Port Of Aberdeen new South Harbour public open day Sunday 24th September 2023 celebrating the official opening of the new purpose built £420 million marine infrastructure project starting in 2017 after years of planning and officially opened by Princess Anne on Friday 22nd September 2023.

I attended the public open day, it was well organised with over 10,000 locals taking the opportunity to visit and celebrate the completion of this magnificent engineering project, this shot is one that I captured during my time at the event.

The new South Harbour expansion was officially opened on Friday by Princess Anne.

Leaving a plaque in her place, the royal also unveiled a specially designed accropode to commemorate the opening.

The accropodes are concrete blocks designed to resist the action of waves on breakwaters and coastal structures.

Almost 9,000 have been laid in the area to create a calm space in the harbour.

I have followed the harbour’s progress since the first block was laid and have documented activitys with my Nikon D750 and iphone throughout the project , todays visit was a great moment realising the hard work over the years from concept to completion , respect to everyone involved.

ttendees will enjoy a once in a lifetime experience as Dunnottar Quay is transformed with a wide range of activities and highlights:

Port tour : Unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of the UK’s largest maritime infrastructure project.

Ship spotting: get close-up with the impressive vessels that utilise Port of Aberdeen.

Interactive exhibits: visit a diverse range of exhibitions will be on the quayside from organisations working in or related to the port.

Children’s area: keep the little ones entertained with face painting, a glitter bar, and maritime-themed crafts.

Food and refreshments: indulge in delicious local food trucks offering a variety of cuisines.

Photo opportunities: capture memories with stunning views of the port and its surroundings.

The transformational expansion project officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal on Friday 22 September.

Local artists had been invited to submit their designs for a specially painted accropode which was unveiled by The Princess Royal.

Jordan Harkins, Head of Communications, said: “The opening of Aberdeen South Harbour is a momentous milestone in Port of Aberdeen’s almost 900 years of history. Our public open day is a great opportunity to share this historic occasion with thousands of people of all ages. Whether you're a maritime enthusiast, curious about shipping, interested in the port, or looking for family fun, there's something for everyone to enjoy!”

We had a fantastic time during our visit, well organised plenty of marshalls on site to ensure easy parking and exit, great local food stalls on site etc and a choice of two ships to board and visit, a safe environment with lots of photo opportunities and great memories, a perfect afternoon .

ESA’s EarthCARE satellite was launched on 29 May 2024. It has already returned images from its cloud profiling radar and from its broadband radiometer. Now, it has also delivered the first images from its multispectral imager, showcasing various types of clouds and cloud temperatures worldwide. This instrument is set to add valuable context to the data from EarthCARE’s other instruments.

The multispectral imager comprises two cameras: one imaging in the visible, near-infrared and shortwave-infrared (VIS-NIR-SWIR) parts of the of the electromagnetic spectrum and one in the thermal-infrared (TIR). Images captured with these different spectral bands will allow scientists to differentiate between various cloud types, aerosols and Earth’s surface.

This image is from 16 July and shows part of mid-western and southern US. The bottom of the image shows that northern Arkansas is hot and cloud-free. Both images then feature part of a frontal system, with the thermal-infrared image highlighting cold high clouds in blue over southern Missouri. The middle of both images show fewer clouds north of the frontal system. The thermal-infrared image shows low warm clouds at the top of the image.
