Oh,Attie girl. She's so smart, at 3 months old she has down the stay-stack and is almost stacking herself. She's got will and drive like no other. I can't wait to see what she does when she meets the horses this week. I'm going to take her down there maybe tomorrow or the next day, depending where I'm living.
On that note, I got kicked out. Mom and are are having a huge fight, and it started over stupid reasons. So, I'm going to Atlanta this weekend to assist Deb [Atley's Breeder] in showing and I'm going to go stay with my grandma down there for a while. See if things blow over.
And, about the dog show I missed. A malinois was hit and killed IN THE PARKING LOT. How dumb are people? And two judges collasped. There was some random people showing ridgebacks, one had a tutu/yoga pants on and one had on a SUPER short mini skirt. Two judges collasped, and the judges put up bitches/self-stacking all weekend. Glad I missed.

Buffalo & Pittsburgh's Johnsonburg switcher JB-2 spends some time north of homebase in Mount Jewett, PA for their weekly switch of the Georgia Pacific paperboard mill on a sunny October Friday afternoon.
Continuing with this year's obsession of trains inside buildings, this is a spot I had on my radar for about the last two years. Why it took me so long to tackle it? Well, risk factor for one, timing being another, and just general lack of knowledge about when it got switched. One of local Mount Jewett railfans who has seen this job a multitude of times gave me a starting point long ago, saying it was usually Fridays, but not much more than that. A lot about this switch has changed since I received that advice a couple years back. Prior to 2025, Johnsonburg has typically been a one engine kind of town. The railroad only allotted them one unit to switch all the customers and yards they're responsible for north and south of their base near the Domtar paper mill. You could have a north facing or south facing unit, but not both! Due to only having one engine, any week that the J-burg job was bringing cars with them to Mount Jewett, they would first have to run around in the siding between MJ and CP Boyer north of Georgia Pacific, then proceed not much further south to the switch. Although the switch faces north on the main, it exists as part of a switch back, thus requiring the crew to pull south as the track curves east, creeping along to a second switch to shove southwest into the plant. When switching has concluded, the crew shoves all the way out of the branch back to the main, and therefore is already in position to continue further south to Johnsonburg. The track seen in the foreground is a storage track for excess empty box cars. It gets used sparingly, but doesn't seem to fill up like Google Maps' old satellite imagery might suggest.
So that's the old way of switching. How about the new? My buddy Charlie ended up on this job a few months back, which was at long last my catalyst for being able to document this otherwise never before shot switching op. Charlie's a real good guy, and he helped implement a ton of changes for the better in J-burg. Chiefly one of the big ones was the addition of a second engine to switch with, also allowing the crews to run push-pull as is common on G&W roads, avoiding time consuming run-around maneuvers. While one of the perks of the old way was getting to shoot B&O CPLs which still guarded the main and siding at Mount Jewett and Boyer, 2025 saw the fall and deactivation of CTC for the small stretch of railroad it governed compared to the entire system. The CTC signal system was really only good for staging meets among daily road trains, unit commodity extras like coal, coke, stone, and billets, and the industry locals which might get in their way. However those unit trains have all dried up since 2023 on B&P north of Riker Yard in Punxsutawney, leaving one northbound and one southbound daily freight plus a handful of locals at each yard. Even in 2023 Saint-Albans dispatch was having trouble lining signals some days, requiring trains to stop and ask for authority to pass stop signals. Great for chasing and shooting the signals! Not so great for crews trying to make it back home for dinner. B&P is also entirely a track warrant based railroad, so the signals weren't serving much purpose other than telling you if you're going main, siding, or you've reached the limits of your paper warrant. As such, in May this year work began on taking the signals down and replacing the siding switches with remote radio-controlled switch position indicators, allowing the crews to simply dial up a sequence of numbers to activate a switch when needed. So where am I going with this side bar? Well, this was just a long-winded way to say I didn't really care that they'd no longer need to run around their train, 'cuz without the signals there's nothing else worth shooting at the sidings now. Instead, the fellas can just stop north of the switchback on the main, change ends, and away they go onto the branch towards GP. Initially I thought they might recombine engines before shoving into the plant, but the way I watched it go down was a lot smarter. With the northbound unit still on the rear, they shoved into the building, picking up the outbound loads, then pulled back up to the branch and cut off the engine with the cars, leaving only the inbound empties and the south unit for the spot. Perhaps I'll post the companion shot of that some time. Of note, a second customer on the same branch existed years ago, possibly connected to GP based on the pipes seemingly running downhill between the two. The switch for that plant faces opposite of GP, which would have required a crew to shove south onto the branch from the main to switch it, then compete a run around to go back into the branch for Georgia Pacific, assuming the two would have been switched on the same trip.
Prior to getting the opportunity to shoot here, I did have some reservations as to how I'd execute actually being there. Although my initial plan was to walk the tracks down from the switch near the end of the branch, the far easier option seemed to be just to drive straight in. Aside from a small guard shack near the weigh station, things were fairly relaxed here and I was able to drive right in without question to the employee parking lot, thankfully stationed right next to the tracks. I did have one encounter with a plant worker which still has me scratching my head. On the initial shove in to retrieve the loads, a worker was walking over to the parking lot where I was. He was sort of half-shouting over to me "Nooooo pictures!" He repeated that a couple times, so I put my camera down and capped it for a moment, holding up my scanner to at least listen in on the moves. Both Charlie and I thought he was coming over to either chew me out or ask me to leave, but instead just the opposite happened. The man got in his truck, began to drive away and as he passed me, he gave a smile and a wave. That was the last I saw of him, and no one else batted an eye or asked any questions. Aside from that interaction, no one else cared. I can't tell whether or not he was kidding, but I mean hey, I still got the shots I came for so, all's well that ends well? These quirky little moments are what help make these trips memorable I suppose. If nothing else, I'll at least remember this one for how much backlighting I had to fight with.
The Romford Homebase closed a while back. Concrete bollards attempt to stop people and vehicles entering the site.

A frieze of towering ancient Egyptian deities patrolled the main façade near the entrance (in traditional style, though with one or two holding modern power tools!).
This unique spectacle is sadly no more, as London's redevelopment boom continues to replace all before it with yet more soulless glass and steel boxes.
One of the most surreal sights of London was the Egyptian themed Homebase store in Earl's Court, a striking example of Post-Modernism built in 1988 to the designs of Ian Pollard.

The major feature was a section of the façade designed like that of an ancient Egyptian temple, with a frieze of towering deities carved in relief created by stone-carver Richard Kindersley. The ten figures (some were originally fully coloured but later toned down after the client disapproved) were accurate portrayals of the ancient gods in terms of form and iconography, based on original examples, with an occasional contemporary deviation, such as the electric drill wielded by the god Set!
Sadly this remarkable spectacle is no more, having been demolished in 2014 as London's developers rush to replace whimsical 1980s buildings with more bland luxury apartment blocks, exploiting the fact buildings under 30 years of age are immune from listing. The façade carvings at least should have been saved or incorporated into the new development, but in an act worthy of Daesh were flattened with bulldozers instead.
These are scans from slides taken in 2002, I had hoped to revisit for some digital shots but won't get the chance now. At least the gods will live on in some form in these shots.
