Pura Besakih lies at the foot of Mt. Agung, an active volcano on the island of Bali. As the center of Bali's Hindi religion, this holy of holies has remained here for centuries despite numerous volcanic eruptions, all of which have spared the huge temple complex that honors Hindu gods.

Another look at the Jagdish Temple that blew me away. Maybe I was so struck by it because I wasn't expecting it - the surprise as much as its splendor that has stuck with me - but it is amazing.

Wikipedia: Phanom Rung (Thai: ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้ง – Phanom Rung Stone Castle), is a Hindu Khmer Empire Temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 meters (1,319 ft) elevation. It is located in Buriram Province in the Isan region of Thailand, and was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Srisaket. It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolizes Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling. The Phanom Rung sanctuary compound was constructed over several phases, dated by means of iconography of its art and architectural styles together with its inscriptions. These comprise two foundations of sacred brick buildings of 10th century B.C., the minor sanctuary of 11th century, the central sanctuary built by King Suryavarman II’s relative Narentratitaya in 12th century and two Bannalais (libraries) of the 13th century. Further sacred buildings built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII in 13th century, including the Royal attire Changing Pavilion, the Kudi Rishis of Nong Bua Ray, the medical center or hospital (Arokayasala) and Prasat Ban Bu, a rest house with fire where travelers could shelter (Dharmasala) on the plain at the foot of Phanom Rung, alongside the road linking Angkor and Phimai. These evidence an important vice-regal center on and around the mountain that flourishes from the 10th to the 13th centuries.

Stopped at a roadside stand for some Masala chai, which I love by the way, and struck up a conversation with the gentleman pictured here. He was both incredibly well travelled and well educated but became disenfranchised with his life and decided to walk away from it all. I am not willing to give up my comfy bed but makes you think especially around Christmas which in many places has become more about commercialism than spirituality.

Wikipedia: Prasat Mueang Tam ( 'lowland castle') is a Khmer Hindu Temple in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, Thailand. It is primarily in the Khleang and Baphuon styles, which dates its primary phases of construction to the late-10th and early-11th centuries. It has a flat concentric plan, with a central sanctuary and two surrounded successively by an inner enclosure, ponds, and an outer enclosure. Kodaikanal is one of my favorite places that are most picturesque and beautiful. My visit there was very memorable and gave me some of my best photos. This man I saw standing outside a Hindu temple. He drew my attention immediately. He had wrapped himself in a shawl and his head with a muffler. He was stoic. His eyes so blank, unblinking, unmoved and almost eerie. His sunken cheeks, gray eyebrows and beard revealing his years of endurance. He stood like a statue though surrounded by so much hustle and bustle around the temple.

Taman Ayung, meaning "beautiful garden", is the second-largest temple in Bali. It is a World Heritage Site as one of the five sites defined by UNESCO in the Subak cultural landscape of Bali. Taman Ayun Temple is unique, both in aesthetics and as an essential part of the local irrigation system, or subak.

The tall, multi-tiered shrines with black thatched roofs are called Meru. They are built in odd-numbered tiers (3, 5, 7, 9, or 11), symbolizing the sacred Mount Meru in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. These shrines honor different gods and ancestral spirits. Balinese temples, known as pura, are not only places of worship but also vital cultural centers. The layout often follows mandala principles, with inner and outer sanctums. Rituals, offerings (canang sari), and temple festivals are central to Balinese Hinduism, which blends indigenous animism with Indian Hindu influences.

The iconic Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, is inside the caldera of the now extinct volcano. Built in the 17th century in worship of the main Hindu trinity, Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva, as well as the lake goddess, Dewi Danu. It is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danuis as Lake Beratan importance in irrigation in central Bali.

Hindu temples have a flagpole between their entrance and the inner sanctum, the holy of holies. These poles are extravagantly decorated and often colored in gold. On high feast days they flutter lots of colorful flags, but also when there are none they're very imposing structures.

This temple dates from the early 11th century CE. It's devoted to Shiva.

It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolizes Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling.

One of the most well-known elements of the temple is a decorative lintel placed above the eastern entrance to the central sanctuary. It depicts a reclining Vishnu or Vishnu Anantasayin, and is known in Thai as Thap Lang Narai Banthomsin (ทับหลังนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์).

The lintel is best known for its restitution from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988. It had been stolen from the temple site in the 1960s and was acquired by the museum in 1967, where it was displayed for over twenty years, described as "the Birth of Brahma with Reclining Vishnu on a Makara". In early 1988, as restoration of the temple neared completion, calls were made by several parties in Thailand for its return. The issue became the subject of intense media attention, with some even accusing the US Government of facilitating the theft. The Thai government entered negotiations with the museum, which was unwilling to consider an unconditional return, since it had acquired the item in good faith. Finally, in October, the museum agreed to repatriate the lintel in exchange for a donation from the Chicago-based Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation. The lintel's arrival in Thailand on 10 November was widely celebrated, and was covered live on the national TV pool. It was restored to its original position on 7 December, marking the completion of the temple's restoration.
