There have been four major fires since the first Britannia pier was built in 1858. One of the fires was apparently started by suffragettes who, in 1914 had not been allowed to hold a meeting there. Britain has a proud history of burning down its piers.
About 12 years ago, after a major revamp of the building, I was hired to inflate hundreds of helium balloons and release them from the top of the Atlantis Tower which you can see towards the bottom of the image. The twin horn on the roof is a foghorn, built in 1891. The light was electrified in 1926 and automated in 1995.
