I think it used to be a restaurant. i took this photo a long time ago (2013). My friend Marcia helped me ( thanks!) to find something about this place : This Hobbit House was a meeting place connected to the First Baptist Church at Burrard and Nelson Street.
J'avais fait cette photo en marchant au centre-ville... j'ai retrouvé et maintenant je la partage avec vous. Ce batiment était un lieu de rencontre lié à l'église Baptiste sur la rue Burrard/ Nelson. ~Bonne semaine.~

The Hobbit House across from Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Los Angeles. One of several original "Storybook Style" private homes built on Dunn Drive between 1946 & 1970 and designed by former Disney artist Lawrence Joseph.
The "Mushroom Houses" of Charlevoix, Michigan are an amazing collection of unique homes designed and built from 1918-1975, by self-taught architect Earl Young. The homes, also nicknamed "Gnome Homes", are constructed of local materials like limestone, boulders, and field stone, with cedar shake roofs. They are designed to blend into the landscape. Young built 26 of these homes, and four commercial buildings in Charlevoix.
This house, and other examples of Mushroom Houses, are on Park Street, built in a site with a view of Lake Michigan.

The Hobbit House
A walk in the woods around Drumlanrig Castle, and just off one of the paths, you find this unusual little shed in the woods. With the dappled light through the trees, the moss covered roof, I just the immediate feeling of this is what a Hobbit house should look like;)

“A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.”

One of Earl Young's Hobbit houses is town. I love the fall colors around this house.

Tonight's our last night and we're really gonna miss the zen tranquility of this fairytale treehouse of a place....and all its quirkiness and small groups of uppy and downy stairs leading to a mini labyrinth of rooms, each with a few more stairs itself, off to the left and/or right.
It's been a treat to enjoy this unique castle and admire its 'labour of love' handmade design and fittings and such - including the hand-threaded rope fences/guards you see here that are repeated throughout the house & garden. And the (copper?) soldered pipes and elbows that not only make up the bannister, but also all cupboard door/drawer handles, towel racks, and some shelving throughout. This place is so unique and set back from the hustle & bustle (well, not that there's much of that here ), it's been the perfect top-of-the-world hideaway and mental spa. I wish I could bottle this all up somehow and take it with me for sustenance.

Hobbit hotel
I like the design of this bug hotel. Very hobbit-y!
P104-4242 Taken at: Falkland Palace, Fife, Scotland
My adventure with Matt Emmett took me to this unusual abandoned house in the middle of the countryside. It was made by one man years ago to house sheep, but since he moved to Scotland it is now unused. It has since been nick named the Hobbits house.
While visiting the house, we heard a tractor coming along the small road, Matt ducked into the house and I laid down in the grass, I though the tractor would just pass and not see us, but he must have been checking the place as before I knew it he was standing over my head and telling me rudely to f**k off. We made a swift exit and hoped he wouldn't plow us down with his combine harvester.
A rather funny few minutes we had laughing at the whole situation as we walked back to the car, could have really done withe a hobbit ring to create invisibility from the scary ogre man.

FuLong knows just how to scoot up to the bars and grab onto the hold. He such a smart little bear!
This dream home of poet Robinson Jeffers—a cramped stone cottage with low ceilings, minuscule windows, and heavy, somber furnishings—seems all wrong. Why block out that view? Why so small? So dark? Yet five minutes into a tour of Tor House, you find it hard to imagine a more magical dwelling.
In 1914, Jeffers and his wife, Una, settled in Carmel, drawn to the rugged coastline that reminded them of Great Britain. "It was evident that we had come, without knowing it," Jeffers later wrote, "to our inevitable place." That year they bought a large piece of land on a cliff at Carmel Point that encompassed a dramatic outcropping of rock—a tor in Scottish Gaelic. Una wanted a house modeled on a Tudor barn, so the couple hired a stonemason; Jeffers signed on as his apprentice, working until "my fingers had the art to make stone love stone."
Though they entertained a string of distinguished guests at Tor House, from Ansel Adams to Charlie Chaplin, the Jefferses—for philosophical reasons— embraced a strenuously modest lifestyle. They relied for decades on driftwood for heating and candles for light, and their decor was sober and minimal. Now, as then, a few Oriental rugs cover the red-wood floors. A 1905 Steinway baby grand—their lone luxury—dominates a living room the size of a contemporary closet. The whole effect might have been claustrophobic. Instead, it is intensely cozy, like a Hobbit house or one of Beatrix Potter’s rabbit holes.

LEGO recreation of Architect Paul Merrick's Merrick House in West Vancouver B.C.
This model was created for my 2023 Bricktacular West Coast Modern Show that was hosted by the West Vancouver Art Museum.
The Merrick House is part tree fort, part hobbit house, and part genius carpenter eccentric. The home features 17 levels with a stunning 40 foot fireplace in a cathedral like living room. This home is truly one of a kind.
This model was the most challenging home to recreate using LEGO bricks. The home famously has only one 45 degree angle and the rest are freeform making it difficult to replicate with the available LEGO element geometry. This model was a difficult but very enjoyable challenge.
This model is now in possession of the home owners.
