I took this picture a few weeks back during the raising of the flag by Rochelle firefighters during the town's Lincoln Highway Days celebration. They used a ladder truck and fortunately the wind cooperated, unfurling our nation's flag perfectly.
I remember the events of September 11th vividly, it was shocking how it slowly played out and it became more terrifying with each passing minute...
I certainly don't remember the military this way!
If all military recruits of the female sex, look like this one, there would be no problems of the military branches filling their enlistment quotas. I believe her last name might be Slomba?

Many members of the Military branches showed up at Times Square in New York City as many of the local restaurants in the area were offering free dinners to veterans and as well to Ex- Veterans on Veterans Day.

The town of Iraan was named for Ira and Ann Yates, owners of the ranch upon which the town was built in 1926-1927. It's pronounced "Ira-Ann."
Iraan was an oil boom town, and developed quickly after the discovery of the gigantic Yates Oil Field in 1926, which is now owned by Kinder Morgan.
I think this is the only public car wash in town. I just loved the sign...especially that little white dot at the tip of the spear. It lets you know
where you are in far, desolate West Texas. I have no idea what the name of the car wash is.

Each year, I had this stenciled emblem painted on the curb in front of my house. It's under the mailbox. It needs a good cleaning and retouching.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
Upon the grassy hilltop of Point Loma, over looking the Submarine Base immediately below, row after row of white marble headstones dot the hillside which bears evidence of more than a century and a half of California's military history.
The origins of this hillside cemetery dates back to February 1852 when President Fillmore set aside the southern portion of Point Loma (about 1,400 acres) for military purposes. Subsequently, it was assigned to the U.S. Army and named Fort Rosecrans, after Civil War strategist Major General William Starke Rosecrans, a 1842 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy.
The (then) one acre cemetery was located on the crest of the point and first was used in the 1860s as a burial-ground for the San Diego Barracks –simply known as "Post Cemetery, San Diego Barracks (Point Loma)". When the fort was established a few years later, it became known as Fort Rosecrans Post Cemetery and was so designated until 1934 when it became Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Originally about one acre in size, it now is over forty times that size. Today, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery serves as the final resting place for thousands of veterans of the Armed Forces who answered the call of duty in the nation's service. Included among this number are 22 Medal of Honor recipients. Of the Medal recipients honored at Fort Rosecrans, three served in the Army, 12 in the Navy, and six in the Marine Corps. Medal recipients span military history itself –including the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the U.S. intervention in the Mexican revolution in 1914-1915, the explosion of the USS Bennington in San Diego Harbor in 1905, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Yet this century-old cemetery is also a part of California's early military history. It is the burial place that pays homage to the men who fell at the battle of San Pasqual, whose efforts during the Mexican War helped to bring about the admission of California to the United States.
Inside the stone wall of the original area lies the remains of the soldiers of the First Dragoons who were killed on December 6, 1846, at San Pasqual. A granite boulder from this battlefield bears a bronze plaque with the names of the soldiers who were killed there, while nearby are the graves of the two company commanders, Captain. Benjamin D. Moore and his brother-in-law, 2nd Lieutenant. Thomas C. Hammond, killed while leading the attack. Also located nearby is the grave of Albert B. Smith, who is credited with spiking the Mexican guns at the Old Town Presidio during that war and who nailed the American flag to the flagpole in the Plaza, while under fire by Mexican snipers.

Two of the greatest Cardinals to ever put on a uniform in St. Louis, Missouri...#5 Albert Pujols and #50 Adam Wainwright. I got the chance to snap this photograph on July 4th in Atlanta, Georgia during a game against the Braves and I would love to have been a fly on the wall during this conversation. Unfortunately, Wainwright pitched the day before this game & was unavailable and the Braves started a right-handed pitcher so Pujols was not in the starting lineup. But, just seeing them during batting practice, pre-game activities, and like this during the game (until the rain showed up) was worth the trip during their final season.

Just a little over two weeks prior to this photograph, #46 Paul Goldschmidt accomplished something that had not happened in Major League Baseball in nearly 100 years. In a two-game span versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 14–15, 2022, Goldschmidt achieved nine hits in 12 at bats with four home runs, six runs scored, nine RBI, a double, and no strikeouts. No player had matched or exceeded those totals with zero strikeouts over a two-game span since Ty Cobb on May 5–6, 1925, when the Detroit Tigers visited the St. Louis Browns. And, as of today, Goldschmidt is leading the pack for NL MVP...so here's to seeing him finish the season strong and wrap up his first MVP trophy in an already magnificent career!

