The roofless, hexagonal mausoleum was built by Sir Francis Dashwood in 1763 to house the remains of the Hell Fire Club members, a group of well connected libertines and gamblers. Members included government ministers as well as John Wilkes, the popular champion of individual liberty.

A closer look at the Golden Ball, added when Sir Francis Dashwood rebuilt the medieval St. Lawrences Church. It is covered with gold leaf and provided members of the Hell Fire Club with an exclusive club house. The ball is hollow and contains a circular bench that seats ten people.

It was closed to the public for safety reasons some years ago

Really thankful that Pandora edited this for me. <3

...Are you ready for the most metal concert in the history of the world?"

Built as a hunting lodge in 1725, this building at the summit of Montpelier Hill (1257 feet) became notorious as the meeting place for the Hell Fire Club, from which it now takes it name.

Black masses, demonic worship and occult practices took place here and the superstitions and folk tales from those days are still told. Not a place to linger after dark.

The Palladian house was built in the early part of the 18th Century by Sir Francis Dashwood the Premier Baronet of Great Britain.

The Dashwood family still live in the mansion, it is now the home of Sir Edward Dashwood Bt., the 12th Premier Baronet of Great Britain

The 11th Baronet, Sir Francis Dashwood, devoted much of his life to restoring West Wycombe house and grounds to the glory of its original design.

Haha, there you go, the grand unveiling. If you guessed 1 you were right. The logo was meant to go on the wall but it didn't match the furniture at all.

West Wycombe Park, Buckinghamshire

The Pedestal (1752) at the eastern end of West Wycombe is an odd signpost which does not name the three towns to which the roads lead (Oxford, Aylesbury and London?) and the Dashwood Mausoleum is seen in the distance.

Harry Leland shows Wolverine what it's like to suddenly become very, very heavy

Happy 2010 everyone! I have re-surfaced after a long absence from flickr and all things photo related (was working hard for year end :)).

New Years Eve caught us all by surprise with sprinkle of the white stuff right at midnight and it's been complete chaos since! The roads leading to our place are one long ice strip so we have been ibernating since our last outing where I managed to capture the image above.

It was taken at the Hell FIre Club, a well known haunted site...what best way to start the year! LOL.

Where the wild things are was the cutest movie I saw over Christmas and if I may say so, it had absolutely fantastic lighting in it! Go see it, if you're 5 or 50 - you've reasons to go see it.

Medmenham Abbey, on the banks of the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, was once known for being the venue for The Hellfire Club, for Rakes. Dissolution, in more ways than one.

A Cistercian abbey was founded in Medmenham in the 12th century under the ownership of Woburn Abbey, though it was not officially recognised by royal charter until 1200. It was dedicated to St. Mary but closed in 1536.

In 1547, at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the abbey was seized and given to the Moore family and then sold privately to the Duffields. It was while in the possession of the Duffields that the abbey became infamous as the location of The Hellfire Club, headed by Sir Francis Dashwood, formerly called the Monks of Medmenham who used it for "obscene parodies of religious rites" according to one source, between the mid 1700s and 1774, though the club was already in disrepute by 1762. During that era, it was renovated to resemble a Gothic building. Eventually, the meetings were moved out of the abbey.

Dashwood had leased the ruins of the abbey from the Duffield family. After the Club was defunct (by 1763), the property was sold to the Chief Justice of Chester. In 1898 the building was modified, and since then it has no longer resembled an abbey. Subsequent renovations were completed in the 20th century.

Today the building is a private residence and is not open to the public. The property has been Grade II listed since 1955.

Animazement 2012, Raleigh, NC

Normally I need no excuse or have any hesitation for photographing Rachel in anything. But I confess to having a serious weakness for when she does any variation of the Marvel Comics Emma Frost, aka "The White Queen." :)

The cataloguer when writing the title for this shot mentions a tram but though I have searched, briefly, on the super zoomable facility I can find no tram. Is she/he mistaking the Hellfire Club with a tram up there on the top of the hill?
