This monument located on Mount Buzludzha is the biggest ideological building in Bulgaria. It was built as a tribute to the creation of the Bulgarian socialist movement in 1891.

The construction of Buzludzha was made possible thanks to government funds and supporters’ donations for an amount of around 14 186 000 leva (around 7 000 000 €). The site was built by civil engineering troops from the Bulgarian army and volunteers. The master builder was General Delcho Delchev who was in charge of the Stara Zagora civil engineering section. The author of this project was the architect Guéorguy Stoilov. Several famous painters and sculptors have participated to the decoration.

Ever since the superseding of Bulgarian president Todor Givkovand and the political changes that occurred in Bulgaria from 1989, the state of the monument has continued to decay. portraits of Ludmila and Todor Givkov have been destroyed. The copper adornments have been stolen. The building is slowly disintegrating; the monument is abandoned and no public institution seems to be concerned by the conservation of renovation of the building. The Bulgarian socialist party itself is not taking any action towards the maintenance of its most important symbol. The big star has been perforated by gunshots because it was thought to be made out of ruby!

another out take from our trip to London

The day the Queen Mary visited Melbourne.

I always say on my last visit to this iconic place that I'll never return but went back for a friend who had never been. I always get something slightly different every time I visit.

Shot at 15mm with the F2.8 fisheye (full frame version).

A short tour with Mike, Andrew and John. Taking in some revisits and some new spots.

The unfinished cooling tower of Reactor 5 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The platforms at the top were made out of metal frames with wood planks. Much of this was either hanging down or on the ground. The size and accoustics of this place were amazing.

Previous set of Pripyat here www.flickr.com/photos/timster1973/sets/72157643944616235/

Named for the nearby Pripyat River, Pripyat was founded on 4 February 1970, the ninth nuclear city in the Soviet Union, for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was officially proclaimed a city in 1979, and had grown to a population of 49,360 before being evacuated a few days after the 26 April 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

Though Pripyat is located within the administrative district of Ivankiv Raion, the abandoned city now has a special status within the larger Kiev Oblast (province), being administered directly from Kiev. Pripyat is also supervised by Ukraine's Ministry of Emergencies, which manages activities for the entire Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Access to Pripyat, unlike cities of military importance, was not restricted before the disaster as nuclear power stations were seen by the Soviet Union as safer than other types of power plants. Nuclear power stations were presented as being an achievement of Soviet engineering, where nuclear power was harnessed for peaceful projects. The slogan "peaceful atom" (Russian: mirnyj atom) was popular during those times. The original plan had been to build the plant only 25 km (16 mi) from Kiev, but the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, among other bodies, expressed concern about it being too close to the city. As a result, the power station and Pripyat were built at their current locations, about 100 km (62 mi) from Kiev. After the disaster the city of Pripyat was evacuated in two days.

Reworked from one of the best UK explores I have been on. Still around just not as nice as things in the UE world change over time.

This was the first time I visited over six weeks and the only access point to get in here was through, you guessed it, the hole in the door.

Central Office was built in 1892 and was expanded in 1926 through the development of the company. This huge building was abandoned in 1986 following a merger between two leading companies in the steel industry in France.

An abandoned chateau somewhere in Luxembourg - unspoilt, untrashed, unloved and unlived in hence no vandals or thieves have upset the balance of this fine place. Please do not ask for coords as we weren't given them and the day before we ended up in the wrong place looking for this. Was worth it though.
