

I feel so wrong to name it as 'House of leaves'. This is such a heart warming and approachable looking beautiful house by river. It cant be possibly named after a horrifying and nightmare inducing book. suggest me better name please.

I have to say watching this US election unfold I feel like banging my head against a log like this Pileated Woodpecker.

Stavo seduto sul mio ramo ad ascoltare attentamente

le cazzate che andava dicendo la gente

impietrito sul mio ramo rimanevo ad ascoltare la gente

bugie, menzogne, nulla d'intelligente.

Inorridito spiegai le ali e mi alzai in volo

per andare lontano da questo luogo.

schifato per mezzo delle ali mi allontanai dal suolo

per staccarmi maggiormente da questo mondo.

Finalmente riuscii a provare quella sensazione unica

liberandomi dall'umana stupidità.

fui finalmente libero di riscontrare qualche novità

senza imbattermi nella solita mediocrità.

I was sitting on my branch listening carefully

the bullshit people were saying

petrified on my branch I remained listening to people

lies, lies, nothing intelligent.

Horrified, I spread my wings and took off

to go away from this place.

disgusted by the wings, I turned away from the ground

to detach me more from this world.

Finally I managed to feel that unique feeling

freeing me from human stupidity.

I was finally free to find some news

without encountering the usual mediocrity.

I am still overcome with emotion after the events at the US Capitol last Wednesday. The sight of that ugly mob, at Trump’s instigation, defacing the symbol of our democracy is so horrifying and repulsive to me, I am beyond words. As many of you who have followed my page know, I am no fan of Donald Trump, to put it mildly. From the very beginning I knew that his presence in the White House was a travesty and that he was completely unfit to serve. As a culmination to four long years of outrageous acts, the disgusting sight of this deluded mob takes the cake, while thousands continue to die each day from Covid. I could go on and on ...

This photo was taken several years ago while on a visit to the UK - it was a complete throw away, taken through the window of a tour bus while being jostled by fellow passengers, all wanting to get a shot of the these wild ponies. So I took this image to the fantasy land of DDG and touched it up in Topaz Studio.

I came upon this odd construction on a walk not too long ago and was puzzled that it just popped up in what amounts to the middle of nowhere....a location in which no more than 12 families might even see it on the side of a little traveled road. What immediately came to mind were reminiscences of musty and mysterious old stacks in the college library which was the centerpiece of my college campus and my four years of learning. Surely it is no longer such today. The internet has, of course, devastated the traditional libraries of the world, something I find both horrifying and sad for a wide variety of reasons.

Thus, this discovery created a small sense of hope and optimism, and a quick check (ironically via that very same internet) showed that apparently it is more than a passing movement with over 50,000 locations in all 50 US states and over 70 countries worldwide.

Fascinating....as are the details, available at littlefreelibrary.org/faqs/

Blue Blow Fly With Droplet | Calliphora vicina | Monteggio (CH) | May 2021

My latest ANIMAL VIDEO (warning, it's a bit shocking): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T2-Xszz7FI

ABOUT THIS PHOTO:

At first I wanted to title this photo "My Portrait In A Fly's Vomit" because upon closer inspection of the photo I discovered my own reflection on the tiny droplet of (what I assumed to be) puke that hangs out of the fly's mouth - and also because I just thought this was a really cool title (as you might have guessed, I'm probably not the most mature of people ;-)

But then I wanted to know what that droplet really was, because I photographed quite a few flies with this kind of "bubble" in front of their mouths, and since I wasn't sure about the puke, and scientists are adamant that flies don't chew gum, I had to get at the bottom of this (sligthly disgusting but still very intriguing) mystery.

Turns out, researchers only discovered relatively recently why certain flies and other insects like to have a droplet of saliva (because that's what it actually is) hanging out their mouths, and it's for a really interesting and quite practical reason: they use that "spit bubble" to cool themselves.

Here's a summary of an article published in the journal "Scientific Reports" from 2018: "Humans sweat to cool their heated bodies. blow flies have developed a different, unusual method for this purpose, but it is based on the same physical principle: They let a large drop of saliva hang from their mouths, which cools as some of it evaporates. By then reabsorbing the drop, they lower the temperature in the front part of the body.

It was already known that some flies temporarily secrete a drop of saliva, let it hang out of their mouths and then take it up again - repeating the whole process up to six times. But for most, this process was related to the digestive process.

