Taken a while back on a trip to the remote Scottish North West Highlands. The mountain in the distance, as confirmed by Clive Griffiths below, is Stac Pollaidh.

Little cabin on a big lake. Nestled between the Mesabi Range and Lake Superior, Highland Lake is one of the 10,000 lakes in Minnesota. Highland, named for it being on top of the hill, is the beginning of the descent into Two Harbors and down the treacherous 3% grade to Lake Superior.

Happy New Year from me and this Fluffy Cow!!

I hope everyone enjoys this image!

I was going through some old memory cards & I thought I'd post a couple of oldies. Taken with my first digital DSLR.

With morning mist and cloud clinging to the mountains around Glen Truim, 66421 approaches Dalwhinnie with the 4H47 05:05 Mossend Up Yard to Inverness 'Tesco' intermodal working.

This working usually pauses at Dalwhinnie for some time, to allow for the pathing of passenger trains through the single track section to the north. This gives photographers a chance to 'jump' the train and get another shot further north.

The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region. The first herd-book dates from 1885.It has been exported to several other countries.

Highland Mary looks out over the ferry terminal in Dunoon.

Highland Mary, or Mary Campbell to give her her proper name was born in the Dunoon area in 1763. Mary earned her living by way of domestic service, she moved to Ayrshire and was employed in the Mauchline household of Gavin Hamilton, Robert Burns's patron and friend. She did not stay long in Mauchline, but long enough to attract the attention of and be courted by Robert Burns during a period when he was estranged from Jean Armour.

They decided on emigration to Jamaica and in preparation Mary returned to her home to organise her affairs but unfortunately she died of a fever (typhus) in Greenock (where she is buried).

The lovers were never to meet again following their farewell embraces on the banks of the River Ayr.

A statue at Failford in Ayrshire commemorates the spot of that final farewell.

Burns led a life replete with incident but this surely was one of the most romantic, poignant and tragic of them all.

Finally I have seen a Highland Coo - my favourites.

Sunrise on the cliffs of the Bull Hill rock quarry in the Hudson Highlands.

I enjoyed this particular morning, even with the cold temps and mostly cloudy skies. For me it's about the anticipation of the sun breaking out from behind the clouds, even just for a moment, to illuminate the landscape. Being in position and ready takes a certain level of focus and previsualization, something that I'm far from mastering, but continue to work on each time out.

Another beautiful Highland Cow that we spotted during our drive around Scotland.

We have had a couple of days of light steady rain which has offered relief for the firefighters. Some of the rain has also been reaching the drought affected areas. Much more is needed, but every little bit helps.

There are few animals more emblematic of Scotland, and Celtic culture, than the Highland Stag. I really wanted to see a Scottish red deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus) with a nice set of horns and was always looking out for one. This handsome stag, grazing on some pasture land, was the only one that I got near enough to photograph. Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
