My old ones as it happens, I had to get new ones as I broke one side, but have since fixed that, mostly with headshrink tubing, and added one of those chains. I'll explore the Librarian look anothet time, as I think a pussy bow blouse and a line or maybe pencil skirt would suit that better. But for now I quite the feeling of being able to have them around my neck.

So I’ve been doing a bit of head shrinking lately. I really like this Hunger Games Peeta sculpt but I want him on a shorter body. So I’m trying to get him to work with this EAH body and I thought head shrinking him would solve the bobble headed issue but he still looks off somehow. His head is rock hard si I guess he’s shrunk down as much as he could.

And I bought another skateboarding MTM a few days ago to upgrade my Fashionista Style so Sweet head and I figured I should headshrink one of them to make it collector sized. It’s still soft so I’m hoping it shrinks down further.

Head Shrinking - The Reasons

The best-known head trophies of Amazonia are those prepared by the Jivaro (Shuar) Indians of Ecuador. The Jivaro waged war chiefly as revenge against their enemies, mainly the Achuara. Aparty of up to 30 or 40 warrior might go on a war raid to kill enemies and take their heads.

The Jivara believe that a person has three souls. One, the avenging soul, comes into being at the moment of violent death, and leaves the body through the mouth. Shrinking a slain anemy's head keeps the soul inside, so that he cannet take revenge on the killer of his family. A Shrunken head is also obvious proof of having killed an enemy.Through ceremonies following head shrinking, the members of the community can use the power of the muisak (soul).

Head Shrinking - Process

After a succesfull raid, the warriors severed enemy heads and quickly retreated to a prearranged spot by a river where they had left clay pots needed for shrinking the heads. The head was slit from neck to crown, the skin peeled off and the skull thrown in the river. The skin was boiled inplain water to shrink it, then the flesh was removed and the skin sewn up the back. Rolling first hot stones and then hot sand inside the head removed any remaining flesh and helped shrink it further. To prvent the avenging soul from escaping the lips were pierced with three palm wood pins and tied together with palm fiber. Blackening the skin with powdered charcoal prevented the muisak soul from seeing out.

Okay, here's my Raquelle head after I had soaked it in acetone nail polish remover. I don't think it has shrunk as well as Artsy's. Also, she has lost her yellow/ pink hues from her skintone. I now have to find her a new body which matches! I think I need to put some gloss on her lips too as her face has gone very matt now. (I also removed the pink streaks from her hair - the acetone had no effect on that!) I think facially she looks kind of like Amanda from Ugly Betty!

I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this doll yet. After a head shrinking in 100% acetone she looks a little like Poppy Parker. Maybe a little anyway?

So my latest Amazon order came in which was Batman when he briefly dipped below $20, and so I added this Fashionista cuz she was on sale as an add-on item. I also got my Roxy doll in the mail.

Even though I paid $7 for this Fashionista I’m still…. disappointed by her. Her eyebrow has a slight smudge, her lipstick and blush look plain wrong, and her hair is soooo thinly rooted. Also weirdly enough her sclera and eyelashes are a matte finish, but her irises and eyeshadow is super glossy so it’s really inconsistent. I want to put her on a jointed body but…. she definitely needs a headshrinking to take care of the rooting problem, her weird sculpt quirks and proportions. I’m definitely redoing that weird lip paint.

Roxy is perfection but she definitely needs her hair washed out and redone to be more poofy.

12 dancing princesses Ashlyn fashion fever Shannen & before size and after 12 hours headshrink!

I just had to photograph Ella with her new haircut. My toe still hurts while walking, but it is better than it was.

I've loved the hasbro sculpt from the start, I only had the feeling that something was wrong.

No matter what I did, her hair just didn't style the way I wanted it to. I blamed it on the hair I used to reroot her.

To be honest if I wouldn't be so afraid I wouldn't be able to repaint her just like this again, I would have given her new hair.

Because I was unable to do that, I gave her a haircut instead.

At first just a little bit and I loved her then, but in the morning I still felt it wasn't right yet.

So I cut it again a bit shorter. I like it a lot better now it is above her shoulders.

This week I'm sewing a lot of new clothes, like this outfit.

Next week I believe I'm going to knot a lot of hair plugs and buy myself a new Hasbro Punzie.

While preparing the plugs I can give the headshrinking another try and make a sister for Ella. Guess I would not have to be so afraid then about something happening to her. I still have a punzie trauma from last year, lol!

Who Shrunk that Head?

For years, the most popular exhibits at the Behringer-Crawford Museum in Covington, Kentucky, were its two-headed calf and shrunken head. In 1991, however, the two were removed and put in closet somewhere. Not much thought was given to them until recently, when the museum began logging the questions that its visitors had asked of its staff. What the museum found was not what it had expected. The most frequently asked question was "Where is the two-headed calf?" The second was, "Where is the shrunken head?"

Chastened, the Behringer-Crawford Museum has brought back the freak and the head -- as well as a miniature English terrier (stuffed and officially extinct), a hairball taken from the stomach of a cow, and a set of little animal figurines made of entrails -- as centerpieces of its "Hey Mummy, Who Shrunk that Head?" exhibit.

A shrunken head is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. Headhunting has occurred in many regions of the world. But the practice of headshrinking has only been documented in the northwestern region of the Amazon rain forest, and the only tribes known to have shrunken human heads are of the Jivaroan tribes.