Now temperature measurements by infrared imagers showed that a drop hanging from the "lick trunk" of a fly can cool as much as eight degrees below ambient temperature within 15 seconds. After the droplet is sucked in for the first time, the temperature in the head region drops by about one degree. If the process is repeated, the temperature there drops by as much as three degrees, and in the chest region by another 1.6 degrees.

"The large amount of energy required to evaporate water provides living creatures with highly effective ways to lower their body temperature," write the researchers led by Guilherme Gomes of the University of São Paulo and Denis Vieira de Andrade of São Paulo State University. For example, sweating evaporates water from the moist surface of the body, cooling the skin.

And by panting, dogs and other animals release excess heat by increasing water evaporation on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The chitinous exoskeleton of insects, on the other hand, makes effective sweating difficult. Their tracheal system, which serves respiration, is also less suitable for cooling."

But apparently, letting a large bubble of drool hang out of their mouths, then sucking it in only to let it out again, and then constantly repeating that process, works perfectly well for flies. I tried to apply this cooling technique myself the other day (I work at an airport, the air condition was down, and it was really hot - and I was bored... what can I say). Well, I do not recommend it; it might have worked, but the horrified looks on the passengers' faces (not to mention my superiors') were enough to convince me to end my "fly-cooling-technique" experiment somewhat prematurely and put my mask back on ;-)

ABOUT THE SPECIES (from Wiki slightly abbreviated by me):

Calliphora vicina - the blue bottle fly - is a member of the family Calliphoridae, which includes blow flies and bottle flies. These flies are important in the field of forensic entomology, being used to estimate the time of a person's death when a corpse is found and then examined. It is currently one of the most entomologically important fly species for this purpose because it arrives at and colonizes a body following death in consistent timeframes.

The species predominates in Europe and the New World, but has found its way into other countries via harbors and airports. It was first recorded in South Africa in 1965 when a specimen was collected near Johannesburg, but specimen collections have been few and sporadic since then. It also occurs as an exotic in Australia and New Zealand.

“And I learned what is obvious to a child. That life is simply a collection of little lives, each lived one day at a time. That each day should be spent finding beauty in flowers and poetry and talking to animals. That a day spent with dreaming and sunsets and refreshing breezes cannot be bettered.”

LONG LIVE FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY

... even though we have no reason to 'dance' into May with the horrifying war in Ukraine in its third month, the unbearable heat in Pakistan and India, the catastrophic droughts, floods and the still increasing warming of our wonderful planet.

These bluebells are not to blame for any of this ... but WE are!

I hope you'll have a wonderful weekend and a good start to May anyway!

This Cooper's Hawk male is sitting on a lamp post on the river footbridge to our best park, just moments before he flew out 200 meters to quickly subdue a much bigger bird than him on a low area of the river. People who were admiring him on the bridge were horrified, and I do not blame them.

It is a trick of long zoom lens that makes Fujisan (富士山) or Mt. Fuji look so close to the high-rise buildings in Nishi Shinjuku (西新宿) or western Shinjuku.

This is a westward view from Bunkyo Civic Center.

The twin-tower building just beside Fujisan is Tochou (都庁) or Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office Building. It also has a free observation lounge.

Since Japan is an earthquake prone country, high-rise buildings are built as anti-seismic flexible structures. I hear that these high-rise buildings swing slowly and continue swinging for a while after an earthquake is over. Some say they suffered motion sickness. I also hear that it was horrifying to look up swinging skyscrapers from the ground level at the time of earthquake (^_^;

Tokyo prefecture designates emergency evacuation sites for respective areas of the prefecture in case of severe earthquake. The high-rise building area in Nishi Shinjuku is exceptionally advised to stay in respective buildings.

The area seems to be safe except for the risk of motion sickness.

This is an alternative shot of an image uploaded previously.

We’ve had an odd mix of sunshine, rain and thunderstorms over the last week, caught this partial rainbow from our back garden over the weekend. Ramped up the aperture more than I usually would and was horrified by the amount of dust I had on my sensor, spent ages touching them out!

Took this with a Dutch angle composition in mind, so HSoS!

