The golden-hour view towards the tiered buildings of Market Street, Cockburn Street and High Street takes in the City Art Centre, Edinburgh City Chambers, the Spire of Tolbooth Kirk, the dome of the Museum on the Mound, and to the far right, the double towers of The New College of the University of Edinburgh.

“I cherish dead roses as they live between the pages of my books. I believe, a fresh rose is loved for its beauty but the dead one is beyond beauty.” – A.K. (writer).

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" the 8th of August is "fading beauty in flora". This rain spoiled rose bloom, which is slowly fading as it dies, I found in the gardens of an old Church of England in the Victorian country town of Inverleigh. I was very struck by the spattering of spots on the bloom and the crêpe like texture of the inner petals as they started to wither and die, and even though it is far from its pristine beauty when it was fresh, I still consider it very beautiful – just in a less traditional way. I decided that to add to the sense of decay for the theme this week, I would strip this photograph of most of its colour, and I gave it an old tin type tatted edge. I hope that you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile.

Inverleigh is a town in Victoria, Australia located twenty-eight kilometres west from the City of Geelong and eighty-seven kilometres from the state capital, Melbourne. The first European known to have visited Inverleigh was the surveyor J.H. Wedge who arrived in 1835, probably naming the Leigh River after his Tasmanian farm 'Leighlands'. Very soon thereafter the Weatherboard Station land was taken up either by George Russell or by station manager David Fisher on behalf of The Derwent Company. It was claimed that the weatherboard homestead built by the station manager was Victoria's first weatherboard homestead. The name of the station is now commemorated by Weatherboard Road. Inverleigh Primary School began as a Presbyterian church school in 1865 and was taken over by the Victorian government in 1873. A residence was built at the school in 1912, while the school was extended in 1956. A second school, Murkeduke State School, opened south-west of the township on the 10th of September 1917 and closed on the 2nd of August 1932. The Post Office opened on 11 October 1856.

I didn't quite stop down enough for this, it's only at 5.6 so had to do a bit of sharpening in post. Hopefully it looks ok?

This is my home town and it is full of history, including a 12th century castle and cathedral and of course the regular Charles Dickens festivals

You know, I normally don't photograph too much "new" neon, sticking mainly to the old, or the odd. This though... whooo. It's a big sign, and all that blue neon just grabbed me and shook me. I feel it's one of the best designed new neon signs I've seen in a long time. To me, it just has "it". I don't think the photo just it justice at all. Stand there in the rain and stare at it. Then you'll get the impact.

A scene along High Street, Braunston. Unusually, no parked cars in view, so I grabbed the opportunity for a shot, and just moments before the sun disappeared for the rest of the day too!

On a walk around the city to catch up on what's been happening while I was on Holiday in Australia August 18, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.

There were lot more buildings going up and seems to be more people about. The day wasn't good weather wise for shots as it was very dull and gloomy.

The old Milk Bar, High Street, Daventry. It is now a Turkish/Mediterranean grill which I have never tried.

Nice to catch a few autumnal leaves whist they are still left hanging.

A busy run up to Christmas means I'm having to delve into my 'Rainy Day' collection to find some shots I made earlier...... Here's a shot of the gently curving High Street in Oxford lit by some lovely late afternoon sunlight.

From Wikipedia : "The street has been described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the world's great streets". It forms a gentle curve and is the subject of many prints, paintings, photographs, etc. The vista looking west towards Carfax with University College on the left and The Queen's College on the right is an especially popular view. There are many historical buildings on the street, including the University of Oxford buildings and colleges. Locally the street is often known as "The High"."

A view along Daventry High Street on the 15th of February 2021. It had been the first time I had left our village all year, and am surprised I remembered how to drive! Sadly, most of the shops in this scene have closed, and many other buildings are now empty, such as Natwest Bank.

Built around the turn of the Twentieth Century this large Edwardian villa in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran has been built in the reformist style of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Such houses in almost perfect condition are becoming more or a rarity.

Featuring casement windows with Art Nouveau stained glass, the red brick villa uses a large amount of shingling, including a thick column of shingling runs almost the entire length of the villa's middle both above and below the stained glass feature windows in the stairwell, ending in an upside down funnel shape above the double glass front doors.

It is a well proportioned house and would have suited a larger sized Edwardian family of comfortable means who would have lived in Prahran in the early years of the Twentieth Century.

Today, the house has a new lease of life as a community centre run by a local Catholic group.

The Wheatsheaf, High Street, West Wickham, Kent. A pub I have not been into for many years, not since it was 'Ye Olde Anthopologist' It seems to have been runied internally, and decorated in a very bland and boring modern style. I do like a pub with some old traditional character.