The process of creating a shrunken head begins with removing the skull from the head. An incision is made on the back of the neck and all the skin and flesh is removed from the cranium. Red seeds are placed underneath the eyelids and the eyelids are sewn shut. The mouth is held together with three palm pins. Fat from the flesh of the head is removed. It is here that a wooden ball is placed in order to keep the form. The flesh is then boiled in water that has been saturated with a number of herbs containing tannins. The head is then dried with hot rocks and sand, while molding it to retain its human features. The skin is then rubbed down with charcoal ash. Decorative beads are added to the head.

In the head shrinking tradition, it is believed that coating the skin in ash keeps the muisak, or avenging soul, from seeping out.

The practice of preparing shrunken heads originally had religious significance; shrinking the head of an enemy was believed to harness the spirit of that enemy and compel him to serve the shrinker. It was said to prevent the soul from avenging his death.

The owner of the trophy did not keep it for long. Many heads were later used in religious ceremonies and feasts that celebrated the victories of the tribe.

When westerners created an economic demand for shrunken heads there was a sharp increase in the rate of killings in an effort to supply collectors and tourists.

The terms headhunting and headhunting parties come from this practice. Guns were usually what the Shuar acquired in exchange for their shrunken heads, the rate being one gun per head. But weapons were not the only items exchanged; during the 1930s, when heads were freely exchanged, a person could buy a shrunken head for about twenty-five dollars. A stop was put to this when the Peruvian and Ecuadorian governments worked together to outlaw the traffic in heads.

Also encouraged by this trade, as early as the 1870s people in Colombia and Panama unconnected to the Jívaros began to make counterfeit tsantsas. They used corpses from morgues, or the heads of monkeys or sloths. Some even used goatskin. Kate Duncan wrote in 2001 that "It has been estimated that about 80 percent of the tsantsas in private and museum hands are fraudulent," including almost all that are female or which include an entire torso rather than just a head.

Thor Heyerdahl recounts in Kon-Tiki (1947) the various problems of getting into the Jívaro (Shuar) area in Ecuador to get balsa wood for his expedition raft. Local people would not guide his team into the jungle for fear of being killed and their heads shrunk.

Since the 1940s, it has been illegal to import shrunken heads into the United States. In 1999, the National Museum of the American Indian repatriated the authentic shrunken heads in its collection to Ecuador. Most other countries have also banned the trade.

Currently, replica shrunken heads are manufactured as curios for the tourist trade. These are made from leather and animal hides formed to resemble the originals.

How to Prepare a Shrunken-Head

The Jivaros are the only tribe known to have successfully revolted against the Spanish Empire and to have been able to thwart all subsequent attempts by the Spaniards to conquer them. They have withstood armies of gold-seeking Incas and defied the brovado of the early conquistadors. The Jivaro Indians are known to be an intensely warlike group, tremendously protective of their freedom and unwilling to subordinate themselves to other authorities.

The Jivaro Indians have a reputation for their fierceness which distinguishes them from their counterparts based on the savageness directed toward their enemies. Early Spanish chronicles relate that in the year 1599, the Jivaros banded together and killed 25,000 white people in raids on two settlements. In particular, the massacre of the Logrono stands out as particularly ruthless. The attack was instigated over the natives being taxed in their gold-trade. After uncovering the unscrupulous practices of the visiting governor, molten gold was later poured down his throat until his bowels burst. Following his execution, the remaining Spaniards were killed along with the older women and children. The younger useful women were taken as prisoners to join the clan. The settlement itself was raided and burned to the ground. From this point onward, the Jivaro Indians remained unconquered despite the fact that they inhabited one of the richest regions in South America for gold deposits. The Jivaro's fierce fighting reputation and head-shrinking practice continued to discourage outsiders from entering their territories.

Canary wharf head shrink

So yeah you can probably tell I was at the hardware store yesterday because I picked up some paint as well as a litre of acetone. I've always wanted a Lagoona with a more proportional head so I got around to soaking her in acetone yesterday. She didn't really change size yesterday so she's been soaked twice and there's definite change now. Her hair has torn at the temples but her head is mostly intact so when her head shrinks fully I'll glue it back in place.

Her head is still soft and feels a bit delicate so I assume it;s still shrinking heh.

This is a shrunken head I made by carving a Granny Smith apple with a knife, and letting it sit out for a week. Now what do I do with it? The eyes are dark because I put the corners of a "chocolate" candy corn in for eyes. That dissolved, leaving discolored eye sockets. Kind of disturbing, but effective. His white candy corn tip teeth just disappeared.

My 22 month old son named him "Funny Guy".

Its creation was inspired when I re-discovered this ad here on flickr:

Lila's head is popped into a jar of pure acetone to try and shrink it.

Dang. Only a 4% change in size. Maybe I didn't soak her long enough? Also, even though I was careful, the head STILL ripped where the holes for the hair were.

Heads that are hard with globs of thick glue inside should not be fast shrunk in 100% acetone. You run the risk of the scalp separating from the face or the shape of the head warping. Frankie Stein heads tend to have close rooting anyway and I've never been able to successfully fast shrink one without it breaking, but this is one of my first attempts and you can see all that glue...