Left for dead but still alive

Couldn't you find me

A lot of tiers, a lot of cries

Too horrifying

Still I wait till you arrive

Constantly paining

A liberty to live a lie

Have you erased me

Too busy to call me, to hold me

Did you ever really want me

Don't you wanna know

If my heart's been broken

Will I ever know

Of your love unspoken

True that my eyes are blue,

quite the same as you

would you want me to

Be a fool like you

You can't pretend I don't exist

Rewind the memories

You'll never hear of my first kiss

With love sincerely

I learned to fight things on my own

Without protection

I know that there's no coming home

You did erase me

Too busy to call me, to hold me

Did you ever really want me

Don't you wanna know

If my heart's been broken

Will I ever know

Of your love unspoken

True that my eyes are blue,

quite the same as you

would you want me to

Be a fool like you

A fool like you

If I act like you

I'd hide from all my troubles too

If I'd be like you

I would be the same old fool

If my heart's been broken

Will I ever know

Of your love unspoken

True that my eyes are blue,

quite the same as you

would you want me to

Be a fool like you

A fool like you

A fool you knew

I was very wondering if I should shoot or not here.

So finally I decided to upload this one.

For me now, this landscape pierces my heart too much directly.

I walked on the corpse in the fire and in the destroyed city.

But we know

The real battlefield is more sad and horrifying than any virtual space.

And these experiences are enough in the monitor...

Still, there may be something you can find by visiting this place.

I wish it is hope.

(Happy Caturday - theme "Spring Cats")

This is a spider wasp with a Wolf spider. I have not been able to identify what type of spider wasp it is, apparently there are many different types. Here in southern Arizona we have one by the name of Tarantula Wasp, which preys on Tarantulas. They are much larger and have orange wings. The wasp in the photo has stung this spider. When I came across them the wasp was dragging the spider across the ground, heading for her nest. The horrifying part of this story is, the venom of the wasp does not kill the spider, it paralyzes it. After stinging and paralyzing the spider, the wasp drags it to its nest where it lays eggs inside the spider. When the wasp larva hatch inside the spider, they eat it alive. I took this photo at Gilbert Water Ranch in Gilbert Arizona.

Few likely remember the Cinebomb classic from 1957 "From Hell It Came". For those who are familiar will agree this tree closely resembles the horrifying oak that snatched up young island girls while they slept and deposited them into a pool of quicksand. This being a common event on remote islands where tree's are left unsupervised and allowed to freely roam to pursue these unspeakable acts of violence.

A few weeks ago I had a nearly unpleasant encounter with a Coyote very early on the wilder part of the Mud Lake trails, and for the first time became a bit jittery during the dawn walks. That is my excuse for nearly fainting when this character popped down from the tree, oblivious to me, and squawked in horror when it saw me. I am not sure how I recovered to grab an image, but I sat down and calmed down shortly thereafter. And I blame the Coyote.

The name Raccoon comes from the Algonquian word arakun, which means ‘scratches with its hand’. The French name refers to its alleged washing of its food, which may now be better understood solely to be a function its habits of eating things caught from the water.

And I registered and was horrified by the late summer, early fall bokeh.

It's been so long that I've used my Creeps on my stream and I don't know about you guys but I began to miss them!

Might be that my Creeps return in the coming pictures , they might look horrifying deadly and even tho it's true is their tale very sad , filled with grief and pain.

I'm not sure why I have a weak spot for them but I enjoy to draw the drool and saliva what makes each Creep different every time again. :)

Kaiser is a horrifying place for a simple thing like lab work. There is not enough parking for the masses making for a half hour or more the average time to find a spot. People are once again bringing family friends and their spawn overcrowding the entire hospital putting everyone at risk of the virus or any other sickness spreading. . The doctors are on overload and rush patients in and out to meet their quota. Cattle call ain’t my cup of tea. But hey I made it out alive and treated myself to lunch :-)

What horrifying news of an Earthquake of a 7.5 magnitude.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

After taking my pictures of Castle Crags the other day, I noticed the pine needles and cones on the embankment next to where I'd parked. Decided to grab the A9 which already had my 70-200mm and 1.4x teleconverter to shoot a few pictures of the cones from the passenger window. I didn't expect much, after all, a very common site and didn't feel like putting on a macro lens. Was I being lazy, naw, I was just trying to keep my stop short. Ended up back on the road with a 15 photography stop. That's about average for most of my photography stops.

Nothing really great about this shot, but dang, I like it for some reason. Very little processing on this, mostly just pulling some of the color out.

Horrified by the evil that took place in Las Vegas. Such a waste, beautiful people enjoying life, and then a madman. In the middle of the meyhem, love and bravery were fighting back. Thoughts and prayers for those lost and hurting.

The darkest hour is the time when we all get together,

dancing and singing, laughing and crying;

until one man starts dying.

"Disgusting!" says the weak man, "Horrifying!" said the next;

Don't they know that they too are next?

