Lawrence and Dorothy Heller built a legacy of arts and humanities in the Eagle Rock area of Colorado Springs in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Lawrence (Larry) was an artist well-known for his paintings, sculptures, and illustrations that depicted life in the American West. In 1996, Dorothy (Dot), a former officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department, donated her home – which included the house, a gallery, a studio, and a large tract of land - to the UCCS campus with the condition that the property serve as a center for continuing education on the arts and humanities. The display showcases a small example of their lives.

"I was in Nashville, Tennesee last year. After the show I went to a Waffle House. I'm not proud of it, I was hungry. And I'm alone, I'm eating and I'm reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me: 'Hey, whatcha readin' for?' Isn't that the weirdest fuckin' question you've ever heard? Not what am I reading, but what am I reading FOR? Well, godammit, ya stumped me! Why do I read? Well . . . hmmm . . . I dunno . . . I guess I read for a lot of reasons and the main one is so I don't end up being a fuckin' waffle waitress"
Heat and flames are elementary things in our everyday life's. We need flames to move our car, to heat our lunch to burn the waste that we are producing and so on.
Heat and flames are a symbol of love, but so they are for hell. Hmmm...
