We came across this great blue heron as we strolled Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida. He was bright enough that the resulting raw photograph had dark shadows behind him. The shadows could have easily been brighten but I liked the way the darkness seemed to highlight the heron.
We will be off the grid for about 3 weeks beginning 6-26-22 . . . see all of you around July 15.

Garza blanca o Garceta grande / Great egret (Ardea alba)
The great egret (Ardea alba) also known as common egret, large egret or great white heron,is a large, widely distributedegret. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, in southern Europe it is rather localized. InNorth America it is more widely distributed, and it is ubiquitous across the Sun Belt of the United States and in the Neotropics. The Old World population is often referred to as the great white egret. This species is sometimes confused with the great white heron of theCaribbean, which is a white morph of the closely related great blue heron (A. hernias).

26th November 2020:
Having had a dreadful night with my hernia (again) I wasn't up to very much today. In the end after Rufus had fallen off the bed, I came and slept on the sofa bed in the main room. I can at least sleep almost upright on it, which is the best position to be in to help. Although trying to sleep sitting up is horrible.
Yes I did say that Rufus had fallen off the bed. Just happy he didn't do any damage to himself as there's not a lot of room for a big dog to fall.
One thing he liked though was that he got half our bed to share with his Dad, but Izzy enjoyed sharing half the sofa bed with me, so it was fair! Plus since she told you she wasn't feeling very well, she hasn't been sick or had any more coughing fits, so hopefully she's better, even if I'm not.

Sam: "Oh dear. She had an awful night again. Her hernia went bonkers and she just couldn't get to sleep.
She came into the main room with us and put the sofa bed up again and tried to sleep on that, but it didn't work like the other night. She was in too much pain.
She took all her extra anti ouch meds and tried to get comfortable and finally dropped off to sleep. When He got up this morning She was still asleep, but instead of leaving Her, He woke Her up, which seems a pity. But there isn't a lot of room when the sofa bed is out, but just enough.
Thankfully, They've found a new GP, as Their lovely one had to close his practise when he got very poorly. But They can't see the new one until next month. Which might be because of Covid, They think.
We've all taken it easy today and She hopes that this will be the last time it plays up, as it hurts."
PS: Sam wants to send [https://www.flickr.com/photos/7786842@N02/] a kiss, but feels a bit embraced about doing so on here. 😚

Hi, aplogies if I haven't got back to you yet - I have been a bit busy preparing for some minor surgery, due on 1st August.
It's just an umbilical hernia, but it's been slowing me down over the last six months - so, time to get it sorted.
It's about a four week recovery period, but I hope to be back on-line before that - I will see how it goes.
Love to you all - keep well my friends - see you in a week or four :-)

I was out of action yesterday and Nurse Minty was helping take care of me.
Last November when all my kidney stone issues started they always do a cat scan to see where the stones are located. At that time they found an incidental finding on me. It seems my appendix was in a femoral hernia. It is called a DeGarrengeots Hernia and needed to be repaired. The plan was to remove the appendix when the hernia was repaired. However because the kidney stone was blocking my ureter that emergency needed to be dealt with first. I was lucky that by the time it was okay for another surgery the appendix had slipped out of hernia. Apparently the appendix being stuck in the hernia can be an emergency too. Yesterday they repaired the hernia but left the appendix in. I was in the hospital at 7:30 AM and home by lunchtime. No time for photos but I did have this little girl bring me a bunch of toys so I took a cell phone photo.
I took a little video of her bringing me her toys and put it up too.

