A trio of historic homes stand on stilts awaiting their foundation.

On the streets of Minsk.

House under spire - the famous Minsk building, which has already crossed the half-century mark.

Construction started in the early 1950s and was conducted taking into account the specifics of the climate. For example, all building facades stucco was performed not gypsum , and from concrete. Thanks to this lasting decoration have survived. Many districts of Minsk then lay in ruins or were gigantic ashes. New house with views of the embankment Svisloch builders have handed over in 1956. Tenants of the new building were pleased cozy, with a successful layout of the apartment. And on the first floor opened deli , which enjoyed great popularity among Minsk housewives. Minskers his home dubbed "Under the spire." Today, in the former deli - specialty sweet shop factory "Kommunarka". Several years ago, the status of the building and the entire complex has been changed. Now it is a monument of civil architecture of the Soviet period.

The design of itself of the "needle", reveted high-strength steel, manufactured in Moscow. The needle was crowned with her five-pointed star, decorated with laurel. This is one of the first post-war high-rises from the ground level to the star with laurel branches - almost 43 m.

Tower and spire - this is more a decorative element. Although the post-war years, when everyone lived in fear of war, the tower housed the guard post. Without leaving the open part of the observation, the guards through the window could conduct their observation. There had siren for warning of the danger, she was in charge of the civil defense system. Now quietly in the tower. Sometimes local workers come here for maintenance. The top of the tower is very small, it can fit a maximum of 3 people.

This picture was shot on a tripod with five exposures (-4..-2..0..+2..+4EV). I used Photomatix to create the HDR with tone mapping and detail enhanced. I increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. 1 layer mask to increase color and contrast in the afternoon sky. Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. Some dodging and burning to bring out details. Used Nik Sharpener Pro to sharpen image.

I was just driving home and saw this looong vacant lot suddenly being excavated for a new home construction. Presented in full HDR!

Although not completely clear in this 110 film scan, the sign reads...

"Ruby Wino Presents SEABREEZE ESTATES! From $75,000 to $110,00. Choice location! Featuring exclusive Porto-San bathrooms available. Call (203) 877-GYPS."

In 1974, those prices were quite high!

75,000 dollars would be worth $431,853.04 today.

110,000 dollars would be worth $633,384.46 today.

These inflated prices were all part of the sign's humor considering how crappy these houses really were.

They were building one every several weeks.

We biked past the sign for weeks thinking it might actually help in attracting buyers. One day the sign disappeared without a trace. Probably torn down by the construction crew chief. Hope he had a good laugh, though.

They're really taking their time.

Has the money run out?

$600,000 or thereabouts will put you in one of these beauties.

It was well on its way when we passed it a couple of weeks ago with shingles being conveyered to the roof.

In the beach community of Wildwood Crest, NJ I found this ostentatious home in the middle of a neighborhood of middle class summer homes. What were they thinking?

Solar is everywhere in Germany. This is a newly constructed home with near total solar covering.

The DIY craze was still the rage in 1957 and one should always were the best frock to paint the window frame in a caravan.

After the demolition of the old house on the property, the land has been graded and a quite large foundation has been completed. Actually, this photo was not shot at night. It was shot in broad daylight. Initial work in Snapseed and a lot of work in Afterlight have made this piece into what almost looks like a huge flash photo at night. Hope you like it.

Yeah, I had to look it up. I’m an artist, not a construction expert. But Google made it easy... it’s a track loader. Colorful one at that.

p.s. - let us know about it...we love seeing our photos in action!

Not terribly far from where my son resides they are finishing up contstruction on this new home. Palo Alto is pricey. That is an understatement! I’ve decided to withdraw my bid on the front doorknob. It would take six months worth of income, I’d bet!

Paint and glazing are complete, as far as I know. This home is about to be the most awesome residence in our neighborhood.

The bad news was that we had a water leak, somewhere.

The good news is that it wasn't underneath our house. It was outside, in a buried line, and it's been fixed.

While I was under the house to inspect the water lines, I took a photo that captures the, um, *cozy* space between the ground and the floor joists and sub-flooring.

This construction is typical of California houses built in the 1950s and early 1960s. Our house was completed in 1956.

Washington DC: A brief update on the curious home construction project on Irving Street NW, just east of Sherman Ave.

First it was the fake bricks being slathered into a template. Now, it seems, the windows were placed so oddly, the ornamental shutters can't fit on the far left side. Of course, this could be deliberate piece of design awesomeness that I'm too simple-minded to understand. I'm no architect, but, it looks like an improvised oopsie...

Years ago I built this from a kit, based on the RC-14 receiver design by Steve Price, published in Rad COM.

It had some nice features, and in recent times, I decided to resurrect the project to use in QRSS grabber experiments.

In this role it needs to have very good frequency stability which the original design did not have.

Hence the experiment with outboard fixed frequency Local Oscillators

When the owners decided to increase the square footage of this small home the easiest thing was to simply plop two additions on either side of the original floor plan. The difference in brick color clearly shows these add-ons. Rollover photo to display original house. What were they thinking?

The internals.

Amidon Powdered Iron Toroid cores and Silver Mica Capacitors

I made 3 of these, one for 3.5MHz, one for 7MHz (illustrated) and one for 14MHz.

They were built originally to work with my "Oner" transmitter as the latter has a rather ugly output signal, and needs to be well filtered before it can be allowed to pollute the amateur radio frequencies!

This "Eden Project" is an Eden Valley Radio Society project to construct from scratch a 70MHz QRP SSB transceiver.

The SSB is generated using the "filter method" with an IF of 11.0592MHz.

Ron Taylor G4GXO of Cumbria Designs has produced the design for us all to try to replicate and get going.

The three-way header plug nearest to the camera is for the receiver volume control pot.

No PCB has been produced, the objective is to build it from scratch using just PCB laminate.

This is a variation on the "Manhattan" method - IC's and associated components are built on small PCB "pads", with the remainder in a "point-to-point" style.

Some "dead bug" (also known as "Ugly") methodology is no doubt going to creep in here too.

The stages nearly completed so far are the RX product detector (short of its crystal at the moment), the AF pre-amp and the AF output stage.

When these stages are finished, it will be time to put the ICs in their sockets, power up, test and de-bug.

This is the first time I have used this method of construction, and I'm learning as I go - you certainly get very close to the circuit with this method!

Previously projects have used either PCB (pre-manufactured in the case of kits, or occasionally home-made) or Veroboard. I'm not the neatest worker in the world, as you can see!

The empty space at the top is to accommodate the TX modulator (left) and the Mic preamp (right)
