West Cork, Ireland

Irland / Ireland

English:

The Beara Peninsula is one of the top travel destinations in Ireland. What many do not know: There is a highlight on the peninsula that should not be missed: The Healy Pass. Healy Pass connects Lauragh on the north side of the Beara Peninsula with Adrigole on the south side. The 12-kilometer pass road (R574) is considered one of the most beautiful routes on the Irish island. The pass route leads in steep serpentines up into a rough and lonely landscape.

Following the Denali Star out of Healy Canyon, a work train heads south under Highway 3 on their way to Crown Point south of Anchorage. The train was needed for emergency repairs after a glacial dam gave out and washed out part of the line.

Ich träume... von dieser Winterwanderung, am Ziel ein Picnic, Sonne und Schnee geniessen... wie oft sind wir hier gegangen.

Coming into the little borough of Healy, which is about 20 miles north of Denali, is a "blink and you miss it" locale. Coming into the peaceful area, the Denali Star makes quick work passing through as Fall color begins to show itself.

this was a nice find out in the woods...

p.s ignore the dates, they're totally messed up. of course, you probably didnt notice that until i said it...

A brace of four GP40-2s bought new by the railroad, and all now dressed in the matching modern Alaska Railroad image sit tied down on Love Siding in the Healy Yard at about MP 359.5 in this simple view looking north on the ARRC mainline. 3004, 3002, 3005, and 3010 are on the head of a long company work train consisting mostly of side dump gondolas with a couple ballast cars and punctuated by a classic caboose.

The southbound Denali Star exits one of the most maintenance prone sections on the Alaska Railroad. The are just about to the location of the former Moody Tunnel daylighted in 2008 I believe.

The Chicago Cultural Center, opened in 1897, is a Chicago Landmark building operated by Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events that houses the city's official reception venue where the Mayor of Chicago has welcomed Presidents and royalty, diplomats and community leaders. It is located in the Loop, across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park. Originally the central library building, it was converted in 1977 to an arts and culture center at the instigation of Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Lois Weisberg.

Snow clouds obscure the summit of Mount Healy during sunset at 11pm tonight.

The Alaska Railroad's southward Fairbanks to Anchorage freight is exiting Healy Canyon under a spectacular midnight sunset as seen from the Parks Highway bridge over the Nenana River. HEP equipped SD70MAC No. 4327 is on the point of the train and assisted by two standard freight variants.

As is usually the case I make the 4 hour drive north right around the time of summer solstice. This year was no different and on Wednesday 6/16 I hit the road. I had some goals, not all of which were accomplished but I can check this one of the list. The northbound Denali Star crosses not so Dry Creek near MP 360 on a beautiful afternoon.

The Healy Pass Meadows seem to extend forever. The Monarch (2904 m) overlooks above the ramparts. Healy Pass at 2330 m is a 9.2 km hike from Sunshine parking lot. It is a favorite destination in July when the wild flowers are in bloom. The top of the pass is the BC/Alberta border

L'Irlande, et la Wide Atlantic Way, possède des paysages merveilleux ... et Healy Pass à proximité du Glanmore Lake dans le comté du Kerry en fait, sans nul doute, partie.

Just a simple shot over a decade ago out with some friends shooting what was then commonplace but now is no more. Three SD70MACs have 75 aluminum hoppers in tow as Alaska Railroad train 184N destined for the Usibelli Coal Mine near Healy for another load of black diamonds to take to the export terminal in Seward. This view looks down off the shoulder of the Parks Highway just before the overpass at MP 164.3 and the south end of the QAP gravel loadout track at Pittman.

At the time this was taken the ARRC had just come off a record breaking year in 2011 that saw us move just under 1.1 million metric tons to 18 ships. This was the best year in the history of the Alaskan export coal market, and in fact we were working on plans to get to over 2 million! 70 more used aluminum hoppers had been purchased to make two full consists each of which made two round trip 720 mile cycles each week.

But from those halcyon days the business evaporated just as quickly as hit had boomed, and four years later only four colliers called on the terminal at the head of Resurrection Bay. With only one ship for all of 2016 the final train ran in July of that year, less than four years after the date of this photo, and the ARRC called it quits and laid off the 16 employees in Seward, mothballed the facility, and sold off the hoppers.....none have run since.

In the distance rising to nearly 6000 ft are the impressive Twin Peaks of the Chugach Mountains on the far side of the wide Matanuska Valley.

Almost two hundred miles further north at MP 352, just a bit north of Cascade, the north freight rumbles along the Nenana River at 0350 AM still 3 hours from Fairbanks.