With an impending Hernia operation just days away, and a worrying several weeks of recuperation i decided upon a grand day out.
So 1am found me on the A1 headed for Embleton in Northumberland.
I arrived for sunrise and whilst the scenery and the weather were glorious, i wasn't happy with the lack of cloud. To my mind Castles need a bit of drama. So for an hour or so i pottered around the castle before returning to the beach at Embleton to have a wee nap in the sun.
I woke with a jump when a pooch called Phoebe woke me with a cold nose. Seriously who calls a dog Phoebe? That is on a par with a cat i once knew called Stephen. Incredible.
My eyes struggled to adjust to the light but when they did i was in for another shock... it was 6pm!!
I'd been asleep from 9am!!
It was Saturday, the sun was blazing and the beach was busy with people enjoying the hottest day of the year. To them i was either a hardcore sunbather or drug user- probably the latter as my little chihuahua was tied to my leg. She usually barks at everything too, perhaps i slept through it all.
I did check to see if the good people of Northumberland had tossed me any spare change to aid my plight. Sadly not, i guess speedos don't have pockets.
Gathering up my belongings i headed back towards the castle and yet again it was in vain. Same blistering sun, same bleached skies. Disappointed isn't the word. By now I'd had enough. I was thirsty, hungry and oddly enough still tired, so i headed for the car and home.
Thirty miles from home and i became excited at how the sunset was developing. I suppressed the tiredness and raced to get to a location that i knew.
This is the result.
I went to Northumberland for the day and came back with an image taken just 2 miles from home. That's all i had to say really- but i do like to tell a tale, :)
Yeah. I know what you're thinking.
"Didn't she say that Larry recently had a hernia operation?"
Yes. I did.
When Larry goes back to the doctor in a few days for his check up, it will be a miracle to me if he finds all his stitches still intact!
Larry has not sat down since he got back from his procedure, which btw, is now outpatient.
They do it laproscopically, so it's a very small incision.
Larry said he was expecting a lot of pain, but except for a little discomfort, the first couple of days, he said he felt fine.
The doctor told him he could do anything he wanted, just limit his lifting to 25 lbs. which really surprised me!
I wanted to hit the doctor over the head for telling Larry he could do that, because I knew it was like telling Larry he could do ANYTHING he wanted.
I've spent the last week watching covertly, and rushing in to grab anything I thought was too much for him to handle, but it was pretty much a loosing battle!
When I saw him down in the wood pile, throwing logs in the cart all I could do is shake my head and cross my fingers that it will all be okay!

i finally got my outdated 2005 FUJI PROVIA 100F processed from a trip to ' Paper Mill Lock' here in ESSEX England with my Great Camera Club / FLICKR Mate RAY who also is kind enough to carry my HEAVY PENTAX 6x7 outfit as he does not want me to get another HERNIA ! SMC Takumar 105mm f2.4 and I tried the 'SPOT METERING' off the hull
Weird title but there's a reason. This was taken a while ago now as I haven't been out with my camera for ages, thanks to a particularly nasty little hernia. All fixed now though thanks to the wonderful NHS, doing their finest in the face of adversity. The title to this photo refers to the keyhole method they used in my operation. Raring to get back out with the camera now!
1st May 2018:
Because of my hiatus hernia I can't have fizzy drinks (or alcohol). Not having alcohol doesn't worry me, or fizzy drinks in general. Other than Coca-Cola, which I'd love to have on a hot day with loads of ice in it. Well, any day really, with or without the ice!
I could drink it, but I'd then end up being in pain and it really isn't worth that. But, Graham likes it and from time to time gets himself some, usually only a couple of cans. But, this time he got 4 bottles and I'm being slowly tortured. Don't worry, I'll get over it - I think!

Open Ventral Incisional Hernia Repair with Mesh....
One more thing to check off my Bucket List - hahaha - ouch! :(
Just like this male great blue heron arrived home to its nest, so did we return home last night after a 4-day weekend away. We ventured up to Gainesville and Jacksonville to spend time with my daughter Kelli and her husband Mitchell, as they celebrated Kelli's birthday and Mitchell's MBA graduation from UF. It was beautiful up there ... not too hot, not cold, sunshine, but always, a light breeze.... we even missed the torrential rains that plagued most of Florida. :-)
Looking back at the nest building season in southern Florida, you can always count on some fun activity being offered up by the great blue herons. They are a breed totally in sync when it comes to nest building. The female waits at the nest while she sends out the male for reinforcement sticks ... the perfect size, strength, and material. It's amazing to watch as he takes flight out to search and ultimately returns to the nest with a stick contender, which he offers up to her. She looks it over and accepts it, as they transfer the stick to that perfect location in the nest. Celebratory necking usually follows and maybe even a "quickie". ;-) It fascinating to watch nature at work. So loving, so caring, so representative of a true union.
Will be trying to catch up a bit from being away for a few days. Thanks for stopping by to view. Happy Tuesday!

