Hen and Chicks (House Leek - Sempervivum tectorum). On the rockery in my garden

Sempervivum species are evergreen plants and the name literally translates from the Latin as “always living” (“semper” means "always” and “vivus” means "living"). Taken in the garden. Bath, BANES, England, UK

Attractive rosy-pink flowers of the Cobweb Houseleek of Sempervivum arachnoideum variety. Taken in the garden. Bath, BANES, England UK.

Its time for them to bloom, this year it has many arms with cluster of flowers, this is one plant that does okay without help or water,

the simple morning dew it keeps it alive.

Looking Close on Friday theme: no real animal

The newest no real animal to join my family. This Frog sits outside and waters my little flowers. His name is Froggy.

Sempervivum tectorum, the common houseleek, is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae, native to the mountains of southern Europe, cultivated in the whole of Europe for its appearance and a Roman tradition claiming that it protects buildings against lightning strikes.

The name Sempervivum has its origin in the Latin semper ('always') and vivus ('living'), because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth.

The specific epithet tectorum means 'of house roofs', referring to a traditional location for these plants.

The hairs that fringe the leaves can be seen on close inspection.

The pot on the left has been growing hen and chicks for approximately 40 years. I planted them so many years ago when we moved into out first home and have brought them with me when we moved. The pot on the right has been growing hen and chicks for about 17 years when we moved into our second home.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments and favs. All are greatly appreciated.

I have a long story about this flower,

Friend of my 10 years ago from from our antique woodworkers club gave me about 5 individual plants that multiply to about 40,

well in couple years the landscapers destroyed them all,

I found one surviver and stopped them from weeding my flowerbeds, got them back to about 15, this Spring cleanup I saw them scattered in my pebble pond path,

Well these people must do it on purpose cause I actually told one of them don't use your hoe near them,

After they they left I went out and I found them on my path,

Thank you for reading, I am sure many of you have had similar stories to tell:-)

Happy Bokeh Wednesday!

More flowers and more to bloom from this loving plant,

Sorry about having problem viewing the video last night,

I had to post a second one, after that they both worked one the one shows that is deleted, just a glitz on the system.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

This beautiful lotus looking cactus (also known as Hen and Chicks, Aeonium) is very common in tropical countries. I came across this on a way to Arulmigu Kurinji Andavar Temple in Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal is known for its rich flora. This cactus was very green and its leaves are thick as they filled with water and each leaf has serrated edge and a serrated line in its center.

Macro of my hen and chicks plant. It's supposed to be an annual, living for only one year, but it had other ideas and grew this year too!

More fun in the yard. :-) The plant is Hen and Chicks. And the cute guy moved from the birdbath (pic from the other day) to on top of the table. He's been getting around. ;-)

Hen and chicks in my garden.

This may appear to look like an AI created plant, but it is actually a very straightforward image. I was not familiar with this plant which I recently stumbled across. The colors, the graphic nature and the geometrics of it took me by surprise. It also didn't hurt that the ambient lighting which enhanced the natural colors was perfect at the time I shot it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Hen and Chicks plant come back from last year. It's supposed to be an annual around here. Got the cute hedgehog planter at the grocery store!! Life is full of surprises. ;-)

A hardy little perennial from my garden doesn't mind the drought conditions.

unusual planter, these jeans sport a pot of hen and chicks.

reaching for some sunlight and a bit of warmth I suppose

We've had the 3rd wettest July on record for our area. Usually we get only 65mm of rainfall but this year we got 167mm in July.

The garden has been soggy and muddy for most of the summer....and, the MOSQUITOES !!! I haven't been able to get out at all.

This morning it was only +11C and windy...so I thought... time to try. Luckily.. I picked the right morning. Hardly any found me in the 2 hours I spent out there ..in long sleeves and long pants....happily tidying, cutting and digging and planting.

Finally got my last 2 tiny chrysanthemums planted... they've been sitting around for a few weeks now... patiently awaiting their spot in the yard.

This is Sempervivum ... I've had a blurb on here in the past regarding it.... click on the link if you want to know a bit more....
