Joseph and Mary Hessler built this pine and hemlock log cabin in 1854-1856 on Mission Point Peninsula. According to information given at Mission Point Lighthouse Museum, the Hesslers being non-citizens could not own the property on which the cabin was built. They became citizens in 1859, and their final deed was signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1861.
It may not look like much, but I am sure it seemed like a cozy mansion to the Hesslers on cold Northern Michigan nights in the wilderness.
Mission Point Lighthouse, built in 1870, guided ships through West Traverse Bay, until it was decommissioned in 1933. Today, it is owned by Peninsula Township, and is staffed mainly by volunteers. A small fee is charged, and donations are accepted to view the museum and to climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse.
Many viewers have commented that The Guardian Building (originally The Union Trust Company Building) reminded them of a church.
This picture shows approximately half of the bank lobby on the main floor. Imagine the original bank building with 60-90 bank teller cages lining the entire length of both sides of this "nave". The ceiling was composed of a 3/4 inch (1.9cm) of horsehair and coated with a layer of plaster cement. Then, a canvas layer was applied, and painted with designs reminiscent of the patterns of Navajo rugs. This was a sound-deadening system.
The "altar piece" ( I suppose) was the three-story mural of the map of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Highlighted were the major Michigan moneymakers of the1890s to 1920s: mining, manufacturing, lumber, fishing, commerce, and agriculture. It was completed in 1929, unfortunately the year of the beginning of "The Great Depression".
This superbly decorated Art-Deco bank building was nicknamed "The Cathedral of Finance." So, if the earlier pictures reminded you of a church (reprised in the first comment below) --you were very observant : -)
What once was, is no longer! When Hurricane Ian came through, it took these structures with it. The small buildings could not take another strong storm. Over the years, little by little the sea and Mother Nature, had it's way.
BUILT IN FLORIDA IN 1981 on Ten Thousand Island which is south of Marco Island, and only accessible via water. The island belongs to a larger group of Ten Thousand Islands. The ultra-modern Dome House is a complex of stilted concrete igloos slowly being reclaimed by the sea.

Known simply as "The Castle, it's a landmark icon in "Heritage Hill", a historic district of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was built for the lumbermen Fox brothers in 1884-1886 (architect: William G. Robinson). The granite block castle is in the Chateauesque style of architecture. (Romanesque ?)
It was converted to a restaurant in 1978, but when my wife and I visited in 2019, it was the home of the Stonecastle Dentistry.
Two blocks from the Frank Lloyd Wright house (pictured in first comment below), The Castle is a Registered Michigan Historical Site at 455 Cherry St. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Note: Despite three sources of information (on-site historical marker, Wikipedia entry, text "Walking Tours of Heritage Hill", Thomas H. Logan) that all ID this castle as Chateauesque, I think Bill ( Onasil~Bill Badzo-66M ) has a more credible ID of Romanesque style. Thanks Bill.

A lamp and windows on the extension to a 140 year old house on the Main Street of Unionville. The old building houses a popular restaurant that is over 40 years old. But like all the restaurants in the area, business is slow because of COVID-19 and winter.
Two businesses that survive to this day on the waterfront in Launceston, are the old Esk Brewery (Boags) and the Tasmanian Flour Mills. They set up here when ships docked alongside and filled their hulls with beer and flour for the mainland.
There is something I found pleasing to my eye in the geometric shapes (form) and the way the light and shade work together in this scene.

In the 1800s Bergen was Europe’s biggest wooden city, a distinctive city environment with closely spaced wooden buildings, busy streets, markets and alleys. At old Bergen open air Museum you can experience some of this atmosphere and it has today 55 wooden houses, most of which originally stood in the centre of Bergen.
The history of Redpath Memorial Presbyterian Church is as unique as the beach stones used to make this church in 1921. After a fire destroyed the original church, Reverend Redpath worked tirelessly to build this little chapel. After he died in 1926, the small congregation renamed it in his honor.
When lumbering in the area declined, the population decreased, and eventually the little church was abandoned. It stood empty for decades, until the 1960s when the church reopened to a small congregation. Today, summer services are conducted , mainly by lay persons and visiting speakers.

