Tower stairwell of Battle Abbey Gatehouse. Within the estates is the field of The Battle of Hastings 1066, where the Norman army finally met the Saxon army. Here, more than 10,000 were slain in a nine hour battle that changed the course of known history. In 1070, Pope Alexander II ordered the Normans to do penance for killing so many during the conquest of England. In response, William the Conqueror vowed to build an abbey where the Battle of Hastings had taken place, with the high altar of its church on the supposed spot where Saxon King Harold Godwinson was slain on 14 October 1066. This gatehouse protects the abbey and estates. Battle Abbey, High Weald Area North of Hastings, East Sussex, English South Coast.
