At the north end of Grand Rapids, about 3 miles from the downtown, a number of pieces of heavy equipment have been staged at the end of the week so that come Monday morning the work of lifting off curb, gutter, and road surface can begin along the lines that surveyors marked cutting lines and the crews pre-cut some of the critical spots ahead of time.
Most of the water and sewer and electric lines were laid in this vicinity in the 1910s and 1920s. Natural gas came later, with telephone wires and then cable wires and finally Internet wires all coming later. Compared to the machinery in use at the time the initial basic public works infrastructure was established, these sleek yellow pieces of equipment have come a long way in terms of operator fine control, selection of specialty blades and buckets to attach, and the creature comforts to sustain the operator(s) long days in all kinds of weather. To see the crew of 15 or 20 in action is truly impressive: dump trucks line-up in rotation so that one is being filled, one is on stand-by to take the placed of the one filled, another is enroute to take the stand-by truck's place, and so on.
