Hellsing (ヘルシング Herushingu?) es una serie de manga escrita e ilustrada por Kōta Hirano que posteriormente tuvo su versión anime producida por Gonzo. Su primera edición fue en Young King OURs en 1997 y finalizó en 2008. Los capítulos individuales han sido publicados en diez volúmenes tankōbon por Shōnen Gahōsha en octubre de 2008. El manga relata los esfuerzos de los misteriosos y secretos Caballeros Protestantes Reales, "Hellsing", y sus combates contra vampiros, ghouls y otros enemigos sobrenaturales que amenazan al reino de Gran Bretaña.

sinopsis:Se centra alrededor de la Orden de Caballeros Protestantes Reales, que son los últimos miembros descendientes de Abraham Van Hellsing. Su misión es la de proteger a la reina y las fronteras del país de toda amenaza sobrenatural. La organización está liderada por Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, que heredó su responsabilidad como directora después de la muerte de su padre, cuando tenía 12 años. Bajo su mandato están Walter C. Dornez, y Alucard, un poderoso vampiro que fue capturado por la familia hace cien años. Más tarde se une también la ex-policía Seras Victoria, que tras ser mordida por Alucard se convierte en soldado de Hellsing.1

Después de un ataque sobre la oficina central de Hellsing por parte de los hermanos Valentine,2 donde las tropas son totalmente masacradas, Sir Integra contrata al grupo de mercenarios Wild Geese para sustituir a los hombres perdidos en la batalla. El líder del grupo es el capitán Pip Bernadotte, un francés mujeriego. Durante la serie los personajes cometen todo tipo de atrocidades, como violación, mutilación, tortura o canibalismo.

There are 10 vol. in total. I bought 1 to 4. I really like reading manga and watching anime/OVAs.

That's the serie I'm watching, (yesterday I watched Hellsing Ultimate OVA 10), so the next step is to watch Hellsing The Dawn and Hellsing (anime).

I know that I should have read the manga first instead OVAs, but it's late :P

After defeating Dracula in the 19th Century, Abraham van Helsing founded the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, whose purpose was to hunt down and destroy supernaturals that might threaten the British Empire--specifically, vampires. By the late 20th Century, the group has simply become known as the Hellsing Order, led by Sir Integra Hellsing and assisted by no less than Dracula himself, who swore fealty to the Helsing family and took the name Alucard. The Hellsing Order finds itself facing a resurgent Nazi cult named Millennium, who intends to kill Alucard...and wipe out London in the process. Swept up in the war is Seras Victoria, a former policewoman who Alucard made into a vampire to save her life.

Kouta Hirano came up with the idea of Hellsing in 1997, as he wanted to update the Dracula mythos to modern times, and throw in a lot of guns. (Hirano is what the Japanese would call a "gun otaku"--the identically named Kouta Hirano in Highschool of the Dead is based directly on him.) Hirano had some minor sucess before Hellsing, but this proved to be his most popular offering by far. Hellsing ran until 2008, an impressive run, and Hirano would go on to write prequels and spinoffs as well. It was adapted into two anime series, Hellsing (2001) and Hellsing Ultimate (2006). It remains a very popular series.

I've been somewhat of a fan of Hellsing--I've watched the original anime, and came away liking the overall idea more than the series itself. (I also have a soft spot for Team Fourstar's hilarious "Hellsing Abridged.") I do like the characters quite a bit, however, and I've taken a lot of cosplay pics of them. These three were at ACen 2011.

Appearances are somewhat decieving here--all three cosplayers are female. Seras is the most obviously so; she wears the yellow uniform she wears later in the series, showing her move away from her earlier persona as a policewoman. Despite the title of "Sir," Integra Hellsing is also a woman, though because of the sexism she often faces from the British government, Integra adopted a more masculine style of dress. Alucard is male in the series, but in flashbacks to World War II, he was a she--it is implied that a being as powerful as Alucard can freely switch genders at will, so having a female Alucard doesn't even count as crossplaying! The cosplayer is giving me an appropriately demented pose for Alucard.

Despite the crazy and very serious expressions, these three were actually a lot of fun to meet.

Now if this were, say, Halloween, I'd automatically assume this to be a pimp and one of his girls, but it being Dragon*Con, I'm sure it is something a lot less mundane. The design on his glove makes me think there is something more to this costume than a simple pimp.
