A block north of Heritage Square on the east side of downtown is the old Coconino County Courthouse. Built when Coconino first became a county, this building has served as the political hub since 1895. Despite its importance in administering the second-largest county of the United States, it was "shoved aside" to a random city block during planning, as the grid for downtown had not considered institutional buildings, but was still "by far the most elaborate structure in Flagstaff". It is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture, but the "small-town version", featuring "heavy masonry construction, cavernous window and door openings, an impressive square tower, [and] round-arched windows that reflect the Roman architecture of Europe", with the arched entryway "probably its most distinguishing architectural feature". In 1956, a modern International Style addition to the building was added, which was contentious from the start not only in style but also for clashing in style with the rest of the city; it was replaced. The Rotspitze is waiting, with his heavy load of ancient ice and fresh snow. He stares at us through the crowning clouds like a grim deity from ages past, shrouded in mystery - perhaps wondering what on earth we are doing here...
Here I am, my friends, with a new picture - however a re-edit of an old one. I have always known that I would have re-edited this shot, and the time is come. No time to go around shooting, not even at the precious, secret time of sunrise. We are quite busy in the process of getting a new house in a new town... A great chance for our family. So I have allowed myself returning to this shot - one of my very earliest HDR processing - with new techniques: luminosity masks and Nik Color Efex 4. I love the colour version I have obtained, but from start I was thinking about a monochrome to try conveying a feeling of primeval power and the majesty of the mountain as they could have been perceived by some ancient dweller of the region, thinking that the mountain is a mighty deity.

With an alcove (lower left) dedicated for several monolithic graves and in the style of monolithic necropolis - many example of which exist without associated churches; with rounded 'organic' style openings, with small 'oculus' portholes, carved envelope lines around openings, two floors (also present in a sub set of other examples), and an unconventional floorplan, there must be an option kept open for the chance that the bulk of this building existed in ages prior to those associated with Christianity. The interior does have an arch that looks to either Visigoth or Moorish, but that could have been carved into a rounder past surface and cannot assure chronology.
The 'church' is currently in a position set back from the great river Ebro 'highway', just prior to a gorges with an extraordinary series of turns and demonstrations of naturally sculpted rock, and not far from a necropolis of monolithic graves with hard data aligning its location with prehistory. A second site that expresses over two floor is around 3 straight km north west: Hermitage of San Miguel (Presillas).
I took the shots with a 17mm Takumar prime. The lens distortion has not been adjusted, keeping the retro fisheye style and avoiding soft edges. CA was removed and a mild HDRpro passed through to assure the dynamic range between highlight and shadow. Shot with a Pentax K3.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens consist of approximately 55 acres (22 ha) of landscaped and wooded areas at Duke University located in Durham, North Carolina. There are 5 miles (8 km) of allées, walks, and pathways throughout the gardens. The gardens are divided into four areas, the Historic Core and Terraces, the H.L Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, the William Louis Culberson Asiatic Arboretum and the Doris Duke Center Gardens (including the Page-Rollins White Garden). The gardens are a memorial to Sarah Pearson Angier Duke, mother of Mary Duke Biddle and wife of Benjamin N. Duke, one of Duke University's benefactors. (Wikipedia)
The sun is gradually moving back round to setting over the shore rather than the town so it was time to re-acquaint myself with our pier.

Classic Firetruck on display at the Hearst Castle Visitor Center.
Hearst Castle is a palatial estate on the central California coast and a National Historic Landmark. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst—a newspaper magnate from 1919 until 1947. In 1957, the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California. Since that time it has been maintained as state historic park where the estate and its considerable collection of art and antiques are open for public tours. Despite its location far from any urban center, the site attracts roughly one million visitors per year.
Hearst Castle is located near the unincorporated community of San Simeon, California approximately 250 miles (400 km) from both Los Angeles and San Francisco, and 43 miles (69 km) from San Luis Obispo at the northern end of San Luis Obispo County. The estate itself is five miles (eight kilometers) inland atop a hill of the Santa Lucia Range at an altitude of 1,600 feet (490 m). The region is sparsely populated because the Santa Lucia Range abuts the Pacific Ocean, which provide dramatic seaside vistas but few opportunities for development and hampered transportation. The surrounding countryside visible from the mansion remains largely undeveloped. Its entrance is adjacent to San Simeon State Park. (Wikipedia)

Large on black canvas | My favorite shots
Location: Along a fishing-lake at Haren-Ems (Emsland) Germany.
Description: Taken this morning while I was driving somewhere near the city Haren, when I noticed a large (sport-fishing) lake on the right side of the road. Initially I wanted to take some shots of this lake together with these thick cloud formation. But when I looked at the right side along this lake, I noticed these streamlined sky that seemed like a vein of heaven. So, I mounted the camera on my Manfrotto, made some shots, with different f-stops, from a low-angled position. When I got home, I was really surprised about how the sky eventually turned out: it was exactly what I had in mind, but it wasn't quite noticeable on spot with the relatively little LCD-display and bright low-angled morning sunlight.
Exposure: 3 brackets of -2 Ev, +/-0 Ev and +2 Ev at f/8, securely mounted on a Manfrotto 190.
Technique: HDR Tone Mapping & PS color and contrast enhancements.

Low tide zone organisms include abalone, anemones, brown seaweed, chitons, crabs, green algae, hydroids, isopods, limpets, and mussels. These creatures can grow to larger sizes because there is more available energy and better water coverage: the water is shallow enough to allow more sunlight for photosynthetic activity, and the salinity is at almost normal levels. This area is also relatively protected from large predators because of the wave action and shallow water.

Glued laminated timber, also called "gluelam" or "glulam", is a type of structural timber product composed of several layers of dimensioned lumber glued together. By laminating several smaller pieces of wood, a single large, strong, structural member can be manufactured from smaller lumber. These structural members are used as vertical columns or horizontal beams, often in curved, arching shapes.
Glued laminated timber, like other engineered wood products, represent an efficient use of available timber. With an increased demand for lumber worldwide, the amount of solid timber available has steadily declined. Gluelam structural members thus make use of smaller and less desirable dimensions of timber, yet are engineered to be stronger than similarly sized members comprised of solid wood.
The first use of glued laminated timber was in Germany in 1890 by Otto Hetzer. The technology arrived in North America in 1934 when Max Hanisch, Sr., who had worked with Hetzer at the turn of the century, formed a firm in Peshtigo, Wisconsin to manufacture structural glued laminated timber.