Traveling 3 to 4 hours twice within 3 weeks to see a likely 1st ballot Hall of Fame candidate is a small price to pay in my opinion...unfortunately, I only got to see Albert Pujols in batting practice prior to the game against the Braves in Atlanta and the game had a lengthy rain delay causing us to only see 4 innings of baseball, but it was still worth it. As a Cardinals fan, it was hard to see such a great player leave via free agency but I've always remained a fan and was excited to know that Mr. Pujols wanted to come back to St. Louis for his final year of Major League Baseball. Thank you for the memories...

I watched, during pre-game warm-ups, as this person scrambled down to where Adam Wainwright was signing autographs and managed to get his signature on their jersey. It was the day after Wainwright had pitched so there was no chance of him being needed for any game related activity so he took a significant amount of time to sign many items and take photos with fans. Needless to say, this person was ecstatic to get the autograph of their favorite Cardinal on a jersey that matches his exactly. I suspect that this is now in a frame and mounted with pride somewhere is their home...AND, I am thrilled that Waino has decided to return for one final season in 2023! I expect this season to be one that honors him and all he's accomplished as a Cardinal legend...

At this point in time, the future is unclear regarding Adam Wainwright's career as a pitcher in Major League Baseball even though he has reached a position within the Cardinals organization where he can stay as long as he feels that he is being a contributor to the team. While most believe that this year will be his last, he has not confirmed or denied this fact. However, he has began to take some additional time, like seen here, to enjoy the ballparks where they are playing and interact with fans clamoring for a few seconds with a Cardinal legend. On this date in Atlanta, Waino spent about 20 minutes standing at this spot and signing autographs on anything that fans handed him as well as taking photos with fans. He has always been fan friendly and loved by Cardinals Nation but it seems to me that he's taking a bit of extra time to soak it all in...regardless, I enjoyed this time of watching him interact with fans and giving me the chance to snap a few memories. Thank you 50!!

My man...#51 Willie McGee...one of my all-time favorite players (and now a coach) with the St. Louis Cardinals. I remember being a kid and watching the teams from the 80's with all that speed and Willie roaming the outfield...great memories backed up with seeing him pass on his baseball knowledge to today's players!

Two of my favorite things...the red, white, & blue of Old Glory representing America...the land of the free, home of the brave (because of the brave), a Constitutional Republic, independent, patriotic & proud, revolutionary, and strong. From my window of the world I was greeted this evening by this most powerful sunset. It helped me reflect on the beauty of freedom and the proud people of our nation. My heart goes out to all of those who lost friends and family in the tragedies of 9-11. May we never forget the threat to the prinicipals on which this great country was founded; those same principals that our loved ones continue to fight and loose lives for today. In all its glory, God Bless America-Land of the Free and Home of the Brave!
After spending almost all day working on my taxes yesterday (no, about eight hours the previous day wasn't enough!), I finally got out about dinner time to get some air and pick up some groceries (and beer!). After depositing things at home, I went back out for a walk with the wide and brought back a shitload of photographs, most of which were just that — shit. Still, I managed to bring home a few that were decent.
Conthidering that I thpent almoth fithteen minutes thooting this thicket of thistle, I'm glad thomething came of it.

"35 Star American Flag, 1863-1865" by Patti Deters. An old and historic American flag with the stars (each star representing a state) in a circular pattern waves against a clear blue sky. The USA's 35-star flag holds a unique place in American history. This version of the flag came into existence on July 4, 1863, following West Virginia's admission to the Union, and the design was replaced when Nevada joined the Union two years later. This was during the tumultuous years of the American Civil War, representing a nation striving to maintain unity amid conflict. The design of this Old Glory, with 35 stars arranged in a circle within the blue canton, stood as a symbol of resilience and hope. It's not just a piece of fabric, but a testament to a pivotal moment in the nation's journey, reflecting the perseverance and determination of a country amid its darkest hour. Cisco Utah
The Cisco area used to contain many relics of a typical old west railroad town but most of the relics are heavily damaged or gone and the town is littered with abandoned vehicles. Cisco survived long enough into the 20th century to be assigned a ZIP Code, 84515

In this concert for Ars Electronica 2022, Laurie’s piece is complemented by two other compositions, the Second Movement of Philip Glass’ No. 3 Symphony and “Study for String Orchestra” composed in 1943 by Czech composer Pavel Haas.
Moreover, three works will be presented by her as part of the CyberArts Exhibition. These works are:
