I had an incredible encounter with a few non skittish Hooded Mergansers today. The fall leaves lit up the water and they were out displaying (seems early) in their finery. I love the funny sounds they make with their cocking heads. They sure are handsome drakes!
Watching the weather with HenriEtta in her new Hoodie to help protect her surgery wounds. She had 5 lumps removed, 3 of which were mast cell tumours (ear, armpit, rump).

Courting hoodies are kind of like shape shifters. Some times the head looks like a fire hydrant, other times like a barber pole, and of course there is the John Travolta head toss. This is a mild version of the Travolta head toss.

I have been checking my private pond every morning and yesterday around noon Joachim stopped by to tell me the Hooded Mergansers had arrived, 2 males and 3 females so far. The afternoon light is not the best there but great fun to see them back!
Hooded Merganser and wind blown wife. I was surprised to find the hooded mergansers back in the okkanagan after a whole summer's absence. I should imagine this is a stopover on their way to California.
Love these little ducks, they have so much personality. I have tried numerous times to get a good shot of them in flight without much success as they move fast and my settings were off. I felt very fortunate at this time to get both male and female taking off to hunt in another nearby pond! I guess you just have to keep trying.

Scattered showers, and some sunshine. A typical autumn day in Wellington.
Interesting to watch - on wet days people prepare with wet weather gear, hats and umbrellas; on a showery day people often "take the risk" and seek shelter during the showers. The consequence is that one minute the street is busy and the next the people have vanished into shops.
