To explore the limits of resolution with digital negatives:

#2 High resolution: I don´t like working with all these High Resolution Films, but some years ago I tested the Rollei ATP 35mm in combination with a „homebrewed“ developer. At that time I made a lith print about 36x36cm, larger silver gelatin prints would be possible. Last week I tried it with a negative scan (Epson 4870). Cropped negative 3,4x3,25cm (900ppi), enlarged to 30x29cm (600dpi) on Pictorico OHP and printed as a Kallitype onto Hahnemühle Platinum Rag. Looks not bad, but even larger seems to be not possible without a loss of quality, at least not with my possibilities.

Developer Potassium citrate, ATS alkaline fixer, MT3 Vario toner (thiourea).

Ingredients:

Homebrewed Starbucks Verona

Dark Roast Decaf Coffee, Muscle Milk, Cinnamon, and Homemade

Whipped Cream.

I use equal amounts of coffee and Muscle Milk,

Two dollops of whipped cream, and

One big shake of Korintje cinnamon.

Before serving chill in the refrigerator until cold.

It helps to start with a previously refrigerated coffee mug.

When I came to develop the Adox film in Adotech, the developer had oxidised, so I thought I’d try using Caffenol for it. I used the CL-CN recipe diluted 1+1 as I shot it at ISO 12. My previous uses of Caffenol had resulted in overdeveloped negatives. These ones came out quite faint brown, but have scanned well. Maybe next time I’d use full strength and reduce the time to 12 minutes.

This still life would probably be better in colour, given the different bright paint on the objects, but I wanted to use up the film, so that I could get on and develop it. I don’t know if the Adox film has poor image latency like Pan F.

The combination of the Adox and the Micro Nikkor is probably as sharp as 35mm film gets.

One of the few times that I’d wanted to be shooting colour film, so I decided instead to tint the flowers in post, instead, like they used to do before the arrival of colour.

The wind was ferocious that day, and combined with poor focusing by me, the huts aren’t quite sharp enough. The cheap grad filter may have softened the image as well, I need to test it on the digital kit. I haven’t used grads for a long time, I used to just bracket and fuse on my old Canon gear, and with Sony dynamic range there’s no need.

I went to Anglesey Abbey to finish off a test roll in the Autocord, and also to capture the main building with the wildflower meadow in the foreground. The meadow and weather were great for capturing it, but unfortunately it was clad in ugly scaffolding, typical! But still, there are other views and details to capture here, including the mill, and soon wished I’d brought some more rolls of film.

A break in the action...time to show off an old photo. Taken ten years ago, added to Flickr six years back. A couple of people commented back then. Original description below.

As if our schedules aren't already full to overflowing, we like to make our own wine. This photo shows our white wine with our own house label. For reasons of personal taste, we don't make red wine.
