Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519)
Head of a young girl called La Scapigliata (The lady of the dishevelled hair), first decade of the 16th century
Shadow land, green amber and white lead on panel, 24.6 cm x 21 cm - Galleria Nazionale Parma
The painting is called La Scapigliata because of the wind that seems to inflate the hair that frame the girl's head with a serpentine shape, creating a very special effect of movement in the hairstyle.
An enigmatic female figure, a singular and unique image of Leonardo da Vinci, always known as La Scapigliata, which fascinates us for the exquisite and absolutely modern game between the carefully painted beauty of the ambiguously smiling reclined face and the unfinished design of the hair that falls on the shoulder from the line just sketched.
The work realized on a poplar tablet in the ground of shade, amber green and white lead, unicum in the body of the Master, is identified as sketch or sketches as performed with a technique close to that of sketch and drawing, where unfinished spaces they combine with a skilful and refined use of lights and shadows that, with a complex play of nuances, create a sense of grace and perfection, reaching the typical finish of painting.
The amount of drawings, sketches and notes left by Leonardo Da Vinci is impressive, about 40,000 sheets and it is thought that at least two thirds have been lost.
Artist: Elizabeth Nourse
b. 1859, Mount Healthy, OH; d. 1938, Paris, France
This is one of several canvases depicting African American girls the artist probably painted in Cincinnati around 1882, just after her graduation from the School of Design. Nourse excelled at such head studies, a requirement of her education. Here, she beautifully suggests the texture of the dress and the character of the child who seems mature beyond her years.

Paula Modersohn-Becker, Dresden 1876 - Worpswede 1907
