It has been a while since I've been out for some organized photo shooting activity, so please forgive my recent photo uploading delay ... In such cases, I usually bury myself in the photos of the past, trying to bring up memories and also practice some new programs and some beloved photo processing techniques ... The amazing, truly one of a kind balcony of the Great Monastery of Simonopetra, in Mount Athos is my proposal for today ...

The photo was taken in June 2013, during my last visit to the Holy Mountain ... I was standing speechless and motionless on the balcony, deeply enjoying whatever was offered to me via my senses ... When the line ferry - boat presented itself over the horizon, I knew I had to take the shot thus making presentable the true scale of the vista's depth ...

The single photo underwent HDR processing via my recently bought HDR Software "Easy HDR" and then I augmented the feeling by applying Orton effect on the final result ..

It had been raining for almost three days. I was quite frustrated not having any chances to take a decent shot. After all you can't visit Agio Oros every day and when you manage to do so you're not allowed to stay more than three nights.

Quite unexpectedly, on the second day the rain temporarily ceased and pockets of clear sky, combined with puffy but still menacing clouds, appeared.

I dared a rush upon the Skete trying to ''shoot'' as many frames as I could. I did, yet the most thrilling part was the unexpected encounter with a 92 year old monk, who was labouring his steps on the steep ground trying to reach his home. What he told me filled my eyes with tears...

Sunrise behind the church of Andechs (holy Mountain of the Bavarians)

The mighty, the sacred, the eternally mysterious - central to the identity of Japan and her people.

For me, a pilgrimage of sorts; to finally stand before this most beautiful of natural wonders, a deeply moving 24 hours in my life. Fuji-san leaves one breathless and bewildered. Parting earth and sky with remarkable symmetry, its beauty beyond description in text or letter, no poem powerful enough to create the emotion in one's heart and mind upon seeing for the first time, in person and close at hand.

I arose the second morning at 5am to witness first light falling on the sleeping giant, and the sunrise upon Lake Kawaguchiko before me.

This shot here is a little while later - this wonderful view was enjoyed from our balcony with its own private onsen, at the Hotel Kukuna. Highly recommended.

Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano and the tallest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776 meters (12,380 feet).

Pantokratoros monastery (abbey). Fresco painted on the ceiling of the external propylon’s dome: The Father Without Beginning (Ὁ Ἄναρχος Πατὴρ in Greek). The propylon is located in front of the monastery’s Southwestern Gate (outside). The gate is part of St. Panteleēmōn’s Tower.

Pantocrator means Almighty, Omnipotent, All-Powerful or Ruler of All Universes. The theological meaning or concept of this word goes infinitely further and deeper than a specific depiction in Christian iconography (the Christ Pantocrator icon). The monastery was erected earlier than in 1357 AD.

The Gothic pilgrimage church was built in 1463. It is also famous for the special pilgrimage of the community of Holzkirchen.

A 12 m long wooden pole wrapped in a red candlestick is carried on a 75 km march to Bogen.

Young men, who always take turns, carry this heavy giant candle, which is then standing upright, at a run up to the Mother of God on the mountain. A much-admired pious spectacle that takes place every year at Pentecost.

Question: Where is the drone pilot standing?

This is a shot of a bell projected above Mt. Athos (in the background). The bell belongs to the church of St. Nicholas at Cape Kanistro, Greece. When a bell rings, it invites the congregants to church; as Lent is about to start, this bell pictorially invites us all to to pray, repent and fast for the next forty days.

Croagh Patrick (Irish: Cruach Phádraig, meaning "(Saint) Patrick's Stack"), nicknamed the Reek, is a 764 m (2,507 ft) mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in Mayo, Ireland. It is 8 km (5 mi) from Westport, above the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. It is the third highest mountain in Mayo after Mweelrea, and Nephin. It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year, which is the last Sunday in July.

It forms the southern part of a U-shaped valley created by a glacier flowing into Clew Bay in the last Ice Age. Croagh Patrick is part of a longer east-west ridge; the westernmost peak being Ben Gorm.

There is a chapel on the summit, although this cannot be seen in this photograph because of the clouds on the summit. To the left of the photograph can be see a well worn path, which is the start of the main route taken to the summit.

This photograph was taken from the car park in the village of Murrisk, which is the main starting point for the walk to the summit.

Mt. Athos from afar (from 24 miles / 39 km away), viewed before sunset from Sithonia peninsula, Greece. The mountain rises to 6,670 ft (2,033 m) and has got very steep cliffs. It is listed in World Heritage sites by UNESCO.

It has been regarded as sacred throughout history: In ancient Greece it was considered Jove’s (Zeus’s) divine mountain; since AD 800 it has been known as “Holy Mountain” and has constituted the most important centre of Eastern Christian Orthodox monasticism. Holy Mountain is home to 20 monasteries where over 2,000 monks live.

This picture is one of those that brings back some very vivid memories. At 4100m, we didn't think that Marianne would be suffering from altitude sickness as she had previously been up to 4500+ before needing to come down. In the middle of the night at Annapurna Base Camp, in retrospect, I noticed she was getting exhausted just getting into the sleeping bag. Later that evening, bad headaches, worsening breathing prompted some of our guides to take her down a couple of hundred meters toward Macchapucchre base camp where we basically set up some blankets and sleeping bags on a flattish rock and tried to get some rest. In the end, I gave that up and just took pictures of the incredible scenes lit by the full moon.
