During my first year of soaking up West Coast life I took a trip to California's biggest lake, the Salton Sea, out of curiosity of what a real life salt lake would be like.
Would it smell like the ocean? Would I be able to touch the water? Would it be pretty?
The answer to all of the above is a resounding NO! Ugh! Hell NO! It smelled SO bad!
Think sulfur, cow manure, dead fish, salt and vinegar. That's what the Salton Sea smells like.
It was so bad I had to cover my face and I had to squint because it was burning my eyes. It's the sort of nauseating smell that sticks to your clothes, in your nostrils, and in your mouth for hours later. It gave both my boyfriend and I headaches that lasted for hours after we left.
What's crazy is some people actually live in homes beside it!!!!
It's so toxic that not much can survive in it, as you can see from the thousands of dead fish carcasses on the beach. It is habitable but barely and every year, thanks to agricultural runoff, increased salinity, and no where for the water to run out - it gets worse. It's a noxious soup of botulism (yes literally,) over abundant algae blooms, salt, agriculture runoffs and pesticides.
And according to the locals it's great to jet ski on. Yeeeea.
