The Phase-Locked Oscillator in its "Version 3" form with an CMOS Exclusive-OR mixer.
This worked as intended but proved to be the source of unwanted noise, and was subsequently redesigned with a "Dual JFET" arrangement.
Comparing this with the version 3 reveals that the EX-OR mixer has now gone, and the are now 2 JFETs peforming this function
Connections from the main PCB to the LED interface board to provide ground, +5V and Level_OK signal. A pullup resistor has been added to PIC Microcontroller Pin 21

A design from some time in the early 1980s, I think, or maybe a little earlier.
A "crystal calibrator" is a piece of test gear intended to help one calibrate radio receivers or transmitters, before frequency counters and the like became commonplace.
This was built in my "red phase" - actually I painted the diecast aluminium box with automotive paint - I had a fire engine red Ford Fiesta at some point - and then a coat of varnish. The yellow DYMO labels arguably made for a nice effect!
I suspect the switches cost as much as everything else put together.

This hard working employee of Cardahl's Insulation company in Idaho Falls was finishing the insulation installation in a home I am over seeing the construction of for my widowed Mother In Law. This was one dirty job. I strongly admire the work ethic of this fellow who is willing to do this day after day. I am considering starting a photo essay of this project from its beginning in Late May. Just a few photos at a time. If anyone would be interested in this let me know. I do not want to bore anyone with the photos. This is the project which has consumed most of my spare time this year.

In my garden shed (as if you couldn't work that out for yourself!)
The entire circuit was constructed on one piece of single sided PCB, including the "probe" part which is in effect just a capacitor.
Including the LED to indicate that the unit is powered, the VPA takes 100mA from a 12V DC supply

Well chaos anyway ...
Various things in various stages of construction or development.
The 12V DC fan doesn't really belong to any of those!

In fact, to move this project to the evaluation phase, all that was added aferwards were (a) an LED to indicate that there were supply volts present and (b) some small holes drilled to allow the prototype to be suspended from a suitable support using garden twine (!)
The reason it has a "thrown together" look about it is that it was thrown toghether using entirely junk box parts, including the MMIC which I just happened to have bought from EBay some time ago.
