Christmas light-up trail is a stunning light-up trail that illuminates the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire, England. This photo didn't make it to the cut because i lost the original files (right after I came back from Mƻnster, the only harddrive I had there to unload my memory cards was my mp3, I slamed on it when i came back, and not only I twisted my ankle but I also lost all the files on that mp3 player)

The late Brian Forsyth did a massive amount of research for this photograph, which deserves to be reproduced in full. In 1997 Brian wrote: This marvellous aerial view shows a part of Arbroath that has changed almost beyond recognition. Thought to date from about 1946, it clearly shows air-raid shelters in the back yards of various tenements in Helen Street, St Mary Street, and Howard Street. In the top quarter, Cairnie Loan, the continuation of St Vigeans Road can be seen with Tam Smeaton's farm visible just beyond Inverbrothock Public School. Just above this is the horseshoe shaped swathe in the field which looks like preliminary work for erection of pre-fabs in Cairnie Crescent. This was one of Arbroath's two prefabricated sites, the other having been adjacent to The Elms. Long low-loaders were commonly seen passing along Addison Place and Lochlands Street en route to deliver pre-fabs to the site. It is summer; the trees are in full foliage and there are stooks in the fields beyond. The shadows would suggest that it is around midday, as the view is taken almost due north/south. At the tome, there was a regular Edinburgh/Aberdeen express which stopped at Arbroath at noon, and that may be it sitting at the station. To the east of the railway station can be discerned The Linies, which carried freight traffic to and from the harbour. The rails were removed about 30 years ago and much of the ground has been given over to car parking. There is not much traffic on the roads due to post-war petrol rationing. However, the large car in the station forecourt could be Greenhowe's, Bruce's or Beattie's taxi. Study the picture and you can trace the town's industrial heritage. Shanks' and Fraser's large premises are clear, but can you spot the textile works - the Hillie, Corsar's, Wilson and Cunningham's, Spring Gardens, Netherward, St Rollox and of course the flagship of the town's textile industry until only a few years ago, Messrs Francis Webster's Alma Works (at bottom right), all lining the busy Brothock which provided them with the water which, in the early days, was the motive force. The island in the middle of the burn, just behind Webster's, indicates the Mawkin Pool. Also clearly visible are the Baltic and Inch Mills, in Dens Road and Hume Street respectively, which, during the Second World War, were barracks for Polish and Royal Air Force personnel. Older readers will remember Keptie Street as it was. At the bottom left of the picture is the sun-shaded faƧade of Drew Brown's grocery shop, and the neighbouring Buttercup Dairy, A.K. Adamson's outfitters and Dundas's Cash House. Nearer the railway station is the Imperial Hotel, favoured by commercial travellers, and the sun-shaded display window of Richard David, tobacconist. This shop was later acquired by former Arbroath FC footballer, Colin McNab. Finally, towards the hinterland, heading off towards the Braes of Angus and the distant Grampians, a close inspection will show Kirkton farms, Brigton, then Nether, Upper and West Newbigging, as well as the estates at Magungie and Letham Grange.
