Things are almost complete for my show in October, so I thought I'd post the invite and artist statement. I will upload photos of the actual work on the weekend.

About the show:

My typical way of approaching photography is to follow an impulse and build upon the emerging themes. This series evolved from experiments shooting long exposures of trees with a Holga camera around Vancouver and in the Okanagan over the winter of 2006. Eventually I moved beyond long exposures but decided to stick with the subject of trees. They were very much on my mind because of storm damage throughout the GVRD over the winter. It led me to take more notice of the trees we share our cityspace with, and to discover variety in how to photograph them.

I have been working with heat transfer printing for about five years, using materials such as water colour paper, cloth, and wood. Metal is a favorite choice for printing, specifically for the luminescence quality created in the printed images when light reflects upon the material. I chose to create these works in two and four panels due to limitations in the size of heat transfer paper and the heat press itself. Each panel has been individually hand-printed on aluminum and assembled into the finished product by me, in order to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

About the artist:

Rachael Ashe has been living in Vancouver for three and a half years, with a small yellow bird named Yuuki. She mostly shoots with film, likes to play with toy cameras, and is slowly working her way towards pursuing her art full-time. This show at Radha Yoga and Eatery represents her first large scale solo show, and she hopes it will be the first of many.

I used the heatpress to recreate an image which I had made, i printed it onto a mesh which did'nt work very well.

Put my drawing (photocopied) through the heat press with some plastic then worked on it on photoshop :)

It's a red letter day when you go to the tip to offload your household crap and find two heat presses! They were pretty rough when I picked them up but after a bit of white spirt and WD40 it all looks good. I've already burnt myself...

So the question is, what are they good for? I've only every used one once before for t-shirt printing and we screen printed the glue on and then melted the flock on top. I no longer have access to screen printing equipment so any one got any DIY ideas? Can you get self adhesive vinyls, flock or foils? Are they any good? How do you work out the timings and temperatures. & how likely am I to burn my knuckles off?

Any advice, thoughts, links you might have would be greatly appreciated...

Maybe this is a long shot but I'm hoping someone in Vancouver can help me find the part on the left side of this diptych. (Here it is larger.)

It's called a "Piggyback quick connect" and I've been trying to locate somewhere I can buy a version of it rated for high heat to repair a heat press. I've tried many places already, and though this version of the part is very common the type rated for high heat is not.

If you know of any specialty electronics stores I could try or even an electrician who could advise me on where to find it, please leave a comment or flickr mail me.

I'm really frustrated with trying to find this part, hence the crazy eyes. I need to repair the heatpress in order to begin work on a project, and looking for one tiny part seems to be eating up too much time.

Originally created as a sample in 2006 for a project entitles 'Language of the Future' (there is some other stuff from that project further back in my photostream if you want to see more!)

I reworked it by trimming the piece down, adding on the green and pink sequins and then finally stitching it onto some purple fabric ready for mounting onto stretchers.

Wool blanket fabric, with heat transfer printing (magenta dysperse dye), heatpress embossing, devore, applique, free machine embroidery, hand stitching and sequins.
