This is a pool directly to the side of the active vents. Just off of the left edge is another fumarole vent. Plants grow right up to the edge of the Hell.
This was done with a crappy zoom lens so its not as crisp as i wished but the orange tinge the camera picked up maybe from the oil rigs lights that was just out of the shot, still gives it a cool effect
When separated from context, some things take on a serious context on their own. The fire on the black background is exactly how I captured it and for me it symbolizes the bowls of hell and superstition surrounding hell itself. This metaphor works in a way that is obvious but still effective, as it is quite a uncomfortable image to look at and it does raise these questions when it is looked at. Another thing that was interesting was that when I look at it, because fire isn't a static form, when I captured it as such my mind started to create forms that were not actually there, like faces and lifeforms. I know we do the same thing with clouds, so that seems like a strong connection to me.
A view of the Bumpass Hell geothermal area from the trail leading down to it. This is the most well known of the park's geothermal features. In fact, it is the largest geothermal area in the US outside of Yellowstone.
It is named after Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, an explorer who lived in the area in the 1860's. One day, he was showing some people the area when his leg fell through the muddy crust covering a mud pot, severely burning his leg. The hell part of the name should be obvious.
