Thank you to Ivan Deng who graciously offered me a ride to the local park to photograph this owl. We trudged down the extremely icy slope and path (I half shuffled, half walked), and lucky for us, we soon found the owl perched high in a tree. It was a little past 4pm.

In order to have a more neutral angle, we shot from a vantage point farther up the slope. We waited a few minutes before the sun went behind a rolling mass of clouds. I like it when such lighting opportunity presented itself. And, as if on cue, the owl bobbed its head suddenly before turning head on. Then it puffed up its chest and neck feathers and uttered a series of resounding hoots.

* Many owl species nest early in the season. No matter how habituated and tolerant they may be to humans, I believe that disturbance and undue stress have an impact to their reproductive success. A birding friend, Don Delaney, said that these owls would be nesting soon. I do not take pictures of nesting birds, so it's good to leave them alone and not disturb them.

Barred Owl

Fullersburg Woods

Oak Brook, IL

A juvenile Barn Owl out from its nest for one of the first time during a hazy full moon.

This Barred Owl was hooting to it's mate a few trees over. It gave a couple of hoots, and they were gone. This is my first one in two years. Lucky to have seen it at Ridley Creek State Park, Media, PA.

This Great Horned Owl would get into this position every time it gave a hoot. Bend forward, tail up, throat feathers fluffed and hoot.

Thanks so much for the visit!

A Landscape I did in Sansara

Out on the Somerset levels (RSPB Hamwall) and managed to get this image of a Barn Owl doing its evening rounds.

Barred owl high up in a fir tree.

While photographing a red-tailed hawk, out of no where came this Great Horned Owl. Apparently, this owl didn't like the hawk in his territory and chased the hawk away. He was "hooting" at the hawk the whole time. This onery owl let me take a few shots before flying back from where he came.

A surprise visitor to our back yard yesterday, just before sunset. A Barred Owl (Strix varia), I think. S/he calmly surveyed our interest in her/him from 30 feet up in the leafless canopy before taking off in search of dinner.

Great horned Owl staring me down. Central Bucks, PA.

"There's always a hidden owl in knowledge".

There are those who enjoy Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day, and there are those who are just waiting the next day for discounted chocolate. One of these sibling Great Horned owlets is giving hoots to Galentine's Day (honouring the power of friendship) but unsure if the other owlet is all that interested.

A crop of our granddaughter's favourite garden ornament. Whenever she comes over with her parents she quickly heads out to the backyard to visit Hooo-Hooo the owl along with Bunny, the Ducks, Turtle, and Chippy the chipmunk. But "Hooo-Hooo", as she calls him, is her favourite.

Looking for moose and noticed this Great Horned Owl looking back at me in eastern Washington.

This female Great Horned owl was seen hooting to her nearby mate from the top of a cottonwood tree after sunset, in north Walnut Creek, California.

The map location is within 1 mile of the actual location.

That time I accidentally shot an Owl.

Southbound Nº600 led by CN 3203 is just south of the station at Rivière-à-Pierre, but no station stop was made that day. The equipment is dead & drained and headed for VIA's Montreal maintenance center. The consist hit a semi-truck the previous day at 50 mp/h, which has caused the fuel tank to rupture on lead engine 6454.

Barred owl taken this evening in Everglades National Park.

Was in the Everglades last night and what do I see? A Barred owl posing in a tree for me. Of course I had my landscape lens on my regular camera so I grab my Panasonic P&S which will focus in the dark and here is the result. Not bad. Best if viewed large. You will see how amazing this bird will blend into the environment.

Yesterday was my last trip to the Everglades for 2007. It was a decent year for me in the Glades. Got some nice landscapes this year. While not too many birds there in 2007, I did get my first pics of the swallow tailed kites so that was a plus. And I finish off the year there with a barred owl at night which I've never gotten a pic of. This was shot near Pahayokee Overlook. Took some shots of the Glades under the full moon in HDR. I'll process those and will post them later.

Gotta go now and cook some food for Noche Buena. yuca with a lot of mojo!

Great Horned Owl in tree

Every once in a while I luck out and run into an owl. Such a thrill, and a hoot!

Looking for another subject for the camera and heard of a berg in Chance cove. Not too far to go so... called a friend and headed out for a look. Not great weather, fog, light rain, and wind, but still had a hoot.

A very watchful Great Horned Owl and her fledglings in Olathe Kansas.

Short Eared Owl on Skomer.... not the best of shots, the light was harsh and heat haze was causing problems on that day, but it was great to see the owls this visit, they were showing better than previous visits and almost all overnight visitors saw them, though they weren't exactly close!

Some rather poorer images in the comments.

A box of owlies surfaced today, too. I can't wait to reunite them with the others. Of course, this isn't the way I had packed them. I was up to my knees in scrunched up newspaper when I shot this. :)
