17 degrees means what you is what you get and stays frozen for a long time. The colors were frosty, from the sky to the water.

The idea behind this image was to take a single RAW file and create a soft pastel of various colors almost like a painting, but in a photograph.

This scene was photographed along the Owyhee river in Adrian Oregon.

This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. I can't believe it took me this long to go there.

I have seen this referred to as Little Zigzag Creek and Little Zigzag river at various places. The map says it's a river. Hiking websites call it a creek.

I made a return trip to the Barlow Wayside Trail last weekend. We had some wonderful sunlight soming through the trees as evening approached. It lit up he branched in a most spectacular way.

The western forests around Mt Hood are some of the mossiest , ferniest places in the world. Gaia and I were exploring today, looking at places to photograph, and we came across the Barlow Wayside Park. Many of you already know if you have followed my work for more than a few years that I am an infrastructure geek. I love bridges, roads, and buildings, but only if they are old, and preferrably historic. I have posted about the Historic Columbia River Highway, the Saint Johns Bridge, the Hood River Hotel, and places like those for years. One historical roar that I have been curious about, but have not been able to really sink my teeth into, is the Barlow Road. It was part of the Oregon Trail, and parts of it still exist. I drove on two sections of it today, and the second section made no sense based on where the first section was. So... It's time to look at the original route, and see how it fits together, and do some more exploring in the area.

There is a creek called Little Joe Creek that runs through this area, but it's not of much interest at this spot. The trees, with their wavy, moss covered branches are much more interesting. That said, I think I'm going to go back and see if the creek has some more interesting things to show.

I took some 8x10 black and whites there too, so hopefully I will be able to post those after I develop them.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn't, and I made it out dry.

I was in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness earlier in January. It was a miserable, rainy day: the kind of day that grows the moss you see everywhere in this picture. I overexposed this one, or, more truthfully, I let the camera overexpose it. I started to make it look like it actually did on that day, but I decided that I like this better.

This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. It is located in the foothills west of Mt. Hood. I am taking a hatis from my explorations of the Columbia Gorge to focus on the Mt. Hood area. I hope to do some hikng and more photography in the area very soon. I want to see how the seasons change there.

This is from a few years ago, back before the Eagle Creek Fire, and the Covid-19 pandemic when someone could roam the Columbia Gorge trails at will. I do miss those days.

I took the Twirly Camera out to the Zigzag River a couple of weeks ago, and made a 1.5 second exposure on a bridge at the Paradise Park Trailhead. The sun was almost shining, as it sometimes does in the pacific northwest, and a little dappled light flitted among the branches. I almost destroyed the film when I opened the camera back, thinking that I had used the last picture, but had not, then I almost destroyed it while loading it on the reel in the darkroom, and then almost destroyed it by forgetting which step I was on while developing it. I got two usable pictures out of 6. That's a 1/3 success. I'll take it.

I was in the Gorge last Saturday for what turned out to be a very short hike. I went out too late to make it to Upper McCord Creek falls, but I wanted to get a decent way up. That was not happening, because the rain started in earnest, and darkness was falling by the time I made it about a quarter mile. That's okay. I got this picture.

Conveying this scene was a challenge. I wanted to show how blue the water and skies can be in the early morning hours at Lake Owyhee in the Summer months.

The clouds were white and wispy so to control the high contrast I used "tone priority" in camera to protect the highlights from being blown out.

The lower foreground bushes have so many beautiful colors, showing greens and yellows.

The lower rock formations show a white, low water line against the teal blue water.

The washout. Technically this part of the trail is officially closed. But hikers have created their own routes through and around it. We actually saw a trail work crew who said the official trail would be open this month. I was expecting this to be more difficult, but, thanks to the low flow, we had no troubles crossing. Pretty impressive to see how much this landscape changed as a result.

A mere half hour prior to this scene, our group was trudging slowly across snow fields in a complete white out. This was our first day the four of us had on the Timberline Trail and after about 9 miles of hiking, we finally saw Mt Hood. I actually prefer being out in inclement weather like this, it makes things more interesting! Plus I can get shots like this. More to come from the Timberline Trail!

Hiking the Crooked River Gorge in Central Oregon. March 2013. In the distance are the Three Sisters. Olympus XZ-1.

Replaced horrible original with a new scan and post processing 7/1/20. I had this picture reversed for years. That has been corrected, along with the color balance. I knew that there was a good picture hiding in there.

I shot this in late summer 2001. Wahkeena Falls was one of my favorite falls in the Columbia Gorge until they erected the new viewing platform, which blocked some of the lower part of the cascade.

As I was on my way down from Black Butte, I found myself stopping every few yards just to take in the view again. Way better than it was hiking up in the dark.
