...on the bricks of the Helligåndskirken (Church of the holy ghost) in central Copenhagen. The church was originally built in the late 13th century, attached to a convent. It has been heavily rebuilt afterwards, with the perhaps biggest changes made under the supervision of the architect H. B. Storck, starting in 1878 (a year that still can be seen on the church).
In 1208, a dispute between King John and the Pope meant that burials in consecrated ground were forbidden for about 6 years. During this time, the townspeople of Basingstoke buried their dead on the slope north of the town. Later, the ground was consecrated, and became the town’s burial ground for the next 700 years, until the new cemetery opened in Worting Road in 1913.
The first chapel was built by 1280, with a Guild of Townsmen to oversee the site and collect offerings of money and land, left as bequests in return for prayers for life after death. What we see of the earlier chapel today is part of the west wall.
This photo shows the distinctive remains, tower and window arches of another chapel, added to the original one and built around 1525 by William Lord Sandys of The Vyne as a grand burial place for his parents and family [see Ian Richard’s Flashback, Gazette 10/12/2020]. The chapel was widely known for its great beauty, for its roof and above all for its painted glass windows. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Sandys’ family emblems are visible on the parapet and grave slabs. These include the hemp-breaker and cross raggulé.
Why did it fall into ruin? In the 1540s, Sandys’ chapel was caught up in the English Reformation, which saw the closure of all chantry chapels. Statues and other items used in worship were removed in what must have been a puzzling time for people. After the death of Edward VI, his sister Mary revived Catholic worship. In 1556 a charter was drawn up by Queen Mary, which established a school in the chapel. The schoolroom was attached to the west wall of the early chapel. Known as Queen Mary’s School, it survived as Queen Mary’s Grammar School for Boys and then, with comprehensive education, the name and endowment moved to Queen Mary’s College.

The Holy Ghost Ruins, Basingstoke. These ruins are just behind the mainline station in Basingstoke yet few people seem to know of them. "This was the main graveyard for Basingstoke from the 13th century until 1912 and ashes may still be interred here. It is also known as South View Cemetery.
The Holy Ghost Cemetery contains the Grade II listed ruins of two Chapels. The cemetery was consecrated in 1214 and a chapel, dedicated to the Holy Ghost, was completed around 1244. This building was greatly enlarged in 1524 by Lord Sandys of The Vyne, when he added the Chapel of the Holy Trinity to the south side of the chancel.

The image is a collage of around 50 separate photos, taken using a 100mm lens, the camera was set to auto exposure so the individual images have different brightnesses. The day was one of patchy, fast changing cloud so some of the component images were flat light and others full sunlight, and the sky changed from leaden to blue.
The Holy Ghost (and Chapel of the Holy Trinity) ruins and graveyard date back to 1208, the site is the home to the graves of Thomas Burberry ( founder of the Burberry empire), Aidan Liddell VC and is also believed to be the resting place of Mrs Blunden, who was buried alive twice and was the inspiration for the Victorian's having bells installed at burials that cold be rung from within the coffin in case of mistakes, the cricket commentator John Arlott was born, and lived in, the Cemetery Lodge,
Also known as Holy Ghost, Wild Celery, and Norwegian angelica.

“Introduction to the Cemetery
The burial ground on Chapel Hill has been in use from 1208 during the reign of King John when burials could not take place in consecrated ground due to a dispute with Pope Innocent III. The cemetery was consecrated in 1214 and The Chapel of the Fraternity of the Holy Ghost, was completed around 1244. The 13th Century building was greatly enlarged in 1524 by Lord Sandys of The Vyne, when he added the Chapel of the Holy Trinity to the south side of the chancel as a private burial place for the Sandys family. Both Chapels are now Grade II* listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. In 1858 the Cemetery was extended into the current footprint to accommodate the growing population and wealth of the town and is still being used today for the internment of ashes. Several important local figures are buried in the Cemetery including Thomas Burberry, the clothing manufacturer, Alfred Milward of Milwards Shoes, John Mares, Supplier of polar clothing and raincoats and John Aidan Liddell, Victoria Cross. And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

Here's some precious pictures I took back from July 1997- November 1997 of the sky & sun. I call them "Heaven's Door/Gate". They would even come out when I would take pictures of trees and almost level to ground. Many of these pictures for some reason cried a 'Oily" like substance. We have also found them covered in "gold" sparkles. I don't know why, but most all my pictures were doing this after our first visit from Audreys. You can even see the stains on many of them. How beautiful!! What I find sweet is that it looks like the "Host" is surrounding many of the doors! I just think they are so pretty!

Taken in Holyghost canyon, near Pecos, New Mexico. The geraniums are lost in the grasses when they are green, but in October they assert their presence beautifully.
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Pity the birds are not closer, and that my successive shots were a bit blurred. Obviously the less than friendly looking approach resolved in a secure landing and no violence at all :)

This is probably the most famous panel in Horseshoe Canyon - the Holy Ghost panel of the Great Gallery. The largest pictograph is about six feet tall.
When I made this hike, I got an early start, having camped up on the rim. Consequently, I had the entire canyon to myself. Well, me and a few deer and some very noisy burros. After spending some time here, a volunteer ranger arrived, just about when I was ready to leave. He was a tad surprised to see me, as most people arrive later in the morning. These volunteers hike in daily to provide information to hikers and security to the panels.
There are several theories as to how old these glyphs are. Some date them to over 4,000 years. More recent research suggests a much younger date. Here is some interesting reading on the subject: westerndigs.org/barrier-canyon-utah-rock-art-younger/
