CSX L137 exits the Jacks Mountain Tunnel LEFTBOUND headed back to their homebase of Hagerstown, MD. The train is lead by an AC44 sporting the older (and better) CSX YN2 scheme. After many visits up here conditions were just right to get this train coming out of the tunnel with such a good motor up front.

German Phantom in Action at Wittmund Airbase.
38+10 was painted in a special colour scheme because of the Phantom Pharewell Ceremony when this type of aircraft should leave Air Force service in Germany end of June 2013.

Daily Island Avenue interchange job AVR-6 departs east over the first two timetable miles of the NS Fort Wayne Line on main four, headed back to homebase at Glenwood with cars received from NS C28.
Slithering along the trench wall, the crew is about to pass underneath Ridge Ave, which I delightfully referred to that day as a "tourist spot" for how popular of a shot location this is. Behind the trees off to the right is Allegheny Commons Park West, which boasts some incredible fall foliage every year. However in late November, all the leaves have made their way into the trench, turning the rails and ballast below a bright yellow. AVR and NS make this interchange seven days a week, going about it in different ways as they see fit. If AVR's inbound train is small enough they might drag it into Island Ave with them, but if they're on the larger side they'll drop their cars on the Pittsburgh Line at West Pitt, the control point where the Fort Wayne Line and Pitt Line meet. They'll cut away and head light power the rest of the mile and a half or so to Island Ave, grabbing their outbound train from C28 who will perform the same move from the opposite direction. Once AVR-6 is back on the Pitt Line, they make another short jaunt across the Allegheny River, eventually using track 2 at CP Bloom to cross over onto CSX for the remainder of their trip to Glenwood. It's always interesting to me to see how railroads intermingle in this way, using one another's trackage to move cars from one terminal to another. In this instance as a summation, AVR comes out onto CSX under a Z symbol at Glenwood, using their trackage to get their cars to and from NS, then rinse and repeat on the way back. Up here in Buffalo for example, NS C93 uses CSX trackage to shuttle a transfer train across the border to CN in Fort Erie, ON. CPKC utilizes both CN's mainline for about 13 miles on that side, then another seven miles of CSX trackage on the U.S. side to interchange with NS here as well, or a slightly shorter distance when they're headed to Frontier Yard on CSX. CN uses CPKC's mainline in Welland to interchange cars to shortline carrier GIO Rail at Feeder. I could go on listing examples of this, but the concept is probably well conveyed at this point. Despite all the competition out there to move freight more effectively than the next guy, there's still elements of cohesion at play when you take a closer look. Just one of those cool aspects about railroading you might not always think about consciously when you're shooting these jobs.

Slightly unusual picture you may think. I liked the texture here and used the on camera flash to enhance it even more. It astonishes me how people can fly tip rubbish like this and still sleep at night.
