"Over the Points" was a well produced quarterly review 'of matters concerning the Southern Railway" that was issued to first class season ticket holders during the 1930s. For many years edited by the travel writer E P Leigh - Bennett, the magazine was printed for the SR at the exemplary Curwen Press in Plaistow, London, and the issues show much of the Press's consideration of design, layout, tyefaces and typography. This inlcudes many of the adverts - both 'in-house' and external and the magazine is illustrated with vignettes relevant to the text matter, many by Victor Reinganum.
This is taken from the June 1934 issue that details many of the Southern's extensive and lucrative Cross-Channel ferry services upon which they operated their own fleet of steamers and ferries. This advert, with extensive use of an interesting typeface that Florian H has kindly identified as Koch Antiqua, is for the London based building society "the National". It has a "live where you like!" illustration that shows the 'Home Counties' served by the Southern - Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Kent and that is on close examination wonderfully detailed. You can just make out the initials "C W B" - C W Bacon, one of the finest scraperboard and engraving artists of the day and whose work was extensively commissioned for advertising.

What a dream this must have been in the late 1940s - that decade when with war and austerity basic things such as wanting a good home seemed out of reach for millions. By the turn of the decade the pace of both public and private house building picked up and so home purchase, alongside rising living standrads became more affordable and achieveable - with mortgages available from financial institutions such as the CIS.
Seriously. If I end up not getting the house, I can just live in the stack of forms I've had to sign just to get approved and make a damn offer.

My friend Bruce lives in Shorewood - whick prompted me to take these clips - but I've never been in the lake towns north of Milwaukee proper.
General comment: The homes look at posh as those in Chicago's North Shore suburbs ... but seen to be a lot less expensive.
The home the buyers chose needed a lot of cosmetic work - paint, taking down wallpaper - and kitchen/bath renovations.
But, it was a block from Lake Michigan, on an acre of land, and they got it for $560,000.

This exposed brick wall is one of the best features of the home I'm attempting to purchase. Today was the housing inspection and I'm happy to say that everything went extremely well.
