Monastery - Nilova Hermitage. Tver region. Russia.
The monastery dates back to 1528, from the moment of the arrival of the Monk Nile on the island of Stolobny, on Lake Seliger.
A few years later, after the presentation of the Monk Nil of Stolobensky, in 1594, a Blessing was given for the opening of the monastery of the Nilov Pustyn.
In the 18-19 centuries, the Nilova Pustyn Monastery was one of the largest cultural centers in Russia, with a huge library, educational institutions, with its own large production of goods and products.
It was in the Nilova desert that Leonty Magnitsky, a mathematician and teacher, studied under whom, later, the Great Lomonosov studied. Nilova Hermitage was visited by many great people, including Emperor Alexander I and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After the blasphemous looting and partial destruction of the monastery by the Bolsheviks, the buildings were used as a colony for minors, as a prisoner of war camp, as a military hospital, as a camp site. When all the buildings of the monastery fell into disrepair and could no longer be used, without major repairs, by the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, in 1990, the monastery complex was transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the revival of the Nilo-Stolobensky Monastery. Ahead, there are still colossal works to restore the former splendor of the holy monastery. But already now, the Nilo-Stolobenskaya hermitage is the pearl of the Tver diocese. Even in spite of all the destruction that befell from the godless power, this monastery with all this lies before us in all its beauty and grandeur of the genius of architecture, the pious ancestors of the Russian land.
Today, the monastery, thanks to the governor Archimandrite Arkady (Gubanov), is being successfully restored by the brethren and already has its own autonomous production of products, which is in great demand among pilgrims and local residents.
The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

I took this photo on a road trip through Eastern Washington last year. I don't know what this little building was doing on the hill, but it reminded me of a tiny hermitage, the kind of building my dad would have been quite happy in.

If you are going that way, up or down the A9....anyone going that way? .......the Hermitage, just south of Dunkeld makes a worthwhile stop. Better than the House of Bruar with lobster and chips at £36.50 per portion, served in a cardboard box with faux newspaper print inside it.
That is a reasonable conclusion once you see the two huts and the swimming white ducks there even though the recluse is nowhere to be found... The truth being, some people are still left behind economically despite the Chinese government already succeeded in taking 700 million out of poverty in China.

OK, folks, time for another lesson in quirky Croatian history. :-)
The Blaca Hermitage (or Pustinja Blaca in Croatian) is a monastery located on the southern side of the Island of Brac, Croatia. It began in a stone cave (just above the complex, painted with white crosses in the photo) where a group of Croatian monks sought refuge from Turk invaders and pirate raids and a place of solitude to dedicate themselves to God.
In the 16th century, they began the construction of the Blaca monastery by propping up a stone church against the rock wall right beneath them. The monastery was in use for over 400 years and the surrounding area was cultivated by generations of monks during that time. The hermitage included not only a farm, but also a school for local children and for many years an astronomical observatory. The monks produced thousands of gallons of wine, had hundreds of olive trees and pressed the oil. Sheep, oxen and mules and over 200 stone-carved bee-hives were onsite making 3,000 kilos of delicious honey each year.
Father Niko Milicevic was the last monk to reside in the Blaca Hermitage. He was a well-known scholar and astronomer and he passed away in 1963, leaving behind a telescope, a printing press from 1894, a library of 8,000 books, some 400 years old and many written in ancient Glagolitic script, as well as a 400-kilo piano (!). Each item was shipped to Blaca via boats from Italy or Vienna and were carried up the 2.5 km steep mountainside on mules or on foot. And that's exactly how you reach the hermitage today, on foot and up a steep path. Alternatively, the hermitage can be reached on foot down a steep path from the top of the mountain and up the same path on your way back. In either case, it's quite a workout and not too many tourists choose to exert themselves to such an extent. :-)

On the road up to the Sierra bright you find Las Ermitas. There are 13 hermitages that harbored shelter for hermits who retired to them on the outskirts of Cordoba in the area known as Cerro Jail Desert of Our Lady of Bethlehem to meditate and lead a life of austerity.
On way back down from mother in law's in Inverness popped in here just to see what it like, I literally only saw this bit, but loved it. Saw enough to know it looks a great place to spend some time.
I do really like this one.
Just a quick post tonight as it's been a crazy busy day. Another one from my trip to the Hermitage on Friday... This time in Mono!
I'm not appreciate this kind of art. And I do not understand why most of the paintings, especially those "great" trends, like modernism, abstractionism, cubism, art brut and some others - costs big money, but if open your eyes, you will have a feeling, that man who paint that "masterpiece",just 7 years old, and he made that with broken arms.
So, better get some sleep
Scottish borders, a very spooky place : - " Hermitage Castle is a semi-ruined castle in the border region of Scotland. It is under the care of Historic Scotland. The castle has a reputation, both from its history and its appearance, as one of the most sinister and atmospheric castles in Scotland."
On a personal note, I went to this place in 1982 with a friend, we both left feeling depressed, a strange mood had swept over us, never known anything like it before or after, I went last week on my own, didnt go inside as its not open, but didnt feel any ill feelings apart from a touch of trapped wind.