Getting over a hernia op so cruising around town with just one camera/lens and no jerky movements or mountain climbing permitted so am off the Wellington hills where the birds are.

Dangerous Eddie - who was born with an umbilical hernia - was finally old enough to get it fixed this week.
Here he is back home, neutered, microchipped & with his innards safely tucked back inside.
The hole in his abdominal muscle was very small, only the size of the tip of my little finger, but by 5 months old the amount of guts slipping thru was the size of a satsuma! Every day we popped them back inside & each day - as soon as he so much as breathed - they slid back out.
He seems unfazed by the op, & despite instructions for 'strict rest', he started a tussle with his brother Charlie almost as soon as I opened the carrier :)

Feeling better than I was yesterday, but the hernia hasn't settled completely as yet. Then on top of that it's gone hot. It was bad enough yesterday, but today feels even hotter and the forecast just says hot. ☀️
While I was having my after lunch mug of tea in the garden I noticed this Jackdaw on the chimney pot of the big house. It looked like it was trying to find somewhere cool to rest. If it's that cool up there Jack, move over I'm coming to join you. 😂

25th February 2020:
A very bad night's sleep, my hernia was playing up and I spent a lot of time sitting up on the sofa having taken a paracetamol and my anti ouch medication. Which eventually kicked in.
I took a photo of a tiny bit of blue sky that we had this morning, but while having 40 winks after lunch came up with this idea.
We save Breton lighters, but have also been given some and or found them. Trouble is the bucket is now too small for them all, it's overflowing!
In between downpours I took it all outside for the photo and while there put the cacti onto the ground, one of them had blown over in the wind. :(