Corpses and blood are everywhere;

just another night, for a bunch of millionaires.

in order to make it, you need to be strong;

for prayers are not allowed here.

praying is for the cattle, the sheep;

and we are above those who are asleep.

NEW: STAY IN TOUCH

Before & After

True story: Don came in with a very, very small bit of bleeding on his finger. I asked what happened and he said "Rena bit me!" (This was the first for Don in over a year of making friends with cats and he was horrified.)

I asked if she had given any warning and this was the answer: "I was patting her and she was wagging her tail so I thought she was enjoying it."

Happy Caturday!

Although I have not yet visited Ukraine and therefore have no photos of this beautiful independent country, I want to acknowledge the tragic situation unfolding there before our horrified, distressed eyes and grieving hearts. Wishing this brave people so very much love and strength to endure and protect their country and their freedom! Celebrating the gold and blue colors of Ukraine with this photo. The gold of their wheat fields and the blue of their sky. Courage and peace to Ukraine!

And of course, I shall always celebrate the Florence I love so much, the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is a special cultural heart of Western Civilization - a civilization where respect for the freedom of the human spirit and the civil rights that protect this freedom are honored. Ukraine is fighting for the dignity and values of Western Civilization, for all of us!

Hello there my friends!!! Happy Friday!!! TGIF!! I hope all is well! I am featuring Jian and Bueno today in this new space. "I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify, I'll go for the gross-out. I'm not proud." ~ Stephen King

He/she is a Red Squirrel. Not much larger than a chipmunk really.

Sometimes it sits out there and kicks up such a ruckus.... sounds like a miniature version of a one man band. Chirping, whirring, squeaking, chucking and buzzing ... more or less all at the same time. It's pretty funny to hear.

It must be something that upsets him.. and sometimes that 'something' is me I suppose. Like this day.

He was sitting there resting, after many attempts at the Squirrel Buster bird feeders. Of course they are almost impossible for him to access..but, I may have seen him manage a bit of a nut out of one. He is very tiny and light and therefore... might not activate the closing aspect of them to the full extent if they are not dialled in for his tiny weight. And, I usually have them open as big as possible for the Flickers and Blue jays...

I watched him for about 20 minutes..he is very persistent... and then, I opened the window and talked to him. Took a few pictures. He glared at me and began his tirade. I went out and put some nuts on the patio wall for him and finally, after scolding me for another 5 or so minutes..he jumped over there to check out the little pile of goodies.

Then, he was totally quiet. Just sat there enjoying every tiny bite and it took foooorrreevver for him to finish one pecan.... yes, I buy the birds and animals special bags of mixed nuts from the Bird Seed store....nothing but the best for my critters. But, don't tell my neighbours.... one has squirrel problems and would be horrified to know I feed them....the other hates any woodpeckers with a passion because they have pecked many holes in her stucco....something about the new type of stucco and possibly the Tyvek insulation under it that attracts them.

This photo was taken in a temple called Mwegyi Hnakaung meaning "two great snakes." It is one of the temples on the Mandalay Hill located just to the north of Shwenandaw Kyaung.

Worship of snake is common in Asian countries. The snake is associated with the dragon, and the dragon symbolises the river and water that are crucial to rice cultivation.

In spite of that knowledge, the two lifelike cobras here looked horrifying.

This is a re-edited version of a previously uploaded photo using Lightroom.

October 💀...Dark and horrifying pictures are taking over and asking for the darkest imagination, our most sinister fantasies and even the madness. If it's about a murder scene , a spooky graveyard or just that most scary look you've got...it doesnt matter. For me it's always Halloween and maybe not cause I love the dark atmosphere but working on my Creeps is a very relaxing thing. It's always asking me some time to work on the details of it but I take my time , put on some music and work on it nice and easy.

Of course are creators on SL working hard this month for the horrifying items and I cant keep up with all the things I've bought! So I all ready know that I'll be creating more darkness even if Halloween has passed. 👻

. . . 75 YEARS AGO: NAGASAKI

www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-53648572

........ ........ The recorded death: 140,000 of Hiroshima...... and 74,000 people died in Nagasaki...............

The nuclear radiation released by the bombs caused thousands more people to die from radiation sickness in the weeks, months and years that followed.

.

On 6 August 1945 at 08:15 Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber plane named Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

.

It was the first time an atomic bomb had ever been used in a war.

The Hiroshima bomb, known as "Little Boy", contained the equivalent of between 12,000 and 15,000 tons of TNT and devastated an area of 13sq km (5sq miles).

.

