This illustration is from a retelling of Norse mythology in the 1930 edition of Annie Keary's The Heroes of Asgard (1857) illustrated by Charles E. Brock. The book is divided into nine stories beginning with the Creation Myth and ending with Ragnarök. The stories are further divided into parts which have illustrated headers and illustrated capital letters. This header depicts This header illustration in Story VII: "The Binding of Fenrir" for Part III: “Honour“ depicts Þórr, Óðinn and Fenrir. Óðinn is holding the chain made by the dwarves, and is about to bind Fenrir with it.
Editor's Note: The third edition of The Heroes of Asgard was published in 1930 as The Heroes of Asgard: Tales from Scandinavian Mythology and was illustrated by Charles E. Brock (1870 – 1938). This is the edition that most readers are familiar with today. The Brock edition contains eighty-five illustrations with sixteen colour plates. The text of the tales remained the same, but the scholarly introduction and the notes of the second edition were eliminated. The Brock edition was republished in 2012, by Dover Publications as Tales of the Norse Warrior Gods: The Heroes of Asgard, but not all of the plates are in colour and several were relocated, i,e., to the front cover and inside the covers. Unfortunately, without the framing conversations from the first edition or the academic apparatus from the second edition, naive readers of the third edition sometimes believe that the retellings represent the cultural and religious beliefs of Old Norse pagans. Fédération Mondiale du Cirque to Host
Worldwide Digital Circus Photo Competition
Monte-Carlo, Monaco – A worldwide circus digital photo competition was announced today by the Fédération Mondiale du Cirque, an international organization of circus-related associations based in Monaco. The four-month competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers, plus a special youth division for photographers under the age of 18.
“The circus is a universal performance art that speaks to the heart and spans generations, cultural barriers and national borders,” said Laura van der Meer, Executive Director of the Federation Mondiale du Cirque. “It is also a highly visual performance art that readily lends itself to photography. Our contest will capture the ‘best of the best’ in circus photography worldwide.”
The online contest begins today and ends 31 October 2009. Amateur and professional contestants may enter one digital circus-related photo in each of four categories: circus performance, circus life, performing animals and youth circus. Contestants under 18 years of age may enter up to two photographs without category specification in either the 12 years and under or 13-to-18-year-old class.
An international jury of renowned circus historians, chaired by the Federation’s Honorary President H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco, will award Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in each category, plus select two finalists from the youth division classes and one “best of show” photograph. The winning photographs will be featured in a 2010 calendar.
Digital photo entries must be submitted in jpeg format to laura@circusfederation.org. All entries must be received by 31 October 2009 to be considered for competition. Contestants must agree to allow their entries to be reproduced, displayed online and/or exhibited publicly. Winning entries become the sole property of the Fédération Mondiale du Cirque.