This is the attitude of a hero
In Javanese wayang (shadow puppets), the panakawan or panakavan (phanakavhan) are the clown servants of the hero. There are four of them – Semar (also known as Ki Lurah Semar), Petruk, Gareng and Bagong. Semar is the personification of a deity, sometimes said to be the dhanyang or guardian spirit of the island of Java. In Javanese mythology, deities can only manifest themselves as ugly or otherwise unprepossessing humans, and so Semar is always portrayed as short and fat with a pug nose and a dangling hernia.
His three companions are his adopted sons, given to Semar as votaries by their parents. Petruk is portrayed as tall and gangling with a long nose, Gareng as short with a club foot and Bagong as obese.
The panakawan always appear in the second act of a wayang performance – pathet sanga – as servants to the hero of the story regardless of who that hero is.
Similar characters appear in other Indonesian wayang and theatrical traditions, including those of Bali and Sunda, under different names.
The panakawan characters are generally much-loved by audiences who attend wayang plays in Indonesia and their appearance in the plays is usually greeted with laughter and anticipation. However, there are sometimes underlying tensions in Indonesian society between the Hindu elements of Javanese culture which the panakawan characters capture and Islamist religious puritan hardliners who oppose secular and other strains of Javanese culture. In an unusual incident in Purwakarta in West Java in September 2011, for example, four wayang statues (of Gatotkaca, Semar, Bima, and Nakula-Sadewa) were destroyed. [ wikipedia]
=====================================================
The term punakawan comes from pana which means understanding, and friend which means friend. If you are looking for Punakawan figures in the Mahabharata and Ramayana texts, do not be surprised if the Punakawan figures are not there. Punakawan is a puppet character created by a Javanese poet. According to Slamet Muljana, a historian, the Punakawan figure first appeared in the Ghatotkacasraya literary work by Empu Panuluh in the era of the Kediri Kingdom. Kediri or Kadiri (also known as Panjalu) was a Hindu Javanese Kingdom based in East Java from 1042 to around 1222. Despite the lack of archaeological remains, the age of Kediri saw much development in classical literature. Mpu Sedah's Kakawin Bharatayuddha, Mpu Panuluh's Gatotkacasraya, and Mpu Dharmaja's Smaradhana blossomed in this era. The kingdom's capital is believed to have been established in the western part of the Brantas River valley, somewhere near modern Kediri city and surrounding Kediri Regency.
Four figures of the clownman consisted of Semar and his three children, namely Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong. The Punakawan are shown as cheerful groups with their typical humor to melt the atmosphere. Apart from that, Punakawan also has their own character which is certainly worth exploring deeper.
Semar
One of the characters who is always present in the Punakawan, is told as the main character servant of the story Sahadewa from the Pandawa family. Not only as a servant, but Semar also often gives wise advice to the Pandavas. Semar is described as a patient and wise figure. Head and view of Semar facing upwards, depicting human life so that they always remember the Almighty. The cloth used as a shirt by Semar, namely Semar Parangkusumorojo fabric is an embodiment to memayuhayuning banowo or uphold justice and truth on earth. In Javanese spiritual circles, Semar is considered a symbol of the One.
Gareng
In the Javanese puppet story, Nala Gareng is said to be a child of Gandarwa (a genie of a genie) who was adopted by Semar. Pancalparnor is another name for Gareng which means to reject worldly temptations. Gareng has a limp leg, this teaches that always be careful in acting. In one story, Gareng was once a king, but because he was arrogant, he challenged every knight he met and in a fight, they were balanced.
No one wins or loses, but from that fight. Gareng's face, which was originally beautiful, became ugly. Gareng has a short stature and always bends, this indicates caution, even though he has prospered, but must remain vigilant. His eyes were crossed which indicated he did not want to see things that invited evil. His hands are curved, this illustrates not to usurp the rights of others.
Petruk
Petruk is described as a person who likes to joke, either through speech or behavior. He is the second child appointed by Semar. Another name is Kanthong Bolong, which means to be happy. As a clownman, he is a person who can nurture, keep secret problems, listeners, and always bring benefits to others.
In one story, during the construction of the Sapta Arga temple, the kingdom was left empty. Then the panda of the Kalimasada talisman is gone. The talisman was stolen by Mustakaweni. Knowing this, Bambang Irawan - Arjuna's son - along with Petruk tried to grab the talisman. Finally, the charm was successfully captured by Bambang Irawan and deposited with Petruk. But unfortunately Petruk removes the talisman. Luckily the amulet can be found again, then he apologizes to the Pandavas. Through the story, Petruk wants to remind to take into account every behavior and not be easy to believe in anyone. Then he also taught to dare to admit mistakes.
Bagong
Bagong is the third child appointed by Semar. Told, Bagong is a human who emerges from the shadow. One time, Gareng and Petruk asked to find friends by Semar, then Sang Hyang Tunggal said "Know that your friend is your own shadow" instantly, the figure of Bagong emerged from the shadow.
Bagong's figure is described as short, fat, but his eyes and mouth are wide, which depicts his presumptuous yet honest and powerful character. He often does things in a hurry. From Baagong's hasty attitude, it actually teaches to always take into account what is to be done, so it is not like Bagong. This one puppet character also reminded that humans in the world have various characters and behaviors. Not everything is good, so everyone must be able to understand the character of others, be tolerant, and socialize well

February 09 2007 - Thunder was abandoned in front of our home about thirty days ago, the old owner do not care about him anymore. He was starved, skinned with many fleas. He was in a similar condition of my Miauzinha Kitty when we found her. Now he belongs to our family. When we saw him for the first time he ran to our backyard to get and eat some beetles on the grass, he was so starved. We were so sad about that situation and we got very fast a good kitten food for him and he ate a lot. He still little skinned yet but he is gaining weight. He's fur is not in god condition yet but it is going better. He needs to make a surgery because he suffered some kind of trauma and got a big hernia in his belly when he belonged to his old owner. The Doctor said that in his situation he can not have surgery yet because he is too young and we need to wait until six months of age. I am so sad about those people that do not care about their pets, this is too bad.
Because of him and the inspiration of our good friends we decided to make the Kitten Magazine Group.
Thunder now is our beloved kitten and he is very happy here and our cats accepted him as a friend with no problem. This is very nice and we are very happy with him.
Update news, July 04 2007: He got surgery and everything was nice and he his very good now. Thank you all for all your nice comments and invites. Thunder is POL (Purring Out loud) for you.

Today Jackie had some jobs in town so she took Ruby and I walked Amber. Amber had been signed off as fully fit by the vets yesterday after her spaying and hernia removal. So after 10 days of lead walking she was finally free to run. And boy did she run. The weather was really grey and the fine misty rain kept coming and going. So even though conditions were not the best there was really lots to see including Amber going mad.
i won't catch a hernia
