This is a photo of New Frankfurt Old Town during blue hour. Note that these buildings are all reconstructions, with the originals being destroyed during WW2.

New Frankfurt Old Town itself was reconstructed from 2012 to 2018 as part of a major urban development project called the Dom-Römer Project. (Frankfurt Cathedral, in the middle background, was actually reconstructed in the 1950s.)

As there were plenty of people walking in front of my camera while I was photographing, this image was created by stacking several long exposure images on top of one another. A few ghostly outlines of individuals remain, but I felt these added to the overall atmosphere of the image so I’ve decided to leave them there. In my opinion, blue hour is definitely the best time to capture the rustic ambience of New Frankfurt Old Town.

NOTE: On my recent trip, I took plenty of city / urban /architectural photos, meaning that interspaced between images of birds and nature, I’ll also be sharing a few of these images, too. Hope you enjoy them.

Thank you for your interest, views, faves, comments and awards ! This image was captured in Frankfurt am Main 法蘭克福. (Better viewed on a larger screen.)

Bote Mountain Tunnel is located along Laurel Creek Road, one of the most traveled roads in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, between the Townsend Wye and Cades Cove. It is a 121-foot-long tunnel, constructed in 1948 that is concrete lined and cuts through Bote Mountain.

The Bote Mountain Tunnel is one of four in the national park. Two other tunnels are on Newfound Gap Road and the fourth is on the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Spur.

I don't know of more than a handful of photograph opportunities that are more beautiful than an old red barn and plenty of snow...it is always something I look for when winter shows up in Middle Tennessee. This is the first time I've photographed this particular scene and I am please to find it with the roadway above the barn, etc. so it gives a better perspective of the snow and the scene overall. Clear blue skies with all the snow just make it that much better...

Koko Crater (Hawaiian: Kohelepelepe or Puʻu Mai) is an extinct tuff cone located on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu near Hawaiʻi Kai. It is a part of the Honolulu Volcanics, which were craters that formed as vents of the Koʻolau Volcano during its rejuvenation stage. During World War II, the U.S. military built bunkers on top of Koko Crater with a railroad leading to its summit. In 1966, the air force ceded administration of Koko Crater over to the City of Honolulu. It was then renamed to the Koko Head Regional Park. Within this park is the Koko Crater Trail, which is a 1.8-mile-long trail that uses the now-abandoned railroad as its pathway. The trail heads up 990 ft and 1,048 railroad cross-ties at a very steep incline, and the views at the Koko Head Crater summit are 1,208 ft above sea level.

The abandoned railway trail can be seen as the faint 'line' up the side of the crater in the photograph above (starts just above the baseball/softball field and ends at the peak of the crater). This photo was taken from the Hawai'i Kai Lookout along the side of Kalanianaʻole Highway.

Back in 2013 through 2015, a new bridge was built adjacent to this 5 span Parker through-truss bridge across Center Hill Lake (created by the impoundment of the Caney Fork River). The original bridge was a Camelback but was replaced by this version in 1948 when the river was impounded and required the bridge to be raised. Unfortunately, the replacement is a boring concrete box bridge that leaves much to be desired after all the years of having this beautiful piece of engineering. Luckily, I have numerous photographs of this great old bridge before it was replaced and during construction of the new bridge.

Depending which side of the bridge you are on, you are either in Dekalb County (Smithville, TN) or White County (Sparta, TN).

I have no idea of the history of this barn, who it belonged to, or exactly what it was used for...but, what I do know is that I love it! It is just a beautiful old barn that is also red and backed with some great Autumn color and, maybe most importantly, it bears my middle name!

Unfortunately, this great old barn no longer exists due to the construction of a new subdivision by a local developer...sometimes I wish "progress" would just slow down a bit and leave a little of rural America untouched.

Anyone ever wonder why so many old barns are red?? Well...here it is...Hundreds of years ago, farmers 'painted' their barns with linseed oil to help seal the wood and keep it from rotting. Rust, from wherever they could find it, was mixed with the oil to keep moss and fungi from growing on the wood as well. This turned the oil 'red' and thus began the tradition of barns being red. Over the years as real paint became more common, the tradition was continued with red as the primary color for barns.

The historic Cookeville Railroad Depot (constructed circa 1909) seen at sunset. The Depot was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under criteria A & C for its architectural and historical significance in Cookeville & Putnam County, Tennessee. Architecturally, the depot is significant as a fine example of a vernacular type of railroad depot design in the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. Historically, the depot played a significant role in the development of rail transportation in Putnam County and in the development of Cookeville, especially the west section of the city. It was not only the impetus for the development of West Cookeville but was, for many years, the major form of transportation in the region. While the depot has undergone few alterations over the years, it continues to retain its historical & architectural integrity.

The Cookeville Railroad Depot was added to the NRHP on November 7, 1985. All the information above was found in the original documents submitted for listing consideration found here:
