There are only 51 other remaining examples and many of these are decommissioned and in a state of decay. The Twentieth Century Society has an active campaign to record them. Designed by Bruce Martin and introduced in 1968 the K8 was a radical change to suit the mood of the Sixties. A typical Sixties modular design manufactured in cast iron it has flattened dome, minus the Crown that had adorned earlier incarnations. It had ‘practical’ adjustments from the K6 with one large pane of glass per side and with a lighter aluminum door. This perhaps proved its downfall as vandals found great amusement in shattering a huge piece of glass whereas previously they had to make do with smaller individual panes. The last bastion of this type seems to be on caravan parks, often in colours other than red, either over painted or special variants. This was the last of the red kiosks to be produced prior to the Stainless Steel “KX” range.
