Sat down and watched the new Hellraiser tonight (god, I wish they’d stop naming these sequel/quasi remakes/reimagining’s the same title)….
I enjoyed it a good deal. Would I watch it again the way I watch the original Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2? Not likely. I love those first two films.
But this was a very well made installment. All the actors were good, their characters weren’t annoying, the visuals were horrific and beautiful, and the score was strong. The movie is done with care and respect for the original material. This isn’t a gratuitous gore fest. This is an art house horror film. If you like Hellraiser, I think it’s worth checking out.
My negatives of the movie are that for one, it’s about 30 minutes too long. I also do not like the Cenobite designs at all (which is kind of a big deal). They’re not nearly as grotesque and scary as the original. And the new Pinhead looks more space alien than anything. And my last critique is that it’s sorely missing the whole skinless character element, like Uncle Frank. I love that whole plot line where they lure in victims to heal themselves. But those negatives aside, for a modern horror “sequel”, it’s good.
Oh, and the main character looks EXACTLY like Pamela Adlon. Which all made sense when I IMDb’d her to find she was her daughter. Even sounds like her. Little Bobby Hill.
