Space-based observation of Earth is an essential source of information for decision-makers in responding to challenges such as global environmental change and security.
Information must be of practical use, arriving quickly and economically, and be accessible to those using it. The EU-led GMES, Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, initiative will consolidate Europe’s capacity to collect and manage environmental and civil security data and information for its citizens.
ESA has been supporting the GMES initiative through the development of precursor services based on space and in situ data, in close cooperation with a large community of operational users, notably for emergency management and land, ocean and atmospheric monitoring.
ESA is also the main partner in charge of coordination of the GMES space component, which includes the development of a new series of Sentinel satellites, and the integration of national and European missions to guarantee continuity of data and services.