The recorded death tolls are estimates, but it is thought that about 140,000 of Hiroshima's 350,000 population were killed in the blast, and that at least 74,000 people died in Nagasaki.

The nuclear radiation released by the bombs caused thousands more people to die from radiation sickness in the weeks, months and years that followed.

Those who survived the bombings are known as "hibakusha". Survivors faced a horrifying aftermath in the cities, including psychological trauma.

The bombings brought about an abrupt end to the war in Asia, with Japan surrendering unconditionally to the Allies on 14 August 1945.

But critics have said that Japan was already on the brink of surrender.

.

Japan surrendered unconditionally on 14 August.

On the same day, US President Harry Truman gave an address to a crowd gathered outside the White House in which he said:

"This is the day we have been waiting for since Pearl Harbor. This is the day when fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would."

The following day, Japan's Emperor Hirohito was heard on the radio for the first time ever in a broadcast in which he blamed the use of "a new and most cruel bomb" for Japan's unconditional surrender.

.

He added: "Should we continue to fight, it would not only result in the ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but would lead also to the total extinction of human civilisation."

British Prime Minister Clement Atlee said: "The last of our enemies is laid low."

He added that special thanks went to the US "without whose prodigious efforts the war in the East would still have many years to run".

.

Following the end of the fighting in Europe on 7 May 1945, the Allies told Japan to surrender by 28 July, but the deadline passed without them doing so.

Imagine the following:

By this small island a small sailboat sank in the 17th century. The 5 sailors who were on board were never found, but the rumor says that someone buried them here, in some shallow graves ....

So who lights the candle in the evenings and is this true? Who knows...Spooky :-)

Spring is here and so are the flies. As Tofu has seen almost no flies during winter, he apparently needs some time to get used to them again. He was horrified when one landed on him ....

Hi Everyone!

From my late Summer 2019 Archives:

This is a Milbert's Tortoiseshell, one of my favourite butterflies and one I rarely see anymore.

Why the caption? I attended a major craft sale this past weekend. One of the vendors was selling framed images of beautiful butterflies which all looked rather realistic. Curious, I asked what medium was used to create the butterflies. "They're all real," he replied.

I was so horrified and shocked that I was rendered speechless aside to utter the fact that I believed that to be morally wrong.Oh, the things I thought of to say after the fact .... I was so upset that I left the craft show, brokenhearted. I couldn't believe my eyes that these days, anyone would have the audacity to capture and preserve butterflies for the sake of trying to make a buck.

So, I am posting this for Wannabe Warmer Wednesday, really more for my broken spirits in remembering this event, plus the fact that the high for today is supposed to reach only -18C.

Thank you, my Flickr friends, for reading my rant and viewing this image. I appreciate your feedback, always!

2 Darwin candidates in the act of rock surfing. Darwin candidates " the act of dying while doing something stupid"

Horrified onlookers watch on in amazement

My original plan was to ask my son to pose...but one look at his horrified face told me that wasn't going to happen!

So I decided it was a good opportunity to remind myself how to use the wi-fi capability on my camera and use my phone to set up the shot...then realised I couldn't focus or press the shutter remotely while holding the pumpkin!

At which point my son got interested in the tech and agreed to do it, but aiming for symmetry and precision while your 10 year old is leaping around the garden, waving the phone out of sight and shrieking "Are you done yet?!" didn't make for the easiest of set ups...

Still, we managed something and I might even take my not-so-trusty assistant to his Hallowe'en party later!

An interesting title you may think and you may wonder why I have written artistic impression........

Firstly let me say that the raw data for this 'experiment' is all mine and has been recently acquired. There is nothing new there. What I have then done is considered the processing and have coined a term 'Monochrome channel mapping'. What this means is that this image has been 'created' using ONLY Ha data, there is nothing more in there.

This is an experimentation processing technique that will horrify some and perhaps please others that this can be obtained by only having to acquire Ha data - In fact lets not be so prescriptive, the same could be done with any single filter data if the signal was sufficient.

So I hope that you enjoy this experiment and the debate that it may bring within yourself. I hope that I won't get burnt at the stake for heresy........

I'm previewing two new releases that came out in tandem, CerberusX's new highly detailed Sceleratis Ears and Nefekalum's new matching materials tattoo, Sceleratis Drip Augment in 5 colourways (Zoom in to see both in glorious and horrifying pixel technicolor). I've heard whispers that more tattoos are in the pipeline so keep those clicking fingers peeled on various feeds for announcements. Yes, I'm rather Oni-fangy in this pic. Steven was delicious.
