The River Alt meets The Mersey and Irish Sea

Arriving at Hightown - 19.4.23.

On our return from Ohio, we were disappointed to have very overcast skies in the Amish country of Ohio, but we were fortunate to have a beautiful afternoon for our drive through Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and neighboring Highland County, Virginia. This was taken on VA 640 in the Blue Grass Valley, above Hightown, Virginia, one of our favorite areas of Virginia. Best in light box.

See my comment below regarding the elevation of Highland County, which some sources refer to as "Little Switzerland."

On the Merseyrail Network serving the Liverpool City Region and beyond. Hall Road Station is the most northerly station serving the Crosby area of Sefton Borough. Southwards is Blundellsands & Crosby Station and northwards is Hightown. The EMU in the station is headed for Southport and is a Class 507 No 020.

A good spot for birding with Corn Buntings, Yellowhammers, Whitethroats, Lapwing, Quail, Grey Partridge as well as rarer birds turning up such as Montagu's Harrier.

Key Characteristics:

• Relatively flat land

• Arable fields or ‘moss’ woodland

• Absence of hedgerows and hedgerow trees

• Wide expansive and sweeping views

• Open and exposed

• Often containing tranquil areas

• Dark peaty soil to mossland proper

• Frequent occurrence of low-lying mists and fogs

• Lack of important roads through the area

• Elevated farm tracks

• Use of open ditches as field boundaries

• Importance to wildlife

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Altcar

Great Altcar is a village and civil parish in West Lancashire, England, close to Formby on the West Lancashire Coastal Plain. The name Altcar is Norse meaning "marsh by the Alt". The church of St Michael and All Angels is a timber framed structure dating from 1879.

The area is now intensively farmed. An area called The Moss is situated to the north, and is characterized by drainage dykes.

Altcar hosted hare coursing's Waterloo Cup from 1836 to 2005, originally with the patronage of William Philip Molyneux, 2nd Earl of Sefton. Altcar Rifle Range, established in 1860, is actually in Hightown.

A photo I made during a late-winter Saturday outing to Highland County, Va., for the annual maple festival. Didn't get much from the maple festival, but I did manage this shot of Hightown in the Bluegrass Valley of Highland County. ©2019 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com

Near Hightown Beach.

Taken at Alt Estuary, Hightown nr, Southport. These daisies were growing right at the edge of the dunes overlooking the beach. By positioning myself low down and looking into the sun I tried to get an unusual and dramatic image rather than a boring one with the sun behind me. It's not my best sun-infused phot but I quite like it

OK, Last shot now i promise. ! This is my last shot of the evening down at the River Alt .5 shot HDR .Best viewed in Light Box.

The light was just right and the clouds and sunset perfect. Taken at the River Alt estuary at Hightown, Merseyside.

Sometimes I think the simplest of shots can be quite effective and i've always like the 'sweeping' landscape shots ... im not sure what the technical name is but you know the ones I mean ... a 1sec exposure and you pan the camera :)

Whilst out at Crosby the other week I decided to give it ago and I quite liked the results .. .hopefully it works well. Minimalistic it may be but I like its simplicity :)

Over on the coast at Merseyside, a stunning evening scene last autumn

507008 is seen arriving at Hall Road, having run two miles through open countryside from their last call at Hightown, whilst working a Southport to Hunts Cross service. To the left of the frame is the site of the former Hall Road Depot which has now had houses built on it. Also visible to the left of the frame is the rarely used turn-back siding which can be used for turning back trains should the timetable go to pot.

Seen at Hightown Station on Merseyrail's Northern Line from Liverpool to Southport. Is this brightly coloured Merseyrail train advertising The Beatles Story exhibition at Liverpool's Albert Dock also a tribute to the long disputed Beatles' 'Train Song'?
