"You got the jump on that light, Mike!"

The results of the Market Street races are not always accepted.

"Listen, Raul, that light was green when I went, and you know it! Your problem is that Impala just ain't gonna hang with my 'Cuda even if I spot you!"

So, then, the conclusion of the matter is most often reached by a retry.

"Let's go again then! Right now!"

"Let's go!"

1970 -1974

The E-body Barracuda was now "able to shake the stigma of 'economy car'." Three versions were offered: the base Barracuda (BH), the luxury oriented Gran Coupe (BP), and the sport model 'Cuda (BS). The high-performance models were marketed as 'Cuda deriving from the 1969 option. The E-body's engine bay was larger than that of the previous A-body, facilitating the release of Chrysler's 426 cu in (7 L) Hemi for the regular retail market.

Two six-cylinder engines were available — a new 198 cu in (3.2 L) version of the slant-6, and the 225 — as well as six different V8s: the 318, 340, 383 (290 hp (220 kW), 2-barrel and 330 hp (250 kW) Super Commando in Barracuda & Gran Coupe, 330 hp (250 kW) — some say 335 hp (250 kW) — as the 'Cuda model's base motor) 440 4-barrel, 440 6-barrel, and the 426 Hemi. The 440- and Hemi-equipped cars received upgraded suspension components and structural reinforcements to help transfer the power to the road.

Other Barracuda options included decal sets, hood modifications, and some unusual "high impact" colors such as "Vitamin C", "In-Violet", and "Moulin Rouge".

Swede Savage and Dan Gurney raced identical factory-sponsored AAR (All American Racers) 'Cudas in the 1970 Trans-Am Series. The cars qualified for three pole positions but did not win any Trans-Am races; the highest finish was 2nd at Road America.

A street version of the AAR 'Cuda was produced, powered by the 340 cu in (5.6 L) "Six Pack" (three two-barrel carburetors) engine.

The Barracuda was changed slightly for 1971, with a new grille and taillights, seat, and trim differences. This would be the only year that the Barracuda would have four headlights, and also the only year of the fender "gills" on the 'Cuda model.

The 1971 Barracuda engine options would remain the same as that of the 1970 model, except the 4-barrel carbureted 440 engine was not available; all 440-powered Barracudas had a six-barrel carburetor setup instead. The 426 Hemi remained available, and the 1971 HemiCuda convertible is now considered one of the most valuable collectible muscle cars. Only eleven were built, seven of which were sold domestically, and examples of these cars have sold for US$2 million.

According to the current owner, the previous owner owned a real black '71 Hemi-'Cuda convertible, and had this built so he'd have one that wasn't too valuable to risk driving. Endless Summer Cruisin', Ocean City, MD, October 7, 2021.

A 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda on the auction blocks at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale Arizona.

As far as I can tell this one is totally stock including the funny little wheels and tires.

Hard to believe this 1970 Plymouth now sells for more then a new RV but that's exactly what they do.

I've seen many original matching number Hemi Cuda hard tops in perfect condition sell now for a starting price of about $200,000.

And if you have an even rarer stock Hemi Cuda Convertible, well... a 71 sold at Barrett-Jackson for an even $2 million!

And how rare were the Hemi Cuda Convertibles? In 1970 they made only 14 and in 1971 only 11. Yes there were several hundred 1970 Hemi Cuda hard tops 652 to be exact but the convertible model with Hemi so rare you could have missed it.

What's it like to ride in this beast? I used to own a 1973 340 Dodge Challenger and while it was fun to drive and made great sounds it's a baby engine when comparing the entertainment levels. I've had the pleasure of riding in a hard top Hemi Cuda and can tell you the handling is rough at best and it's not real fast off the line by today's standard due to a lack of traction (too little weight on the little by today's standards polyglass tires) . But, when you smash the go pedal to the floor and all eight barrels of the two four barrel carburetors under that shaker hood open up all is forgiven! You can't really describe the sounds other then it reminds you of a race engine. Starting out with a deep hair raising moan the sound quickly changes to a loud wail then a shriek! Children will cry and run for their mommies and older people's jaws will drop. It's something best done in a closed environment like a race track as this baby will really get a lot of attention.

I'm car crazy, and here I'm about 16 yrs old standing next to the popular Hot Wheels Snake II Funny Car driven by world renowned Don Prudhomme. Don was sitting behind the wheel in this photo of his fibreglass Plymouth Cuda.

Previously Don raced Slingshot Dragsters and later drove Rear Engine Dragsters. Besides having the Hot Wheels label on his racing vehicles, Don was also sponsored by the names of, ARMY, "SKOAL BANDIT", PEPSI, Miller, Copenhagen, U.S. Tobacco, and more.

Now retired from drag racing, Prudhomme is team owner of Snake Racing.

(It's said Big Daddy Don Garlits was inventor of the Rear Engine Dragster)