St Bartholomew's Church operated as an Anglican church from 1841 to 1967. It is located in Prospect . Blacktown Council acquired the property and has restored it, with an official re-opening in 2001.
I have a lot of family members here in the surrounding cemetery. Some recent others from way back when it opened, I also live not far from this historic site. This is one of our early Churches in Australia.
William Lawson one of three men to first cross the Blue Mountains is buried here on 16 June 1850.
Tintern was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales. The present-day remains are a mixture of building works covering a 400-year period between 1131 and 1536. Very little remains of the first buildings but you will marvel at the vast windows and later decorative details displayed in the walls, doorways and soaring archways.
The lands of the abbey were divided into agricultural units or granges, worked on by lay brothers.
On September 3, 1536 Abbot Wyche surrendered Tintern Abbey to King Henry VIII’s officials and ended a way of life which had lasted 400 years.
World's first steam powered clock
Historic Gastown
Vancouver, British Columbia
Canada
The insides of this clock is where the magic begins....
Built in 1977. Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver. Owned by the City of Vancouver, BC Canada
The steam clock's plaque reads:
THE GASTOWN STEAM CLOCK
Designed and built by
Raymond L. Saunders
Horologist
The world's first steam powered clock has been created for the enjoyment of everyone. The live steam winds the weights and blows the whistles. Every 4.5 minutes one steel weight will travel by steam power to the top of the clock. The gravity driven "falling ball" drive was 'engineered' by Douglas L. Smith. Each quarter hour the clock will sound the Westminster Chimes. The large whistle will sound once on the hour. The steam is supplied by the underground system of Central Heat Distributor's Limited. The component parts cost $42,000 and the clock weighs over two tons.
A few years ago the clock was refit and is not entirely steam powered. It also has three small electric motors to help operate two internal fans, one of which blows the steam out the top, and another that controls the valves that play the tunes on the five steam whistles mounted atop the clock case.
The large central whistle, which was taken off the CPR steam tug Naramata, counts off the full hours while the four auxiliary whistles chime the Westminster Quarters every quarter hour. The number of chimes matches the number of quarter hours that have passed.

Fayette is a "ghost town" in Upper Michigan.
Fayette, a "company town" that was active from 1867-1891, controlled all aspects of the workers' lives. They rented rooms in the company houses, bought food and supplies in the company store, saw the company dentist, and of course, labored in the company mill or supplied services to the other company workers. Not much money was left over for "savings" or for other personal uses.
When more economical methods of extracting iron from the iron ore of Michigan's mines, Fayette quickly disappeared, but the well-built buildings stood the test of time. Cedar from local sources, and dolomite from the nearby cliffs were very durable materials.
Today, Fayette is being restored as a Michigan Historic State Park.
This building's flint chequered exterior stonework echoes a chequered and contrasting dark and light history.
Trinity Guildhall of King’s Lynn dates from the 1420s. It was originally the meeting place of the religious Guild of Merchants of the Holy Trinity. The Guild was abolished at the English Reformation of Henry VIII.
The hall's uses darkened. Half became a prison - the remainder a House of Correction for those "unwilling to work". A courtroom was added in 1767 to ensure an adequate supply of inmates,. The town gaoler had a house built next door in 1784. Cells were still used as the town lock-up until 1937!
For the comforts of other half, Georgian Assembly Rooms and a Card Room were added in 1768. The building is now the Town Hall with function spaces for more cheerful events like weddings.

This building housed a series of printing companies from the 1870s to the 1940s in the hamlet of Slingerlands. The printing companies mostly served the railroads that used the D&H line running in back of the building. More recently it has been turned into apartments, undergoing major renovation just a few years ago.

Actually a great model: Living and working in one house. Both are spatially separated and there is a separate front door for every purpose..
In 1912, W. J. Zorn, the owner/editor of the Howell County Gazette, had the building at 102 Leyda Street constructed to serve as the offices of the newspaper. The building's corner entrance which is topped by a conical roofed oriel, and its elaborate stone detailing make it one of the most impressive and most memorable buildings in West Plains."
